Taking shifts and tips (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Seaweedgreedy
So I’m fairly new I’ve only been at starbucks for about a month and a half now but I just agreed to take a shift for a coworker for the first time. I’m curious how this will work though. I’ve had someone take a shift for me before and they told me to just let the sm know, so I did. Do I just let the person who’s shift I’m taking take care of telling our sm and what not? Also will I get his tips for that day? Is there any form I need to fill out before hand? I feel annoying for asking cause this should’ve been explained to me during training.

There is a shift change form in the book, or sometimes it’s kept in the DCR binder. either way, you need to fill it out and sign, both you and the person you’re switching with, and then get a shift or manager signature. yes, you get the tips for the shift you work, even if you weren’t scheduled for it. it’s all based on the real hours you worked.

Okay thank you! What happens if you agree to take someone’s shift the day before when neither of you will have time to fill that out?

as long as you write it in the DCR and let your shift know, it should be fine. i’ve covered shifts where nobody knew but they don’t mind because they have the coverage. it won’t affect tips or anything because it’s based on when you clock in, so as long as you clock in or write your hours in the book, you’re good.

Alright sounds simple enough. Thanks again!

I've worked for Starbucks for over four years and never filled out a form to swap a shift with another partner. Some store manager being extra. Lol. That being said, the reason to make sure your manager knows is in case the person who agreed to take your shift doesn't show up. You want them to be in trouble for a no show, not you since you were responsible and got coverage. Re tips: cash tips are calculated off a report that is run based off all clocked hours. Digital tips are added to your check...again, based on clocked hours.
