I finally quit. All the sleepless nights, work drama, stressing out over things I can’t change… I quit. I have never in my life quit on the spot after working one 8 hour shift but YIKES. Hear me out: this is a doozy.
I transferred to a new store in my district and I thought “the SM is hella nice so I’m pretty excited”. Now, my old store has an SM who cares about standards. She coaches partners on things that need to be corrected. So my dumbass assumed it would be the same at my new store… PSYCH!
I walked in for my first shift (5:45AM), no one said anything. No “hello”. No “nice to meet you”. Not even a “who are you??”. Fast forward an hour or so. The opening shift doesn’t count milks, do temperature checks, count the safe, nothing. She didn’t even put cash in all the tills (only three of them..?). She puts me on bar and I instantly notice everything horribly wrong with this store. Flies trapped in the food case, mold in the drains, no syrups were dated (the baristas didn’t even know they needed to be dated, let alone how long), there were no date dots in the store. Instead they use paint markers to write directly on the bins. And when those are empty, they refill it and put a new date on it. None of the food was dated so there’s no telling how expired it is. One girl told a cafe customer to “hold on a sec” while she finished a Snapchat. Another girl showed up in legging and a sports bra. All the partners use the shifts till to put their food/drinks through. But they don’t put in their numbers to do a mark out.. they do a right now recovery on it instead. One girl did this 6 times in my one shift. When I left the store at 1:30, the pastry order had not even been put away (it was delivered at 6:15 in the morning). The worst part of all of this is that the SM acted surprised when he heard all of this. When I got home I cried in my fiancé’s arms and told him I didn’t want to go back.
Anyone else ever had that gut feeling that this is the worst place for you right now??? That was me by 7am. If you’re on the fence about starbucks, just quit. Honestly you do not get paid enough to put up with things like this. I transferred as a shift and I felt so overwhelmed within an hour of being there because I know I was going to be the only one trying to put forth effort to change. And it’s not worth it. I could have coached partners when I was there, but what good what it have done? Some things are not worth my time and effort, and I do not get paid enough for that shit.
If you love your job at Starbucks, good for you. I wish you the best. But if your heart isn’t in it anymore, just quit now. I should have quit months ago and I’m kicking myself for putting up with it for so long. Save yourself the stress and take care of yourself first!!

This is very much a store issue rather than a Starbucks issue. Granted the SM was obviously cleared by higher management as capable of running a store, so it is, in a sense, a Starbucks issue as well.
Seriously though, I hope you reported that situation to ethics and compliance as well as the state health department because what you described is absolutely VILE. That manager needs to get investigated for how the store operates. I’ve worked at over a dozen stores and this by far sounds like an absolute monstrosity. I don’t blame you for feeling overwhelmed and peaced out after experiencing that. It’s sad though because you felt the need to quit just because of that location.

I'm sorry you had to go through this, it sounds absolutely awful over there. There are so many better opportunities out there, sometimes leaving that shit place is what gets you to where you need to be. I do hope that is the case for you!
I'm with you OP, will be putting in my two weeks soon enough. It's not even that it's too difficult or workload or anything - I can't stand fake people and degenerate customers, two things which are high in concentration there. Wishing you all the best with love from a random barista!

Oh my god, noooo. That sounds so awful. I don’t blame you for leaving, one decent barista cannot save that bad of a store. That’s a “report it and leave ASAP” thing.

If my store was like that I’d hate it too.

I honestly think you did the right thing. I sometimes feel the same way, as a partner who gives a fuck about beverage quality, health code, dress code, rules, being kind to partners and customers, etc., etc. (Luckily, my store finally got a good manager who cares about those things too!) The reason you did the right thing is that this company is completely backward in what it should prioritize. Those partners who were breaking rules left and right were not going to actually be held accountable for having done that. The worst that would have happened is they would have been written up. They would not have been fired. Good for you for feeling good about the decision you made.

I also quit after transferring to a new store as a shift. On my first day the shifts all told me that the managers are really hard on shifts and that they trying to write you up over anything. They ended up telling me that I should demote myself because I wanted less hours (not full time and due to the management)

It sounds like their ducks need to be in order.
As a shift though you have to feel comfortable coaching as a supervisor position.
Your post made this sound like it was your first day at that location. Did you give it a little bit of time and try to help turn it around? It’s a whole different situation it they’re are unwilling to change.
