Hey guys, I know nobody talks about this anymore but I have a quick question to see if this applies to anyone else/if any managers could help me out.
As many of you probably know, last may, partners were given the option of reduced hours, “termination”, or unpaid leave during the beginning of covid. I chose the termination and collected unemployment because my dad is high risk.
I am also a college student so I put my unemployment money towards a car to get myself to and from campus and then my day to day expenses. As of today I was notified that I did not qualify from the weeks of January 2nd and on. Essentially saying I have to pay back $12k which is the money I have been claiming since then. I do not have 12k lying around so my big question is:
How did starbucks qualify their partners for unemployment? And is there any paperwork I can get from my store that will exempt me from having to pay back benefits which I was clearly told I qualified for. Any help or information on the matter is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like Starbucks fucked you.

1. Different states have different unemployment laws. You’ll want to look into the reason they denied you.
My best guest is that you exhausted the amount of unemployment available to you but continued to claim it and they’ve just now caught it because the system is overloaded. I believe my state offers 14 weeks of unemployment, then with COVID you could get another 14. I’m unsure if they ever extended any benefits past that.

That is a good guess but they give me a monetary determination ever now and again and my most recent one gave me a limit of like 25k (which i had not gone over) and allowed me to claim until september 4th 2021. Gunna call and appeal tomorrow. I live in MA btw so laws are definitely different than other states.

You got paid twelve thousand dollars in 6 months to not work?

Yup, the system is fucked, iv probably gotten over 30k overall to do nothing. And if i go back to my job I make less than what I did on unemployment so it’s 0 incentive to go back and put myself/my family at risk.

States have their own rules that may disqualify you from receiving unemployment benefits. If they are asking you to repay, you may have made a mistake while filing a claim. You will probably have to contact your states unemployment office for more details.

I remember one week they changed their whole system. I couldn’t find the “i got fired” option so I selected the one that most closely applied to me. I’m hoping that that one mistake is what messed it all up but I can’t be sure. They also never specifically asked me to repay, they just said i’m not eligible as of January 2nd, which I assumed meant they have overpayed me since then and I must pay it back. All in all i’m hoping for the best and appreciate your insight.
