any tips on how to handle being misgendered by customers? i’d like to correct people politely or point out that my pronouns (they/them) are on my apron but i get too scared.

Karen’s gonna Karen. I usually just ignore them and move on. Nine times out of ten they aren’t standing there long enough to even listen to us in the first place so it’s not worth the hassle of trying to correct them.

Edit: I’m not trying to sound mean. I use she/they pronouns and I’d be the first one correcting anyone that misgenders a coworker because it annoys me.

Trans girl here 🙋‍♀️ I get misgendered about twice every day. I have to reframe my perception of them addressing me by male pronouns. I live in CA so people here have been acculturated to say “man” or “dude” just casually. And it’s when people are being careless and casual that they misgender me. I don’t assume malice is behind it. It does tick me off though, I won’t lie.
Oh but when I DO get gendered correctly… those FEELS! 🥰🥰

as another non-binary partner who uses they/them pronouns, i honestly just deal with it. yes getting called sir everyday makes me so dysphoric but i’m also so busy that it’s just better to ignore it and move on. it happens so many times each day and pointing it out or correcting people just sounds mentally exhausting :((

Honestly I've only ever gotten inappropriate questions when a customer finds out I'm trans. There has never been a respectful customer to me in that regard. So I stopped trying and I let them think I'm not trans to just get by. My coworkers know me and respect me, and those are the people I really have to interact with.

are you on DT or cafe register usually?
stoneylizzard [OP] 3 points 2y ago
my store is cafe only and we’re very slow, slow enough to chat with nearly every customer. i’m on bar the majority of the time and do a lot of hand offs.

not gonna lie, it will just exhaust you correcting every single person that just comes through once or twice on your pronouns unless you really want to try. make sure regulars know how to address you and if you’re on register introduce yourself with your name and pronouns and ask them how they’re doing
