Been considering quitting (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by shebored101
recently have been considering quitting starbucks. I dread coming into work every single shift, my schedule is always changing (rarely do I work the hours written, having to cover shifts, stay later, come in earlier , come in on my days off ) I get along with everyone I work with, but only “click” with one partner that I barely work with. The only reason that stops me is that my SM is a great manager, and I have vacation days I need off in two months. I worked for 5 months here and found myself only genuinely considering quitting when I had to work a 2 1/2 hour peak with just me and another newly trained partner on the floor (on the 4th of July) I really don’t mind myself happy at all at this job and dread it so bad. Is this a dumb reason to quit? I just hear all these other baristas at different locations saying how much they enjoy working with their partners and coming into work. I thought I would develop that, and although I am always a positive person, I haven’t found myself enjoying work.

Honestly, live your life — and it sounds like the only way you're going to be able to do that is to quit. It's not your fault if you're not feeling happy in the job, in fact a lot of baristas I see on this sub are not happy due to the wear and tear of the job/poor compensation/abuse from the company who don't care about overworking their employees so long as their numbers are up. Like, my store manager once expected two of my partners to run a store for 7 hours alone with no breaks or lunch because people called out... My partner said fuck you to that and closed the store until the SM found people. That's the attitude you need to have towards your happiness and life!

If you have a backup job lined up or don't need one atm, I highly recommend thinking seriously about quitting. The thing is, the job doesn't need to make your miserably or unhappy to make you quit. I've been through quite a few jobs in recent months because of jobs that made me unhappy, but also jobs I didn't enjoy at all.

Good luck!

thankyou so much for saying that! I also feel like that. Like there are more things that upset me about this job as a teen than things that I enjoy. I genuinely am now thinking about leaving. I’m a teen and don’t necessarily need a job for any bills, (besides saving up) . I could wait a while before I find a new job. I am not much of a quitter , but this job rlly is rather bringing me down than up.

You have the rest of your life to work. Go enjoy being a teen.

Oh gods, yeah you should be in a place where you can enjoy your life, especially during the teen years. "Having fun in your last years of being a 'kid'" can definitely exist alongside having a job. But, if this place isn't doing it for you (I highly doubt it will for most people), then do yourself a favour and get outta there!

I'm only a couple years past my teens, but I'm a big fan of the idea that a teen should enjoy those years. Especially since I burnt myself out during mine and in retrospect am just like lol wtf did I do that for? Hopefully you don't have any adults in your life who are pushing you to "show responsibility" by having a job or some similar nonsense. It can be helpful to save up, for sure! But you clearly have held jobs, and it sounds like know how to handle yourself in one.

I also think that you being able to identify these things about your job making you unhappy is a healthy mindset to be able to have. So many people are stuck in miserable jobs and still trying to hustle and to make it whilst in a bad environment, and they refuse to admit the latter. Some people don't have options, but the "don't quit until you make it" mindset is not uncommon even among people that do... I'd rather you be able to tell what's not right for you and go to a place where you can be happier, as you deserve! It's not "quitting," necessarily, it's evaluating your situation and alternatives and determining what is best for you. Don't let life bring you down!

Starbucks won’t be your life, and they don’t care about you.

Get out while you can, and find something better.

In my teens, I had jobs that were ok. I didn't drag my feet to work or anything.

I'm in my 30's and I dreaded going to Starbucks. In fact, sometimes I cried on my way to my shifts because I really didn't want to work. I cried in the back room! Especially this last year. I was miserable. I quit about a month ago, without a back up job.

The fact that you are a teen and don't need a job, dude do it!! You're a teenager and these are the DAYS OF YOUR LIFE!!! Enjoy them! It's summer!!! Go have fun and cash our you sick and vacation days!!

Life is too short to spend it at a job that makes your life miserable whether you are younger or young at heart.

I hope my experience has helped you in some way. Best of luck in your journey, friend <3

(If you’re working in a well managed store) It’s a great job to have as a 20 something trying to earn a free degree & pay bills. I would not have stuck around if it meant burning my childhood!

As a teenager I worked at a couple of farmer’s markets (such a great low-stress environment!) and babysat to save money. Take this time to lean into what makes you happy! It took me years to realize my passions were right in front of me… not in my work or in the college classes I was taking.
