Thinking about becoming a trainer… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PristineQueen14
So I’ve been thinking of asking my SM about becoming a trainer. On July 29th it will be my one year anniversary at Starbucks and I’ve been a SSV since about December. I’ve never trained anyone before (at any job) and I feel like it might be good to step out of my comfort zone and gain some new skills. I think that I could likely learn a lot from it like how to better teach others and also really double down on my Starbucks knowledge in general. If you are or have ever been a trainer/SSV, what are your thoughts and recommendations?

I was a trainer before I became a SSV. Now that I’m a ssv I technically don’t “train” anyone. However I’ve found that working as a SSV is basically means I’m a trainer as well. There is always an opportunity to help a barista grow, ie coaching, especially a green bean fresh out of their first week! Even if you aren’t a trainer, remember there’s always opportunities to help your fellow baristas grow and learn!! For example, we have a new barista who has been working for a few weeks, but this week I noticed he could use some help with sequencing. So I made some time to step aside from what I normally do during shift, and helped him practice! Good luck! You’re doing great.

yeah honestly if you like the job its rewarding to see people learn, go for it. i personally am pretty hands-off, new people starting tend to overthink recipes & doubt themselves, i really let them try to figure it out before i step in again. theyll ask you for a chart for shots & syrup pumps, dont make it.

idk having a chart to study a couple times really helped me in the beginning to be able to visualize the correct number of shots/pumps so i think for some people that’s what works well for them to learn. not to refer to every time you’re making a drink but to have to study and memorize on your own

I thought you had to be a trainer before you became a shift.
