Can someone who has had FFS through here walk me through the process? (Specifically through Keojampa) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GeeSuspended
Hello, I'm a trans woman partner who is currently on an insurance plan (Aetna Silver) but is confused as to the whole FFS process.

I've had my consultation, I've got enough money for my surgery deposit, I've had my one letter be okay'd by my advocate, but I haven't been contacted on putting down that deposit or anything.

In an email with the patient coordinator,
, it said I would be contacted after my "insurance determination and LOA process".

I'm just wondering if anyone who's had the whole process done semi-recently can give any advice, I feel left in the dark by a lot of things. I know re-enrollment is happening soon and that may change some things as well, but I still appreciate any information y'all can give (like was there anything you needed to do on the Sbux-side before you could actually place your deposit, that I'm missing). Thanks!

Hey, haven’t had FFS yet but I’m scheduled for it next year and have also been setting things up.

My best advice is to contact your advocate about the deposit and maybe ask all these questions if you haven’t. Either email them back or call Starbucks advocacy at (866) 849-7103 and ask for the name of the advocate you’ve been speaking to.

As far as “insurance determination” goes, here’s how it works:

Most insurances actually don’t cover FFS among other gender affirming procedures. What will happen is that they will send your bill through your main insurance, get it denied, and then send it through another insurance for denial. Then starbucks will reimburse you fully for the procedure. This is the process my bills usually go through for hair removal since it isn’t covered by insurance.

As for the LOA process, you would need to contact sedgwick in advanced about your procedure so you can get LOA pay while you recover. (I unfortunately don’t have the phone number on hand, so ask your advocate for it)

As for re enrollment, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter what insurance you have for FFS since it’s 100% reimbursed anyway, **but I still recommend asking your advocate and/or surgeon’s office about coverage, just to make sure.**

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the advice! I haven't gotten like a clear cut answer from my advocate on the deposit and everything, but I guess I should hit up Sedgewick soon. I just thought it'd be too early since I don't even have a date?

I would really try to ask them more questions about the deposit and see if Starbucks Advocacy has worked with your surgeon before or can contact them. The deposit might also be covered.

I’m lucky to have an amazing, informative advocate who’s on top of everything. But I’ve heard some of the people in Advocacy aren’t so much. Bug them with your questions and ask them to specify! Maybe do it over the phone if you can so you can have a back and forth conversation. And if you can’t get any of your questions answered, try asking to speak to a different advocate. You deserve to know your coverage and how the processes work.

As for sedgwick, I would definitely wait until you have a date set up, but ask for the number from your advocate for later!

Hey, when your partner gets hired and they’re ready to start the process, tell them to contact Starbucks Advocacy at (866) 849-7103. It’s not very laid out anywhere who to contact for coverage so I’m just letting you know!

? Wait there's an actual process to getting surgeries?? I just used the insurance (top surgery) I didn't know there was an actual Starbucks process 👀

Well, it only applies to gender affirming procedures not covered by regular insurance. I’m getting bottom surgery in january and my advocate told me I would just have to get everything covered through my BCBS plan with starbucks. Kinda bull shit if you ask me, I’m still struggling to save up while I get paid minimum wage ;’)

As far as things like FFS and hair removal go? They’re not accepted by regular insurance because it’s “””cosmetic.””” I get electrolysis hair removal every week on my face and it’s 100% reimbursed by starbucks, and I’m going through the same process for FFS next year.
