Are we legally allowed to strike? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CommercialRound2197
Hey y’all! I’ve been seeing stuff about the National General Strike on October 15th recently and would love to participate, just don’t want to get fired haha. Does anyone know the legal aspects behind it and what I’d have to do to keep my job secure? And would striking for all their goals plus new espresso machines be unlawful? Our espresso machines have been broken and pour watered down shots, we’ve had customers call, yell, and complain to our DM about it. If so I’ll just stick with the normal objectives :) thank you!

General strikes are not a one day event though. They are supposed to last until the demands are met. They need to clarify this in other places than their website, because it seems a lot of people aren’t familiar with this.

Are you saying I wouldn’t be protected if it was only one day? I’m all for doing it multiple days if that’s what you mean :)

I mean technically The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 protects your right to strike for any amount of time since we work in the private sector, but because most places are at-will employment they might try to disguise the reason. Corporations are disgusting like that.

That being said, yeah people might get fired. But if enough people do this to put the economy to a halt so they have to change all this? Then that job is of little concern anymore, and theyll most likely get the job back, or a better one. The fear stops a lot of people, and I get it. People live paycheck to paycheck. People need to work to survive. But we also need the majority of people do actually participate for us not to live like that anymore. Our labor is the biggest bargaining tool we have. Without us- it all fails. That’s why general strikes are so effective when enough people actually do it.

the general strike demands for $20/hr and 4 day work weeks, pigs would have to fly for that to happen in corporate america

Do some research on the labor movements that got us the rights we have today. Starting back in the late 1700's, workers demanded shorter days and people thought they were crazy too, but the strikes were effective. These early activists are why we have 8 hour days, among other vital workplace rights we take for granted. There's power in numbers, I believe we'll make progress on at least one front /demand

Just request the day off lol

General strikes aren’t a one day event. They’re supposed to last until the demands are met, because only striking a day isn’t gonna get anyone to change anything. So requesting the one day off that it starts doesn’t do anything for the cause.
