How long is the honeymoon phase? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Redecide
I am a 320 hire (finished training two weeks ago). I still love this job and the people in it, I am seeing posts on this sub about how much everyone hates it. Does it just like wear off over time or just stop instantly? I show up early to hang out and chat with the other baristas and grab a coffee... Always having a good time and laughing etc... I just don't want it to end.

It depends a lot on your background and the store you work at. If you’re paying living expenses paycheck to paycheck (which a lot of people are) and the customers or coworkers are making you miserable there, then yeah, it’s not really something to be happy about.

On the other hand, if you have good financial support along with a solid team and kinder customer base, then it’s generally a better time.

This sounds like a cafe only store or just a really amazing crew. ENJOY IT. bask in your good fortune for as long as you can

I am trying to... I am getting pulled away because a new store is opening (which I don't want to go to). The drive is further, pay is worse, and I don't want to leave my family at this store.

Your mileage may vary...when I worked in drive thru and denied bar practice for months, it was the worst. Now I'm at a hospital cafe and the shifts move us around multiple times so it's nice to me. The customers here are nice and appreciative, and the drinks are diverse. If you eventually dislike your experience, maybe you can look into transferring.

Really depends on the people you work with, I remember being the same way! I still love the job and people and have amazing days, still some bad days but the good outweighs it. I genuinely love working at Starbucks! Its just more of a reality than it being all so new and exciting at this point. Hopefully it stays the same for you! :)

To be painfully honest, 95% of the people on this sub are negative and miserable. If You enjoy what you’re doing, don’t let the people of this subreddit bring you down.

Your experience will differ from others. You (and myself included) are the exception, not the norm. Retail service jobs are tough enough as it is. I have it made when I started off at a bit more than $15 an hour in LA. I have a really good manager, a great district manager, and get along well with all of my SSVs. It has its moments for sure… I would literally need to decompress after arriving home just because the job asks so much of us on shift. But yeah the job has its perks. Free food & drink, free coffee (great if you’re a coffee person), Spotify, therapy sessions, health and dental… a lot of companies don’t offer those. After everything though, SBUX is still a corporation and pursues profit (even though they believe customers are #1). Can’t have it all I guess…

287\*\*\*\* started 3 months before COVID. I still love my job, even when I'm frustrated with it. I might have days where I just don't want to be at work, but who doesn't? All in all, it's still the best job I've ever had and I enjoy working there on the daily.

I’m a 297, and I just hit my 6 month anniversary on the 4th of this month 🥰 but it’s been rough. I have learning disabilities, anxiety, and occasionally crippling perfectionism, so keeping up has been a huge struggle. All in all, I love the people. Although I don’t spend time outside of work with my fellow partners, I greatly enjoy their company. I also drive 35+ minutes to my store everyday, and all of those factors together have drained me pretty quickly. However, I’ll be transferring to a store 5 minutes away from me soon, so hopefully I’ll be able to update you once that happens, so I can see if my love for the job is reinvigorated.

Don’t let people’s bad experiences make you think yours will be bad too! I’ve been a partner for 3 years and honestly I still really enjoy going to work everyday! I’ve had some ups and downs but not everything is perfect all the time. It sounds like you have a good crew so just enjoy it!

No! That is a reflection of management and INDIVIDUAL people! I have an “eeyore” and a “tigger” at my work (easiest way to explain it” and it is just who they are and how they deal with things and life.

It isnt a bad company just bad managers, which is rampant at Starbucks. There is really no honeymoon phase. If the job is good at the start it will always be good.

i’m 294 and it definitely depends on who you work with. because i would literally hate my job if i didn’t like my coworkers. some days it gets really tiring working for starbucks but i still have fun

I was a 248. Mine lasted about two years. Beforehand I worked five years at a theater and it SUCKED, so Starbucks was such an upgrade for me. Scheduled breaks, getting off on time, supportive coworkers, the list goes on.

It was customers that slowly killed my love for the company and seeing how Starbucks sucks the dirty toes, dick, and assholes of every customer, while simultaneously brushing certain needs of partners to the side (like having a company that will support you when you have to make a difficult decision regarding a difficult customer). It's improved a bit because now we have the excuse "if a customer is interrupting the Third Place" to use to reasonably eject someone from the store.

The store I just left was absolutely full of my family. I miss all of them, but I have a career to start. I've become much more cynical during my last year with the company, we were understaffed, always busy, running out of stock all the time (these three are normal), and the customers made it worse with their shitty attitudes. No Pink Drink or Birthday Cake Pops? They scoffed and drove off. "You ruined my day!" Really now?

It might slowly chip away at you, or it might take shark bites out of you. Depends on your crew, customers, AND career aspirations. I had a GREAT crew, but very selfish, childish, braindead customers, and the desire to work in a machine shop and start my career.

Best of luck to you OP, I truly mean it. Enjoy your time with the company and your Starbucks family [:

It really depends on your store and your customer base. I’ve been a partner for 7 months now and i transferred stores from another city. I thought my first store was amazing and I loved it, the store I’m at now is literally the store of my dreams.. but that could all change with a change in coworkers or change in management. The job itself isn’t always fun, but I love my coworkers and love our regulars. Our store is also really solid operationally. We have consistently low OTW times and consistently high customer connection scores. I think it’s different for everyone and your environment plays a huge factor. I have a couple ssv’s that have been with the company for 7+ years and still love it. Not all of us hate our jobs lol

Depend on store managment.
hoewenn 1 points 2y ago
Depends. I started a month ago and I hated it after a week, but that may just because my supervisor is insufferable.

I still like my job and it's almost been a year, I liked it a lot more when I had my old manager tho:(
juju483 1 points 2y ago
For me, it wore off overtime. I don't hate my job by any means, but it did wear me down a little. I used to jump on any over time possibilities, come to hang out at the cafe before/after work and sometimes on my off days.
indyrenegade 1 points 2y ago
I've been a barista at another large chain and small cafes. Barista work is the same work wherever you go. Your team makes the difference between enjoying the job and absolutely hating it. I saw a tiktok where a girl claimed to be on a super busy shift with virtually no training, getting yelled at for making drinks wrong. If your support system at work is bad, just like anywhere else, it'll wear anyone thin.

I will give you one good tip - if you find that your team gets gossipy, do your best not to be a part of it. Lend an ear to your coworkers and be empathetic to them, but don't be a drama instigator.

I had a choice when picking where to work between two locations almost the exact same distance from me on the same road in different directions. My dad wanted me to apply to the one closer to his apartment but I had already applied to the other one simply because I'd seen their help wanted sign first. I didn't know a lot about the environment at the location but I knew that I was beyond burned out working alone at my target starbucks so took a chance despite everyone I know telling me I would hate it here.

I'm a 298 and have been here for 6 months. There are definitely some things that are irritating but that's the fact with pretty much any job. My manager is incredibly kind and understanding as are our shifts and they try and move us around so we're not stuck in the same place for too long.

I definitely would appreciate better pay and more hours but all things considered, especially the fact that I chose to work here only because I saw their sign first I got very lucky with the work environment at my store.

It sounds like you also got lucky with your store and work environment.

It depends on who I work with if I’m being honest. When I first started I loved it and spent most of my off fangs hanging out at my store, but now I only go in when I’m scheduled. I’ve been at the store for about 2 yrs and only started not wanting to go in a little after Covid started. I still enjoy going in some days (I had a great crew today so it was a lot of fun) but some ssvs at my store make my shift kind of uncomfortable for me so I dont enjoy going to work those days. I still like the job but it depends on the partners or customers for me.

I started working end of April 2021 so I feel you. I’m still in my training but I can understand how some people can get tired of working there, especially on bar and right now in the summer is all I’ve seen so far (super busy like everyday). I started training on POS today actually and it’s really nice so far (I work at a rest stop licensed Starbucks so no drive thru and a separate cash system from corporate Starbucks).
