Mask mandate (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by shadowjumper69
Does anyone still plan on wearing their masks when they lift the mandate for partners? If so why? What are you going to tell your fellow partners or the customers when they ask? Vaccinated and unvaccinated answers welcome. I still plan to.

Edit: I know the mandate will initially be extended to vaccinated people but eventually it will lift completely. Also do you all think starbucks will tell us NOT to wear masks?
Malevolent_barnacle 124 points 2y ago
I'm gonna keep wearing mine, yes I'm vaccinated. I have greatly enjoyed only having to control my voice and not my facial expressions in my cafe only store
shadowjumper69 [OP] 29 points 2y ago
I agree with that. I have become used to making face under my mask.
BeardiesRule112 66 points 2y ago
I’m going to tell them to mind their fucking business.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 12 points 2y ago
That is an answer🤣
BeardiesRule112 21 points 2y ago
Sorry just had to get that out. To answer your question, I know quite a few of my vaccinated coworkers will still wear their masks and that’s cool, for those who don’t want to wear them, that’s cool as well. I can’t help but feel this policy is corporate pitting us against each other on some level, some of my coworkers are not as open-minded as I am.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I don't know what you are apologize for I agree with what you said. It was just bold. I can tell some of your coworkers have caused some avoidable situations.
LatteMaster 2 points 2y ago
I mean what policy would they make that doesn’t pit partners against one another though? Generally curious to your thoughts on this.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I don't think they do. I should say if there are any most of the people I work with agree on the same point, or do care enough to fight on the policy. What do you think?
BeardiesRule112 -7 points 2y ago
Get rid of masks period, without proof of vaccination, like many, many other places.
Media_is_run_by_Libs 3 points 2y ago
No you won’t
BeardiesRule112 1 points 2y ago
Yup. I will. The pennies they pay me aren’t enough to deal with those questions constantly
laura_hjp 51 points 2y ago
I’m vaccinated and I will keep wearing mine as well. It’s not just to protect myself even more, it’s to protect others as well and stop the spread before Covid variants spread and get worse. Hopefully there’s a day when we don’t have to worry about these things.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 14 points 2y ago
Basically doing your part I'm done for that
TylerJ716 50 points 2y ago
I plan to keep mine on for as long as I feel comfy. I've slowly started to go to places without a mask due to being vaccinated and it being a hot summer. But I also have facial piercings (septum and nostril) and dress code technically only allows one piercing and my other summer job doesn't allow any.

When winter rolls around, I definitely might wear it again due to cold and flu season. Keep any runny noses safe from dripping.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 20 points 2y ago
Makes sense. Never stop wearing come cold and flu season you have an excuse of never having taken it off. I like that idea. Especially if you are a café only store.
TylerJ716 9 points 2y ago
I just switched to Cafe only, but when I was on window at my old drive store, I felt a lot more comfy with my runny nose knowing that I had to keep taking order but also that I wasn't getting anyone else sick. Granted my nose was runny cause I was on window for three hours in the middle of winter but that's besides the point lol. I like masks cause the contain my nose and kept me a little bit warmer
Voxxyvoo 33 points 2y ago
Yes. I can’t believe I let those quite frankly disgusting people breathe on me
shadowjumper69 [OP] 20 points 2y ago
And the open mouth cough.
sunemoji 8 points 2y ago
Customers kids open mouth coughing in your face and their parents don’t say anything 🤢
shadowjumper69 [OP] 9 points 2y ago
Parents do it too.
catsandmermaids29 23 points 2y ago
I’m fully vaccinated and I plan on wearing mine as long as possible. I’m just gonna say I don’t feel comfortable yet
shadowjumper69 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
A simple response. Better than what starbucks tells us to say
impasse602 13 points 2y ago
Im gonna keep miné because i like the anonymity and i dont have to hear anyone tell me to smile. Plus i can talk shit and nobody will know im moving my lips
shadowjumper69 [OP] 5 points 2y ago
You know I never thought about that because it's been so long, but they actually make us do that. Clever.
LatteMaster 12 points 2y ago
No, but you do you. Dress code is being adjusted so that you can wear it however long you want. There will be no way to prevent customers asking “why are you wearing a mask” so formulating a response in advance is a good idea.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Any suggestions?
LatteMaster 4 points 2y ago
Tbh not really considering I am planning on submitting my mask removal paperwork tomorrow. I guess say whatever is easiest or make up a story. You will get a lot of people at first that don’t care, but over time they will probably ask. Many may assume you are unvaccinated and you cant get angry with them because it isn’t like its not a logical assumption.
variazioni 3 points 2y ago
the weekly update said to just say it’s your personal preference/choice i think
shadowjumper69 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Cool. Thank you
HadADreamA1000times 9 points 2y ago
i'm vaccinated and I still wear it because we are still in a pandemic. a lot of people act like its over but there's a new variant. i don't think they can make you not wear one. also, i am hearing "smile" a lot less lmao. do whatever makes you comfortable ☺️
morwen538 8 points 2y ago
I work with the general public and am immunocompromised, my mother is medically exempt from being able to get vaccinated, and I regularly see my grandmother. Im not putting my family and myself at risk to make a stranger happy.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Put yourself first and don't worry about what others think. Nice
BeardiesRule112 8 points 2y ago
I literally just looked at the weekly update and when a customer asks if we are vaccinated we are supposed to say “thanks for asking... blah blah”. That’s the last thing I’d say In the situation.
Kittywizarrr 7 points 2y ago
I’m fully vaccinated, and I do plan to let my mask down, but only because I live in Vermont, which is at 80% vaccinated. So it’s mostly because I feel safe in my state, rather than thinking the whole country is safe now. If there were any concerns about COVID spreading about here, I’ll be the first to put it back on.
Reiglo 5 points 2y ago
I am vaccinated and will probably choose to not wear a mask. I think most customers won't really mind whether some of us choose to wear or not wear it. I'm sure they'll make some random side comments about it during the first couple weeks but at the end of the day it's not really any person's right to know why someone chooses a mask and by even further extension, chooses to get vaccinated or not. I'll be sure to let them know the policy change if prompted but that's it. Greet me, have an actual conversation with me and get your coffee Janet. Maybe worry about climate change and not why my barista has a mask on lol.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 0 points 2y ago
I'm wait for customers to ask why I'm still wearing mine. worry about something else not me. I don't care If you can't see my smile or face not that is half the point.
renjaminbutton 5 points 2y ago
I think I plan to take mine off, my fiancé also works for Starbucks and they want to keep theirs on because they have multiple facial piercings. The mask covers them up so there’s no dress code issue there. We are both vaccinated.
sidneyistrash 3 points 2y ago
since i have been fully vaccinated for months it really depends. sometimes when i'm on cold bar or on warming wearing a mask gets too much for me i get hot and my face starts to get super sweaty and i feel super gross. when that happens that's when i'll take off my mask. but i'll wearing my mask beginning of my shift and see what happens throughout! (if im on window that's when i'll 100% be wearing my mask)

I oddly got comfortable wearing a mask and still wear one out in public even though u don't have to, so I'll most likely just continue to wear one out of comfort. Customers don't need to see my face when I give them attitude 😂
omaha-mike-golf 3 points 2y ago
Might get hate, but I haven’t gotten the vaccine, and I’m still going back and forth about it. TBH I’m not very trusting of the government but I’m also not very trusting of wack job conspiracy theorists. I’m leaning towards getting it, but I still wanna wait a bit longer because it feels like it was a bit rushed.

Therefore, I will gladly be wearing a mask (and gloves still).
SeleneEmpressAlicia 5 points 2y ago
I don’t want this to come off in a preachy or infantilizing way, but I feel that I should alert you to the fact that the tech used for both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines has been around since 2002. The only reason we’re just now implementing it is because it wasn’t profitable for these companies to pursue until now. I completely understand reservations about the J&J one though.
StormTheParade 2 points 2y ago
Yep! Not to mention one of the other conspiracy theories/concerns regarding the speed in which these were developed. There seems to be very little education about the fact that this is called COVID-19 because it's a very specific strain of a type of virus that has been around for ages.

The vaccine, to the best of my knowledge, was produced so quickly because we already had a head start in studies from SARS and other Coronaviruses.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
You still wear gloves? I understand, rare but I still understand.
elote69-420 3 points 2y ago
I’m vaccinated and don’t wear mine. I’ve been wearing a mask the past year and a half and doing my roll to keep others safe in this pandemic. Yet, people who haven’t been wearing a mask have been able to live their lives normally even though they’re the people being the most selfish and ignorant. I’m vaccinated and ready to slowly assimilate back to this “normal” lifestyle after over a year of doing my part.
enlighTAYment 2 points 2y ago
I don’t think they will say you absolutely cannot wear a mask, because it could make employees not feel safe. So excited for Monday, tho.
0ejp1 2 points 2y ago
these replies 🥰🥰 yay for being vaxxed and still wearing a mask
HeartsandPins 2 points 2y ago
I'm fully vaccinated and I love wearing my ask but even with daily washing of my masks and acne prevention I'm still breaking out on my face and it hurts. I gotta let my skin breathe. Masks are great but my skin hates it. 😭 So there will be days where I'll wear it and sometimes not.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Do you use the disposable ones? What kind do you use?
HeartsandPins 1 points 2y ago
Double layered Cotton ones I find on esty. I wash them daily and still use my acne prevention medication but the heat of working, plus being a heavy breather, and working at a store that makes on average 8-10k a day. It definitely takes a tole on my skin,The sides of my cheeks get it the worse.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Maybe try a different one 🤔
shadowjumper69 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Masks
nevernot613 2 points 2y ago
i’m fully vaccinated and i’ve decided to pick and choose, sometimes it just gets so hot in our store that i’m dripping sweat under the masks and times like that i wish i could remove it
Ashamed_Equal 1 points 2y ago
That’s what I’m doing
mewvb 2 points 2y ago
I'm not vaxed yet because of fertility treatments. I've read a few articles about how it does affect things, and others that say it doesn't. Adding more roadblocks of unknown just scares me with how much money I'm spending already. I will get vaxed as soon as they can answer that one question. My wife got it already so she's good at least.
lillyyoulosers 3 points 2y ago
I also am not vaccinated out of fertility paranoia. Another thread just completely bashed me “you can’t have babies if you’re dead” but I plan on wearing my mask as long needed to keep my store comfortable even after mandates are lifted.
mewvb 1 points 2y ago
I had another thread do the same as well. I understand people feel strongly, but clearly we've lost human decency to empathize a little.
denahom-chikn 1 points 2y ago
as much as i want to take mine off, i’ll be continuing to wear it because i have three nose rings and don’t want to deal with taking them out and putting them back in daily
Sparklingghost 1 points 2y ago
I’m fully vaccinated but I’m going to keep wearing mine to protect those around me. I tried going out without a mask and I felt really paranoid so there’s that lol. I also make a lot of faces under my mask when customers are rude so don’t want them seeing that 😂😂
Elliotisnotokay 1 points 2y ago
I love masks and will definitely keep wearing mine. Kinda sad other people won't have to wear theres bc I'm still terrified of covid
Tryocon 1 points 2y ago
I'm going to continue to wear facemasks for the duration of my time working in food. So many mouth particles are caught all day with help from the masks and I feel more confident talking to customers and just all around more comfortable.
If anyone asks it wasnt a problem before and if someone is deaf and needs to read lips I'd hope we could sign or write down their drinks easier, starvukcs is trying to make it a part of the dress code so if we want to wear then I don't think they mind.
oywiththepoodles309 1 points 2y ago
I’m fully vaccinated, but I plan to wear mine as long as possible because I volunteer in an ER and am going to EMT school, so I don’t want to potentially expose my coworkers
BatWeary 1 points 2y ago
I’ll keep wearing it (most of the time). I’m vaccinated, so it’ll really be up to me once my SM approves it, but people are gross, the delta strain is going around, and I have major allergies (included but not limited to an itchy/runny nose). Besides I’ve gotten farrrr too comfortable with making ridiculous faces under the mask and I’m afraid I’ll do it unconsciously without it. But, it will be nice to be able to pull my mask down for some fresh air ESPECIALLY when I’m on bar and sweating like crazy. My mask has gotten soaked with sweat before (or just soaked from me constantly getting splashed with things) and made me feel like I was getting water boarded 😩

In the winter, yes. I usually end up with a small cold every winter and this winter I didn’t get one. It was pretty nice being able to breathe, lol. It kept my face warm in my unfortunate forever home that is drive thru window.
Gameb0i6 1 points 2y ago
I’m gonna wear a mask for as long as as I can. 1. Cuz I have plenty of unused masks that I bought. And 2. Cuz I have facial piercing and wearing a mask means I don’t have to take them out.

mrsfrankenstud 1 points 2y ago
I'm vaccinated and I'm keeping mine on because I have children who aren't old enough to be vaccinated and I haven't had so much as a common cold in over a year and that's been great!
mrsfrankenstud 1 points 2y ago
Did I mention I live in the new covid capital of the nation, Missouri? I don't trust the public here any more than I could throw them.
Alouria6598 1 points 2y ago
I'm fully vaccinated and I'll be wearing my mask for the foreseeable future. I'm a nursing student and hospitals I've done clinicals at are preparing to open covid wards back up again in my state because of the delta varient. I wear it in all indoor public spaces unless eating or drinking and at my other job too.
shadowjumper69 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Do you expect it to be crazy stupid all over again?
Alouria6598 1 points 2y ago
I'm not sure at this point, but since I work with compromised populations and I really don't want to get me or them sick I'm not taking any chances.
sbuxbarista2 1 points 2y ago
Honestly I want to take it off as soon as possible. I'm not vaccinated and don't plan on getting the vaccine. Ever since I've had to wear the mask I've had severe problems with breathing at times to where I have to go in the back room just to be able to get a full breath. The only place I wear a mask is at work and the second I clock off I throw it away.
CoffeeBeanBarbarin 1 points 2y ago
Im vaccinated and honestly I feel like its just going to depend on what my team is comfortable with. I still wear it when going to other stores when im not working out of respect for the partners. But once its lifted I will probably just wear it on and off
lilkiosk 1 points 2y ago
I’m vaccinated and just started a LOA on the first. When I get back, I anticipate that most people will probably not be wearing masks. I may do it for a little longer because I have kiddos that are too young to be vaccinated at home but also I don’t know if I can stop the whole swearing under my breath and making faces at customers that they can’t see just yet - I think I need some more practice being a polite and happy barista again before I reveal my face.
ittybittybakerkitty 1 points 2y ago
I'm vaxed but will still wear for a while at least until the delta variant dies down. I also noticed that I have trouble controlling my facial expressions and have a bad habit of whispering things if a customer is being stupid. So I'm staying masked for the time being but will provide Starbucks with my vax records.
jeb0913 1 points 2y ago
I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet. Personally, I’ve started going some places maskless and feel quite comfortable as I am fully vaccinated. But there are people I work with who are immunocompromised, or live with someone who is, or they have young children who cannot be vaccinated yet, and I care for these coworkers deeply. I don’t want to put them at risk if I don’t have mine on and spread something to them. So, I guess if I decide to continue wearing mine, it will be more for them and less about what I want to do.
barista19471057 1 points 2y ago
I'm going to continue wearing mine, I'm high risk and currently unvaccinated due to health problems
domotastic 1 points 2y ago
I’m gonna keep wearing mine for sure. I’m vaccinated, but I’m immunocompromised and worried about the delta variant of covid. Also it’s nice being able to hide my face; every once and a while I gotta cry on the floor. It’s nice not having to smile until my teeth fall out. I’m polite and have great customer service but I don’t get paid to be a damn actress. Masks have really given me a nice break from that.
Able_Ad2652 -1 points 2y ago
Im not vaccinated, and don’t plan on getting vaccinated. So I will continue to wear my mask until they lift it for those who aren’t vaccinated.
