No ice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EmpressDaniQ
Just a policy question. What’s the rule on customers asking for their drinks with no ice? Are we really supposed to fill the cup all the way to the top with ingredients or just make the regular amount that comes in the size? Because it seems to me that customers are expecting that this is a hack.

Don’t waste your energy on it, man - it’s not worth it.

What you can say is, “No problem” - and then there is no fighting or negative energy & it’s done.

There are so many more positive things you can focus on in life than trying to tell a customer, “Well, we actually do it like this”.

It’s not worth your time, homie. Just be cool & move on.

Yeah, our old manager used to tell us we had to say no, but now we don’t worry about it. If other Starbucks aren’t worried about it, it’s fine. I just wish we weren’t getting so many requests everyday lately since it’s a pain.

We had a shift that was adamant about not filling the cup all the way when it’s refreshers w/ no ice. I always just thought it seemed like a weird hill to die on. If they just say no ice, then just do the normal amount of refresher base and the rest with water, that way you’re not wasting product.
As far as iced lattes w/o ice, they’re just getting more milk, not espresso. Oh well.

Until the customer catches on and says no water too lol
NervosaNervous 15 points 2y ago
That’s when we say something along the lines of, “If you do no water and no ice, your cup will not be filled all the way. There will be a considerable gap. Due to nation-wide shortages, we cannot give that much product out.”
dthomp0806 40 points 2y ago
Yes, but starbucks policy is that we DO give that to them. I think the register should automatically adjust the price of drinks that get no water or no ice, and charge them a little extra for that. This would solve the problem. So it's not US charging them, it's the register doing it based on starbucks policy.
NervosaNervous 9 points 2y ago
That I 100% agree with. If there was an up charge for drinks that are usually cut with water and iced to be made with no water and no ice, that would make everything so much easier. I personally fill it, but when that particular SSV was there, they would yell at us and threaten to write us up for it.
sheep_heavenly 2 points 2y ago
But like who cares. You saved two whole drinks for future. You'll still get harassed when the third person gets denied their drink.

At least it's uncontrollable when you're out of product. You can commiserate and be like "I know it sucks, it's been really frustrating". Making the choice to go "yeah, we got it but you can't have it" against policy is asking for a fight.

Idk why everyone complains when people order drinks without ice. It’s not coming out of my paycheck AND it makes my life easier by not having to scoop ice lol
hidethenight17 16 points 2y ago
Exactly. Who cares if I have to add more water/lemonade/milk/xyz. It’s not like it’s my problem
EnbyAlmonds 4 points 2y ago
I only get annoyed because we have to actually make the lemonade and restock the milks when we go through it faster in cases like this
hidethenight17 2 points 2y ago
I can totally see that! We’ve had crazy shortages at my store too, so it can be a problem then.
somewheredaydreaming 4 points 2y ago
Because partners are great at injustice collecting. Honestly, we make our job harder and more annoying by caring about stupid shit like this. We are here to please the customer. Not serve coffee. That's customer service. The more people realize that and stop trying to 'get even' with customers the easier your job and life will be. Just give them the damn drink. Them getting no ice literally has no effect on you unless you allow it 🤣
bitchconpanna 22 points 2y ago
The Beverage Resource Manual says to fill it up. We don’t lose anything by not putting ice if it’s rung in correctly plus it makes some drinks easier to make.
KatyGrace250 21 points 2y ago
I’m pretty sure policy is to just fill it up, but honestly I’m agreeing with a lot of people that it’s just easier to just fill it up and not waste your energy on it. The less you have to deal with customers wrath, the happier you’ll be haha.
But I get the frustration. it can be pain to do no ice sometimes when your low on supply and such.
The only time I’ve denied no ice or told a customer that we could only fill it up to the recipe line is when we were having some MAJOR supply shortages after Texas had that snow storm. (We were down to one bag of espresso and like two boxes of each refresher.... it was bad)
jowens8798 17 points 2y ago
Sis I promise whatever you make, it isn’t enough to be trying to save starbuck’s money. Give them a Trenta when they ask for a tall. Comp drinks for “customer connection”. Raise hell
KaleSalad201 5 points 2y ago
THIS!!!! Like if there was an up charge for no ice we still wouldn’t be making a living wage like the money will NEVER go to us so at this point who cares? I get the frustration if the person is rude about it cause then 100% they can F off but if it’s just about profits, we still get the labor hours for the drink and it’s one less step of adding ice and starbucks stands the chance to lose some money? I’m in.
EmpressDaniQ [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Jeez ok xD
Keyndoriel 12 points 2y ago
This is so unrelated but christ, when I first read the title in my notifications I was straight up like "Great. There's an ice shortage now."

Sbux has me mildly traumatized lol
snowflakenecklace 12 points 2y ago
it may be a hack, but also some people just don't like ice. either way, you don't get paid enough to care.
stormy-nights 7 points 2y ago
Only ones I hate this on are when it’s something that doesn’t easily come out with no ice, IE Venti or Trenta refresh’s because there’s no markings on the shaker, or a shaken espresso, do I just top it with milk and do light ice in the shaker??? There are other ones but I can’t think of them right now
EnbyAlmonds 6 points 2y ago
If someone orders a shaken espresso with no ice(I've actually had it happen a number of times) don't shake it. Just shots in the cup with syrup and milk up all the way. It's stupid and so much milk and they are going to be confused that it doesn't look normal, but that's what they get if they ask for no ice... For the sake of being punctual one time I did attempt to shake the shots with classic without ice and it just leaked hot espresso outside of the shaker all over me. I had to pull new shots... It just doesn't work.

Sidenote: venti and trenta refreshers do have markings on the shaker? I'm not sure what you mean there, it's just a 50/50 ratio for all of the refreshers if you do it without ice. Same as with ice but just less so you have room for the ice.
stormy-nights 1 points 2y ago
I know but it’s easier when the markings are there yk? Like if I get a grande with light ice, I use the venti markings for the liquid, and a tall scoop of ice, and it fills it to the line. And if it’s a grande no ice, I use the trenta liquids, it works lol, but yeah I guess you can just eyeball it
EnbyAlmonds 2 points 2y ago
Tbh half the time I build in the cups anyways so I'm very used to eyeballing it
stormy-nights 1 points 2y ago
Oh…
groovy-worm 3 points 2y ago
Just a theory, but I do think that Starbucks hacks help customer retention. Starbucks already way overcharges, and if the customer thinks they're actually hacking the system by asking for no ice and then return bc they feel it's better than going somewhere else they can't "hack," that's gonna make Starbucks more money in the long run.
EmpressDaniQ [OP] 2 points 2y ago
That’s a good point.
streakystronky 3 points 2y ago
Our store fills it up but hits the extra base button so that we still get an inventory count for it
EmpressDaniQ [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Thanks, my dudes. I mostly just needed to know because our registers are old at Target and wanted to know if we were charging people right.
Aka: there’s no “no ice” “no water” button or anything.
