If you aren’t patient and can’t handle teaching people with cognitive disabilities you have no business being a supervisor…(self.starbucksbaristas)

As a supervisor, I feel that I may be the one with cognitive disabilities attempting to train others.

And hopefully you can translate that into patience and understanding that when you don’t immediately grasp concepts or forget something, making a scene or chastising employees or not allowing the space to talk through logical order is poor practice.

I have a shift on my team who consistently butts heads with a majority of our baristas, as well as leadership. I just don’t get why they feel the need to be **so** abrasive. I would never reprimand another partner on the floor in front of customers, let alone in front of other partners. This shift has lambasted partners *at register, as they were in the middle of a transaction **with a customer**.* I don’t know, I can barely fathom that.
So yeah, the bar for my store is currently set pretty low. I’m just there to make some coffees and get my team out of the closes on time. Assuming you’re not violating health codes or straight up being a jerk, let’s have ourselves a good time. I’m a leader, it’s my job to answer questions and be there *to lead*. Just be chill while we’re at it.

Some people think being a leader means holding power over people.

Had this myself. Been told off in front of a customer or in one case a whole store of people.

Agreed. Everyone is going through their own personal struggles; patience is key with ALL partners, especially those with cognitive disabilities.

I have ADHD, and all of my supervisors (even the ones I’m not super fond of) have been very good at helping me and also being patient with my bad memory and lack of focus.

OOF this mood. I've got a (straight, cis, white, fundchrist) supervisor like this in my overwhelmingly neurodivergent (+ queer, trans & multiracial) store,,,, it's ugly

i have adhd and i'm lucky to have great leads and coworkers that are patient with me and don't get upset when i ask the same thing several times cause i forgot

Same, mine is mild but I just finished training and everyone from my supervisors to trainer to manager was beyond patient and helpful!! Even when I had to ask whether the tall or short was smallest🥲✌️

This. I have Autism plus a few other learning disabilities. This can slow me down sometimes or I forget things easily. My manager is great, gives constant feedback and is very helpful. Others? Just think I am rude. I have even said, if you have an issue then please say it. Because I genuinely can't always see it.
My tone can be a little flat sometimes, which may come across rude. But I hate people who go direct to the manager. Be a Supervisor and give feedback. Argh. Sorry vent.

Don’t be sorry for trying your best and being yourself

Im a new barista trainer and trained 2 baristas about 3 weeks ago same days one during opening and the other during mids, hated doing the am training 1 of the supervisors would treat the trainee with a harsh and demanding tone on their first time training on warming... constantly yellling that we had to hurry and when I tried letting the partner practice the ssv would stand right next to the ovens to rush the trainee (our dtw times were at 38 seconds)... on our 10 the ssv were shameless enough to tell the trainee to not take offense or to not take it personal.... I did tell the trainee that it was not ok to be spoken to that way mostly while theyre in the learning process

you have no business teaching PERIOD. how do you expect to teach someone anything if you don’t understand how they learn?
The_Septic_Shock2 points2y ago
I tutored a lot in college so I have learned how to teach in different ways, which has served me well teaching new baristas

Thank you! I have a neurological disorder that makes it hard for me to remember things or understand new information sometimes. When I was new one person in particular gave me a super hard time about it and got mad at me often for forgetting things. So frustrating

Yes. Ive been mocked at past jobs for being autistic trans adhd. Been told i need to take adderall to work, so I can go faster. Id always cut and cry in the bathroom on my breaks at that job, was miserable. Current store isnt that bad tho, and my mental health has improved a lot since then too. Also realizing that I’m only making 21cents minute by minute, so I really should scale back my effort by 50% and give much less of a fuck about customers if I want to stay sane at minimum wage job.
