Is it wrong to be annoyed at a partner who orders three very customized drinks after their shift, during peak?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gemlikbase
Because I’m annoyed. Fuck her.
SpookySteve 153 points 2y ago
This is why I make my own drinks.

Also, anyone else notice how there's two kinds of partners when it comes to ordering their own drinks when not on bar; the ones who are pretty simple or at least will make up for it in some way (usually tipping well), and the fucks who ask for the silliest custom drinks when we all know damn we they'd be bitching for hours if they had to make it on bar.
BatWeary 45 points 2y ago
When I know I’ll be making my own drink, I’ll order complicated drinks. But if I know I won’t be making my own I order simple drinks. It’s an unspoken “barista rule” imo.

On your day off, it’s whatever. At that point you’re a customer yanno?
cpv_91 3 points 2y ago
IMO no matter when, end of shift or as a straight up customer, we all know how hard this job can be, save you're overly complicated drinks for when you're working and can make them yourself. Just because you're on the other side of the counter is no time to torture a fellow partner with Karen level drinks.
givemeapples 27 points 2y ago
I advocate for everyone making their own drinks, especially as partners who know the ins and outs of our ingredients know exactly what they want with their own drink.
Unfortunately it's actually against Starbucks policy to make your own drinks.
My store used to make our own drinks as we had a manager who was laid back and didn't care about petty things like that. But then we switched managers, and my new manager was extremely by the book... which was absolutely horrible. Because not only (as a very high volume store) would our 10 almost be over by the time we get our drink (in fact, you'd be lucky if you weren't spending your whole 10 lining up to order your drink) but some of us liked our drinks customized a fair bit. And we know it can be a pain to navigate a clusterfuck of a drink while you have a dozen customers breathing down your neck wondering where the fuck their drink is. :/

We had a new ASM once that was so CRAZY by the books. She’d write you up if you even LOOKED at another persons screen while their till was still up, so no go on ringing even one person up quickly even if the line is long and everyone is staring at you. Stuff like that, but for EVERYTHING. It was so draining trying to be 100% all the time and made life a living hell. Couldn’t even pull 2 shots of espresso and zombie walk into the back room for your morning shift without waiting in the line….Until I started to close with her, and realized she dgaf about anything really. if your a good closer like me, she was totally chill. She just had a “persona” during the morning peak/ when our manager was there/ possible times our DM could show up. She asserted her dominance, played by the rules, but once we hit the “safe period” in the evening she just wanted to roll out of there. Ladder climber basically.
zombiecabbage 3 points 2y ago
My SM literally won’t let us make our own drinks. So annoying

We had a partner come in at 5pm and order 11 or 12 drinks, on their off day. They work that shift a lot and know that our store always gets slammed from 4:30-6:00. It was awful. I was off at 5 and had to stay an entire hour late. I make my own drinks and wouldn’t ever do this to my partners.
MonstrousGiggling 41 points 2y ago
"Had to stay"

Actually don't think you "had" to. I might be wrong but I dont think they can actually keep you past your alloted work time.

If you stayed because you didn't want your partners to drown in Frappuccinos and to help them I totally get that though.

I dont mean this in a criticizing way or anything either , just dont want you to be thinking you literally have to stay. You don't owe this company your time.
[deleted] 43 points 2y ago
I know I wasn’t forced against my will. But the next shift was understaffed and I wasn’t just going to tell me partners “Sorry bout ya,” and leave. I owe it to them if I can.
MonstrousGiggling 22 points 2y ago
Totally get that.

I know some people honestly believe they "have" to stay or get fired so I just wanted to clarify! Thats nice of you to stay and help out, make sure you treat yourself to something nice in return =).
FYIWalshy 0 points 2y ago
I don’t think you do. You did your time go home. It’s not your job to make sure the place is fully staffed. Call your boss dude is making salary he can pick up the slack. You don’t owe anybody and the more you do that they take advantage of you. People can wait for their drinks. I always hated that customer mentality Starbucks feeds you. It’s overpriced burnt coffee. It will never be that serious to stay after your shift.
foxyfit 37 points 2y ago
It is not wrong to be annoyed, they are engaging in dink behavior. Common decency and barista law states that the golden rule is to not do things that make your coworkers jobs more difficult.

I once worked with a partner like this and collectively we gained revenge by going in and ordering stupid drinks when they were on bar. It was a multi-day multi-barista pronged approach to giving them a taste of their own medicine. Without us ever saying a word, this partner quickly began to realize the error of their ways and from then on the kept their orders resonable.
sten45 23 points 2y ago
If they carry their weight during a shift, no. If they are a shit bag, yes.
SyerenGM 6 points 2y ago
Exactly. That all being said I'd make my own drinks when I could. Harris Teeter that my starbucks was in had a rule though we couldn't make our own drinks, but we only followed it if the store manager was there. The other managers didn't give a damn.
KillerBEAT 19 points 2y ago
Nah, just don't show it.
ourgodwhofucks 18 points 2y ago
we recently had a relatively new partner come through drive and order 14 customized frappuccinos & then add another at the window :D
Ok-Consideration-970 15 points 2y ago
Not very courteous but like if she's off at peak, she's off at peak. 3 customs can't be bought, made, and kept really during a 10, maybe a lunch
radpandaparty 13 points 2y ago
No. If you're going to be high maintenance you can make your own drink.
rudebii 9 points 2y ago
No, your displeasure is merited but you’re better off just sucking it up because you can’t technically stop her…but you also don’t have to cover her shifts or swap shifts with her when she asks, or any other types of common favors partners do for each other under no obligation.
star_pants 7 points 2y ago
Order difficult drinks while I'm slammed with customer orders? All my partners know their drinks will be last in line. Get yourself something reasonable? It'll go straight into the queue. Also also you want to make your 4 difficult drinks yourself and bar is slammed? I'm 110% going to kick you out of the bar area because it's small and I don't need bar partners trying to dodge your dead weight when they're already trying not to trip over each other.

Also, interesting to see how easy it is to tell how long a partner has been with the company based off of what they order. Ever just hear a drink, "I got numbers" and know exactly what they're going to start with?
Snarkybratt 1 points 2y ago
What’s the I got numbers thing, lol?
star_pants 2 points 2y ago
When people order a free drink, or before it was a free daily drink the discount and they say they have partner numbers, but they ordered like a VBF with 18 modifications and you know their numbers are going to indicate they just started and have never worked a peak on bar.
FYIWalshy 7 points 2y ago
I used to tell people make their own shit. Why put drink in a queue and wait for it. Just go back there and get it done. It’s different if it’s your day off and you come in, I got you. However after your shift that’s on you. You can make drink after a shift don’t that person.
iindiieecindiee 7 points 2y ago
Those partners are usually the ones that work like 12 hours a week and are at window or pos all day so they don’t really do much but connect with people. That’s how it is at my store, all the morning or mid people who don’t care about their partners working their asses off to get everyone’s drinks out and they just stand there and stare just like the customers. Annoying!!

We have a partner from a different store that comes to ours during peak and orders several drinks with crazy customizations, several food items AND her coffee bean markout for the week (ground of course).
Why she can’t get the beans at her own store? I don’t know.
I really don’t like her!
blah________________ 6 points 2y ago
Omg there's so many partners at my store that do this, it drives me nuts, lol. One girl in particular orders three Trenta waters after her shift in addition to her super complicated beverage, and she always clocks out during peak. 🙄 Sometimes I just don't make them to be petty, especially when I have a lot of customer orders.

Idk, when I first started 8 yrs ago, partners always made their drinks if they were on the floor that day, even if it was before or after their shifts. I've stuck to that practice and always get annoyed when I have to make another partner's drink, and I certainly don't like other people making mine.
Swan97 2 points 2y ago
Technically it's against policy to make your own drinks but my store doesn't care. In fact they encourage it (especially with green beans) so you can practice on bar without affecting times or customers. I also don't mind waiting if it's busy and there isn't an open bar for me to make my drink on
WhoreDiaries 3 points 2y ago
I try not to order anything complicated (3+changes) but regardless, I ALWAYS offer to make my own drink, especially if I can see the bar person is busy.
blahblahcapitalism 2 points 2y ago
when i was a green bean (maybe a month and a half in), i covered this girl’s shift and was put on solo bar in the afternoon. the girl whose shift i covered came in and ordered like 7 drinks in the cafe cause she was was in a fight with the ssv. ya pls don’t be that person
46patisse 2 points 2y ago
Worst partner in the world
gemlikbase [OP] 1 points 2y ago
And then she had the nerve to tell us all to have a good day.

I got so pissed yesterday because one of our partners came through the drive thru ordering an iced peach tranquility, plus two other heavily customized drinks and two food items, and then ordered another customized Frappuccino once they got up to the window.

Like, you have the right to order whatever you want, but this partner seemed to not even register that they ordered such time consuming items.
pixieuppercut 2 points 2y ago
Nope. It's rude.
I tell fellow partners that they need to come make their drinks if we're busy. Otherwise I make them wait behind the customers drinks.
Magnhild94 2 points 2y ago
They should make their own drinks if they’re working and super complicated. I don’t mind making partner drinks but super complicated drinks suck so don’t off-load that on me - do it your own dang self!
MemesandSpeech 2 points 2y ago
I get annoyed at a partner who bosses me to make her "special" drink before she takes her 10. She would get mad if I made it wrong and cost her break time. -\_-
Dragonfruitme 2 points 2y ago
The audacity of some people.
ohamilkshake 1 points 2y ago
absolutely. one of the morning people at my store usually orders 3 or 4 trenta refreshers, 3 or 4 ice waters, and sometimes 3 or more food items (usually egg bites and paninis). it makes me want to gouge my eyes out & you'd think they'd know better but what can you do🤷🏻‍♀️
edit: they're also a reg only and sometimes warming person so they don't understand how much the usually bar people are annoyed with it
LZARDKING 1 points 2y ago
I would straight up say no unless your store is strict about not making your own drinks
ObnoxiousR 1 points 2y ago
What i would love to see
hexsan91 1 points 2y ago
I mean, different stores operate in their own ways. At my store, we were so busy that the “partners can’t make their own drinks” rule was heavily enforced.

With that said, I had no problem ordering complex drinks for myself after a long shift. I never ordered anything over the top, though.
MrChaotic03 0 points 2y ago
You can be annoyed, but don’t voice it. Anyone on the other side of the bar is a customer, and your job is to make customer’s drinks. Just because they’re a partner doesn’t make them any less allowed to order customized drinks.
