cup collecting (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hsah1rac
Ok hi i'm a newer partner and I am really struggling to understand why people collect our cups and do crazy things to get some of them. it's not like any of them are going to be of insane value. and I mean this in the nicest way possible I'm genuinely just trying to understand what's in it for you if you are a collector or if it's just some thing for fun that's totally cool too! everybody has a thing!

I don’t totally get it either. But people collect lots of things and Starbucks cups are one of them.
I don’t get collecting funko pops or hotwheels, but people go crazy for those too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As a funko and hot wheel collector I would say mainly for hot wheels is just something we are passionate about is just like how some people find make up a collectible or something cool to have I find it unappealing. Everyone has their own view on different items.

That’s my point. 😁
We may not understand why some people collect Starbucks cups because it isn’t “Our” thing. But to the Starbucks cup collectors, they find joy in them.

I collect ink pens. It’s not for everyone. 😂

So one big tenet of consumerism is creating exclusivity and accessibility. Most luxury brands use this model. By creating, and marketing an item that creates a feeling of belonging and attainment, a consumer will begin to foster loyalty to a brand.

A big way to hone this idea is using a model called 'false-scarcity' (Think of the Disney Vault for their movies in the 90's). By creating a limited number of items, against the desirability of said items it then creates a huge supply/demand chain.

For others to attain the exclusivity and accessibility they will acquire by any means necessary to secure it, including the buying and reselling of said items.

SBUX knows what they're doing by producing a small amount of products and creating this false-scarcity. They also know, that despite them just being able to produce more, and actually gain money into their own pocket, people will game the systems and create a secondary market where SBUX doesn't actually see a financial return

TL;DR: SBUX makes the cups to silently drive business, alienating the potential of financial security, by creating the idea that 'there is no more' despite being able to freely them make available at will.

as is true in any business I never thought of it that way. I appreciate your perspective

I get you, when it comes to the US stuff. But I did get on Ebay and buy some Chinese merchandise because it was totally lovely, and it arrived quickly. I'll probably get more Chinese things on Ebay. But I feel you, I don't even see what they see in our beverage products. There are only maybe 3 things I drink and they are all unsweetened. Edit - and don't even get me started on the bland food

i've always said that Starbucks food is just bougie hospital food

Idk how but I’ve been working here for 3 months and I somehow already have 5 reusable cups???? Idk my brain just says “Ooh pretty” and my hands get grabby. I do use them for my drinks when I’m working so I don’t use so much plastic tho :))
