I think I'm going to quit today. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Alouria6598
A little background to begin: I started working at Starbucks this year as the pandemic restrictions started relaxing where I live. At the same time I also started nursing school. About a month ago, because of school credits, I started another job as a caregiver for the elderly. The pay is great and I work 36 hours in three days (Friday-Sunday). I agreed, though, to stay on a day or two a week to help out with staffing.

Here's my problem: I go in on Thursday (my first scheduled day in two weeks) and see that my SM has me scheduled on days I work my other job for the next three weeks. My availability in the system says I cannot work Friday-Sunday. I tell him as much and his response is as follows "I am not working this weekend so I have not had the chance to review. But have you asked around for coverage? Your shifts are still your responsibility."

Needless to say I am livid and will not be going in today or tomorrow. I did call out with the shift lead on duty. Do I just quit at this point? Escalate it to the DM/Corporate?

I tried to do a nice thing by staying on and I feel like I'm getting jerked around for it.

Just quit. You don't owe anything to anyone. Starbucks will live to see another day

fun fact! if the SM tries to schedule you outside your availability, the system will pop up a flag to warn them. They can dismiss this flag, but the system will track how often they schedule people out of their availability and the DM -- if they're any good -- will want to know why if that number is high.

I know this because my SM asked me to update my availability when I took on a regular shift outside of my listed availability, so her DM wouldn't scold her about abusing me.

I feel like there’s the ability to put your availability in the system for a reason. You’ve known you aren’t available those days and are still open to work the days you ARE available on. I say go to higher up, because this sort of thing isn’t about you being irresponsible, it’s your SM is genuinely unfair, and prioritizing their CHOSEN off days for your REQUIRED off days. They’re responsible for making the schedules fair and around peoples availability. Your job isn’t your entire life and it’s disrespectful for them to assume you work on their time!
Keep us updated! I want everything to work out for you!!!

I have never formulated my availability around what I prefer to work. My availability is always I can be here on these days and nothing else because I use my availability to block out my school times. And in this case the work schedule of my other job.

And having appropriate staffing (or any staff) is a preference too, I guess.

LOL that is too funny, I'm still considering it. I don't mind working there but this is just ridiculous.

You should quit, then tell them that finding coverage is now their responsibility.
TheNutsi 9 points 2y ago
Also just because you’d be going to higher up, doesn’t mean you want them punished!!
You need your availability and schedule fixed without you having to bite the bullet and potentially get fired!
Wish I had added that to my first comment.
