Hey wondering how many other drive thru stores are doing this…. We are taking orders on a handheld tablet during peak … anywhere from 7-10am ish I’m in the good ole florida so yeah it’s hot at 7am (it’s not unusual for it to be 90 f. at 4:30 am when I’m going into work) I don’t totally mind it but it does get hot and I’ve had to buy new clothes, bug spray and going through the deodorant lol. I’m also not a huge fan of the safety aspect some of these people drive with out looking. I’m being as safe as I can but not looking forward to the first person accidentally pressing on the gas… and inhaling all the car fumes too. It can be fun but in my opinion it’s a new expectation that we should be compensated more for…. Been with the bux a decade so I don’t expect them to step up based on the past (also I’m the only one who is doing this at my store for the past 3weeks my manager has done it 2 times total) it does help times …. Anyway thoughts anyone?

I think it's absolutely a danger to worker safety. My store was one of the test stores for it so we've been doing it a while.
The weather is a big issue. Too hot or too cold, we aren't allowed to wear things that would make that bearable, and a store provided coat does nothing for legs, hands, and face.
The stores were not built with this in mind. There's nowhere for a person to walk, and it is very dangerous. I've almost gotten hit several times just taking out the trash (our backdoor opens to the dt lane) because people do not pay attention.
We can't see the barista. Even with a headset, partners are not supposed to be entirely alone anywhere while they are working. By the book we aren't supposed to send trash runs at night individually, what makes it safe to do so during peak? When we have to speak to a customer about their behavior etc. We always have another partner witness the interaction. We cannot adequately protect this partner from potential harassment or harm.
It doesn't speed anything up. It just gives bar more drinks immediately up front. Now that our sticker machines have become single pull it doesn't really help. The only thing that could be done is batching drinks, which were already technically not supposed to do. Especially with the shaken espressos and quads in venti ice most times we are standing around with five prepped cups waiting for shots to pull.
Its tacky ass hell??? The other two major stores (that I'm aware of) that do this are Chic-kill-gays and McDonald's. Not exactly the look Starbucks should be striving for.
But Starbucks has already thrown away "connection" in favor of speed for profit, so they'll do anything at this point at the expense of the partners.
When it was launching several coworkers at my store were very vocal about how much we did not want it. It was pushed upon us anyway. It'll probably be forced upon other stores as well.

LOL. our store manager has made us do this multiple times already when our call box stops working. though we don’t have tablets to do this, we just had to stand out there with a headset on and repeat the order drink for a drink. but I have already stated that if this becomes something that is required of us that I won’t be doing it unless I’m paid more. Because I’m not paid to stand outside in the southern heat just so someone can get their coffee. no ma’am.

Yeah pre tablets a few years ago we had to do it with out a tablet because our facilities manager kept denying our requests to have our speaker box fixed one week later after calling it in every day and having work orders canceled every day….we told our dm that we would just shut down the dt…. Voila it was fixed that day 😂
sirensthigh2 points2y ago
that sounds about right. how sad.
CoffeeChesirecat7 points2y ago
How is this even feasible? Baristas are already doing the job of 3 people instead of remaining planted. This will take even more labor away from production for zero wage increases. No thanks.
XMyshelX [OP]2 points2y ago
There’s no dto person and we’ve been winging it since there’s no plan for this set up
CoffeeChesirecat3 points2y ago
That sounds awful. Half the time our dto person is either doing their job along with warming and window or helping the person make drinks on dt bar along with some cs duties

The worker safety aspect is what I really dislike. My store is in a high crime area, there’s a delivery service next door and they don’t pay any attention while driving (there’s frequent accidents involving them and our customers), and we’ve had people try and intentionally hit us while doing trash runs. I don’t feel safe being out there. It also doesn’t help that I’m extremely pale and no amount of sunscreen will stop me from burning.
Knowing the way my store runs, they’ll keep us out there as long as possible because “nobody else wants to” or they’ll conveniently forget. Getting severely burnt (like getting blisters and sun poisoning levels) or feeling like I’m in danger is all it will take for me to walk off the job or flat out refuse to go back out. I’m not putting my health at risk for a company that will replace me before I can even be declared dead.

Thank you this gives me great ideas we are required by the dm to be outside … I think it really helps with connecting but the thing is for the past 10 years I’ve been a partner in the a/c were in a sub tropical zone so it’s hot now I work half of my day outside it’s much more exhausting even if I only do a 6 hr shift im done for the day after

I’m trying to get them to let me train some other people too it seems like we will be soon 🤞

This is when the company's expectations become unreasonable. Although we have talented partners who can multitask while doing DTO I think it's too much and mistakes like hot/iced and wrong sizes happen because our DTOs are distracted or don't take the time to nail down sizes and hot or iced. That role should be single minded about getting the customer nailed down and committed to their order

I saw discussion here or on another sub that DTO was being expected to pour and finish drip coffees, even make certain crafted beverages in addition to DTO/warming and I thought that was getting to be over the top. As someone frequently on DTR, when DTO is that busy/distracted I would be happy to have them back in the cafe on warming and entering orders on a second POS we have in the cafe or on a tablet if we get one because I am frankly much faster at staging my orders than an understandable distracted DTO and if they are back by me they are in my way. We lose precious seconds when something I need is on their right and they are too involved in their dialog to hand it to me, or they pick it up to put on a sleeve and just stop but I need it now
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points2y ago
Well this would probably help on that front... If you’re outside, there’s quite literally nothing else for you to do but take orders, and it’s certainly easier to communicate with a customer face to face than through a speaker box
MrsHazel4 points2y ago
Absolutely not. I’m in Florida too and my SM when asked about the iPad order things said we will NOT be doing it. Partially because he doesn’t agree with it and partially because of the way our drive is set up we would have to be up against the backs of other stores in the strip.
XMyshelX [OP]2 points2y ago
We’re set up similarly We’re in a strip next to 4 different stores/ restaurants
enlighTAYment3 points2y ago
We do it from 7-9 on the weekdays. As a SSV, I rotate the people who go out there. Our manager said they are working on getting things like umbrellas and fans to make it more comfortable, but I feel bad sending people out there, especially now in the summer. It does help with DT times, IF we are busy enough. If it is not busy, I do bring the partner inside.

We have been told that we will be starting to do the same in a week or so. Someone said something about having to sign a waiver. Is this true? Myrtle Beach S.C. I get the heat part of it there is nooooo way I can stand out in that heat. I can't imagine how you are doing in that Florida heat. Not 100% what the humidity is like there, but if it's 90° out it feels like 100° psh I'm going to fall out 🔥🥵☠️
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
I’m an air conditioner connoisseur lol, there are two kinds of Floridians outdoor and indoor im the latter…. No waiver that I’ve been given and honestly if there was one I won’t take my chances that a large corporation is looking out for my interest in that 😕
dragonridermik1 points2y ago
our store has gotten faster drive thru times, but they aren't considerate with giving us an umbrella of even a chair (texas heat). i like being outside away from the crazy, but i've had some cars run over our cones and they don't pay attention and almost hit us - but hey, more "we're a high volume store we need this" right ?!
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
Exactly my experience too. It seems so thrown together that nothing like the individual location is being taken into account. We are in a retirement area one lady yesterday was looking at me while moving but not turning her wheel she went up over the curb … thankfully she didn’t just step on the gas. You would think they would have an “expert” team come look for safety concerns we don’t even have cones
JeanLucPicardsAss1 points2y ago
Is this tablet available for all stores?
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
I know my store and only one other in my district have it currently( the top two grossing stores in our area) but one of the slowest stores manager came by today to see how it works because they are planning on using it also
JeanLucPicardsAss1 points2y ago
I heard of another store using it to take orders ans hold the cars back a while to get a head start before the sdrive time starts counting. I feel that its the only way we'd get our under 50s drive time, with customers looking for their card at the window or adding drinks, just the general chaos of filling the orders inside, plus we're a new store with a lot of really recent hires. I cant expect new staff to handle rush like pros, everyone is doing their best. But it genuinely feels impossible most days
blah________________1 points2y ago
My store just started doing this. I never had to do it myself but I feel bad for the partners who are forced to stay out there till 9:30am everyday during peak... I live in AZ where we're infamous for our excessive heat warnings, lmao. Plus we've been unusually slow so they're just standing out there doing nothing but sweating. An SSV told me that going out there looks good for corporate and our numbers, or something, idk.
We were actually store-issued an ice pack vest to wear out there, lmao.
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
Wow we have a vest but it’s like a safety one it’s dark green so I blend better 🤣… it does have reflective strips but it’s not nighttime soo 🤦🏻♀️
medusas-garden1 points2y ago
I’m not totally against it as long as it’s just during peak tbh. We’re such high volume but such a tiny store that it would help. But I would hate for that to be a constant thing.
awesomechief9891 points2y ago
I don’t believe many but some stores are testing it. I know one store near me is and I actually think it’s interesting (although it’s hot) and I’m going to pick up a shift soon specifically so I can use that thing. I saw the ASM and talked to her while she picked up product. Since it’s relatively new I would suggest just be nice and ask places that do use it more like Dutch bros or in and out. I’m not even sure if they have locations in Florida 😅
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
Nope none here except like chic fil a….we are using it was just wondering if anyone had strong opinions that have maybe been using it awhile in regards to actual partners how they feel about it
awesomechief9891 points2y ago
Hmm idk Im really friend and know the partners I can try asking the other store but idk when I’ll be able to work there 😂. Most partners I’ve talked to don’t like the idea of it but I think it would be fun
TherudestLiz0 points2y ago
I’m in MD and our store is doing it. I don’t mind it. It’s been 90ish a few days. I brought in sunscreen for everyone to use so we don’t get burned. Apparently we’re supposed to be getting some sort of screen or something to block the sun a bit. Who knows though.
I enjoy it. When I’m taking orders I don’t wait in the lanes, I wait in the stones and try to twist my ankles lol. People can drive a bit fast, I was getting a drink of my water one day and a car just flew in and I was like ‘wait! Wait! I need to take your order!’ Lol. I do enjoy that it’s so much quieter inside now. And our DT times are amazing, so that makes people happy too.
XMyshelX [OP]1 points2y ago
Yeah we have a bumpy ground too almost twisted my ankle lol, the problem here is at 7am is 90 but including humidity it feels like 106…. I do t really burn but I’ve come in with heat headaches and I’m the only one in our store doing it. If it’s my day off they don’t do it, it has helped our times a bit but we are a busy store with one car getting between 20-80 dollars worth of drinks our times can only be shaved down so much. pre-handheld avg time 35-39 seconds at window…. Post 33-44 , are the customers really going to notice less than 10 seconds??
