morning shift - yay or nay?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by priceypercy
call me weird but i love going in at 4:30am, working drive thru, leaving at 10:15am and having the rest of the day for myself. anyone else relate?? there’s just something about working in the afternoon that feels weird to me (and working drive thru makes the time go by hella fast)

I always joke to customers that I like opening because by time I completely wake up, my shift is half over! I have all day to dread afternoon shifts and feel like I can't enjoy my day until I'm off.

I used to close all the time and I would waste my days that I work by worrying about what time it was and how many hours I had left, never failed how early I would start my day it was the same each time. I have to go to bed a lot earlier now but with me starting stuff at the hospital for school it works out cause I'm used to being up early now!

as the only barista who can open at my store: i felt this. also for me the later i work the less time i have to think about/mentally prepare for the fact that i’m going to work
half asleep brain just puts on clothes in the morning and then when i’m fully awake it doesn’t matter because i’m already at work

My store is the polar opposite. Everyone wants mornings and me with my open availability ends up closing almost every night

our problem is that we’re severely understaffed and i’m the only barista with completely open availability AND all of our new hires have been minors so they can’t come in earlier than 7am ((((:

Mornings are seriously the best. My favorite part is honestly the 2-3 hour calm before peak officially starts, I feel like I can really talk to my coworkers and craft really great drinks!

My favorite princess shift is 4:30 to 8:30-9. Unfortunately I'm either 4:30 to 1 or 12 to 8:30p now... Eight hour is too fucking long to be at Starbucks, no matter the time of day.

Exactly!!!!! I love doing mornings. The wake ups suck but once i get there i have about 3 hours of fun and low drink amounts until peak !!!

Nope my manager gives out 5:30-2pm shifts that I’m too tired to do anything after

Same when I was there. Me and my best friend at window. I’d run around everywhere supporting her. Haha. She’d do the same. But she loved window. Good times when cafe was shut and we played whatever music we wanted to. That was actually the most fun I’ve ever had at a job. 4 am every day listening to whatever the fuck and just…idk. It was weird cus of COVID. But it was so fun.

i'm very much not a morning person but yes, opens are my favorite shift. beautiful, tranquil walks to work and taking my time with each customer. getting the opportunity to bond with my coworkers over deep conversations and minigames. chilling out in the back and making cold brew. i know that not every starbucks can afford this opportunity (i worked DT and currently work at a hospital cafe that gets busy towards midday and evening) so i like to savor every morning moment :)

I can kinda understand that, even as a closer. I choose to wake up about an hour, hour and a half before my 2pm shifts, or any shift really. I basically treat every shift like a morning shift, after I'm off I have the rest of the day/night to myself and what I want to do. It works.

I used to not mind opening. Being in and out was nice. By the time my brain fully woke up it was over, but then my ssv had me on bar everyday no matter what. I would leave super exhausted after morning rush and it just wasn’t fair being the opener and being main bar everyday as other baristas got to chill and not work as hard. Stopped having opening on my availability and got my hours reduced. Still main bar everyday but at least I’m not as exhausted from opening

my store needs closers. everyone wants to work mornings here

I love opening! I go straight to the library after work to do some schoolwork and go home to have dinner with my husband. Go to sleep after dinner and do it all over again the next day.
I have ADHD so I get stuck on waiting mode if I have later shifts and wouldn't be able to get any school work done.

I love opening. I have a system too. Orders put away, pull done, orders placed, lunches run, on floor for the rushes, savories pulled, cold brew emptied, kegs made and trash run all before 11am. If I'm scheduled past that everyone knows I turn into a pumpkin. I'll stay if I have to but opening is awesome!

I strictly closed for my first eight years with Bux, and just this last year I stepped down to barista and changed my availability to mornings for the first time... it took some getting used to, but I gotta say, it's quite refreshing. I'm still not used to clocking out while the sun's still up, lol.

depends on where i’m placed. if i’m put on cs then i would lose my mind. but morning dt shifts are the best
plktm1 points2y ago
Yup i’m a morning bitch. closed once and said never again. I thrive in mornings
