New Hire, Any Advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by KitTheSune
Hi There! I'm starting at a drive-thru location (US, East Coast if that helps) sometime within the next couple weeks (I have onboarding within the next week) and I wanted to get some advice so I can make sure I train well. This is my second job as I currently work in animal daycare/boarding. Thank you so much in advance!

Questions:

Are pins/buttons allowed on the aprons still? I'm hard of hearing (which I disclosed to the store manager during my interview) so I was wondering if I could wear a button stating that, as well as a pronouns button.

Do the machines produce a lot of heat/Is it hot working behind the bar? Do the machines make a ton of noise?

Black or regular jeans are dress code appropriate, right? Do they have to be straight fit or can I wear skinny jeans?

What's the general quality of the audio/volume of the headsets?

Any tips for going through training (videos and hands on) smoothly?

Best way to make a good first impression with my new coworkers?

Any general tips/advice is super helpful too. I'm looking forward to starting. Thanks again in advance!

1. Yes and yes

2. No, not loud just coffee grinding but its pretty quiet

3. Should be ok, dress code should be provided to you during onboarding.

4. You will have to get used to the headsets. Volume can be adjusted.

5. Just watch them carefully and make sure your trainer shows you how to do everything hands on. Asking lots of questions is good!

6. Don’t cause drama, don’t play victim, respect people who have experience. Can do these things you’ll be just fine.

For training videos, there are captions on them, you just have to turn them on every time. I have audio processing issues, so that was super helpful for me to figure out.

Also. if you're on DTO with a headset, I recommend wearing a loop ear plug or something in the other ear to help you out if that's a position you'll be doing.

I also suggest writing out any accommodations you need and having your SM sign it, and keeping a copy in your file.
