Question about write ups/warnings(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by copicking
Context: Im a green bean who's been working for about a month now. Today I clocked in today about 15 minutes before my shift was scheduled to start, and clocked out two minutes before my shift was scheduled to end. I didnt think twice about it because the amount of time punched was the same amount, if not slightly over what I was scheduled for. This has never been an issue at any of my prior jobs, and no one here has ever approached me telling me this wasn't okay.
As I'm walking out, one of the shifts asks what I'm doing and says that it isnt time for me to leave yet. Before I can really say anything, she sharply asks to speak with me in the back. I follow her to the back. She starts laying into me, speaking very quickly & sternly about how I cannot dismiss myself, I should always check with a shift before clocking out
I apologize and state that I didnt realize it wasn't allowed & that I won't do it again. I tried to explain that no one has explained this to me, but I'm not really able to get a word in before she tells me to go home.
Am I going to get written up for this? This shift has always been kind to me before. I've never had any issues with her, or any of the other shifts, so I was surprised she spoke so sternly about it. I need this job and I can't afford to get fired.

Yeah.. you shouldn’t just leave whenever you want, especially when someone leaves the play has to be moved around, or when you clock out people are coming in. Yes never clock in early unless asked to and always clock in on your designated time. Sometimes if you were to clock in 15 mins earlier, it messed with if u get a meal or not. Not sure how they let you pass clocking in that much earlier. But leaving whenever you want even if it’s 5 minutes, is a big no no. I’m sure they wrote it in the book and ur sm will coach you

So would that count as a write up? Confused as to what you mean by book.

Probably won’t be a write up! There’s a section in the daily records book (or the book) for coaching/training etc to let the SM and DM know who’s being coached or trained on what, so that’s probably where the shift wrote it. Your sm will probably talk to you about it

ALWAYS check before you leave. Often we’ll have people do one last quick task before leaving- ice, cups, lids.
Additionally, someone (usually) has to take your place so when you just leave there may not be someone there yet.
From what you said to them, I doubt you’d be written up unless it happens again.

I’m sure you won’t get written up and now that you know, I’m sure it won’t happen again. Yes, always throw the courtesy, “am I okay to leave?” or “is there anything else you need before I leave?” to the shift before clocking out.

only clock in early if you’re about to start working right away or else you’d just be doing nothing on company time, and if you don’t tell your shift that you’re leaving then they might not realize they need to replace your position or they might need extra help, most of the time you don’t leave right on time, you usually need to help finish stuff for the next shift, seems like it’d just be a warning if it hasn’t happened before and you genuinely didn’t know

Also probably shouldnt clock in early unless a shift asks you to. At my store we’re really watching labor and if someone clocked in 15 mins early I’d have to have them leave 15 minutes early which can throw off my day.

You should check in before clocking out but you shouldn’t been laid into because you’re new and didn’t necessarily know. It merits a “hey, next time before clocking out check in with us, ok?”

She shouldn't have been so mean and vehement about it, I'm sure you had nothing about it in your training, I know I did not. But it's the nature of our planted positions and the way we have one partner doing each function/role. As soon as you leave, one role is unfulfilled and the keyholder/shift/SSV is responsible to get that role filled. Here's the thing: she should have been more on top of the situation, should have made herself aware of your leave time and should have had a plan. My shifts know when everyone is leaving and gives the "good to go" over the headsets when I have been waiting for a break in the DTO-speak to ask. So as far as I'm concerned, she bitched at you about something that is really on her.

Uhh literally nowhere in the post does it say that she was mean to her. Sternly is not being mean, it’s just being direct so the SSV can communicate that it won’t happen again. So as far as I’m concerned, it sounds like the SSV was doing their job.

No, she wasn't being mean, it just came off a bit cold (then again, I'm a pretty sensitive person). It was 100% my fault for assuming & not double checking with her.

I feel like you should be able to just go tbh. I often pass the threshold for a half because shifts or SM need me to do something and I just don’t think it’s fair. I am entitled to a break at that point for a reason, so by the end I’m exhausted mentally and physically. If I ask if there’s anything I can do on the way out I’ll do it but to assume I will push off a thing I need to do or a place I need to go just for the Bux is disrespectful to my time.
I still communicate when it’s my time to go/ wait to be dismissed bc I’m an anxious people pleaser.
