i’m a very new green bean (and started my training this week). i was looking at the schedule for the upcoming weeks and noticed i’m only working 4 hour shifts resulting in very little hours. is this because i’m still new? they’re not marked as training shifts. will this change and will i get more hours?

In my last two districts, baristas only got 4 hour shifts and SSVs got 35 hours a week. The district I am in now I only get about 30 hours a week as an SSV. And baristas even get 3 hour shifts sometimes. In my original district I got 40+ hours a week as a barista. It all depends on the district.
The only solution is to pick up shifts at other stores. Visit other stores and leave your name and number for them to call you for coverage.

thank you! i’ll do that!

It might be training shifts. My SM doesn’t like to schedule training for very long hours bc it’s draining and overwhelming. Definitely talk to them though if they don’t turn out to be training hours.

i’m planning to speak to my SM my next day of work! thank you!

I would ask your sm about that, (or for more hours). Usually, they will help you as much as they can, but your schedule will surely change soon.

thank you!

Did you tell your SM how many hours you need/want? I’ve always worked ~35 hours, even when I was training, because that’s how many hours I needed
coffee97ct [OP]2 points2y ago
i didn’t, which is on me. i’ll speak with my SM the next time i go to work!

it honestly depends on the location you work at and your managers personal preference on how to schedule training. when i was training i worked like 11-15 hours a week and now i work 25-30 hours a week. when i was training i mostly did 4 hour shifts but now i mostly work 6 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts so it’s kinda a lot

yeah, that’s what i’ve gathered so far! thank you! :) i’m hoping i’ll be getting longer shift after the first few weeks and will definitely talk to my SM

I'll start out by repeating what others have already said (and that you have also acknowledged), in that you should talk to your SM about how many hours you'd like.
That being said, many SMs I've worked with don't schedule a lot of, if any, long shifts (think 6hrs or more) for green beans in their first few weeks because longer shifts can burn someone out, especially when you're still getting your feet wet. Heck, I left the company awhile ago and came back this year, and even longer shifts as a returning partner were a little rough on me during the first couple of weeks. So that would be **MY** guess, but again, just try to work it out with your SM.
Good luck and welcome :)

Did your SM specify how many hours you’d get a week? Unfortunately unless it’s written down or throughly discussed they aren’t required to give you x amount of hours. I’d ask if it’s less for training and if this will be your normal schedule
coffee97ct [OP]1 points2y ago
they’d didn’t specify. i didn’t think to ask in the interview about hours etc. since the job posting said full time!
arcanalalune3 points2y ago
Job posting shouldn't have said full time. All baristas and ssvs are considered part time workers.

Hmmm full time is minimum 30hrs a week at my store…which isn’t available to anyone unless they pick up shifts or are SSV and above
