Have you heard about October 15th? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cinnamonmarigold
There’s a general strike planned for this day. You can find info of reasons and demands on the October Strike website.

I’m unsure if I’ll be able to abstain from work yet. But a strike is to slow to disrupt the means of production. If you feel uncomfortable not showing up for work, doing our work slowly, as if we’re full staffed, contributes to the disruption.

Not engaging economically helps, too, by avoiding purchasing things and streaming anything with ads. If you’re out and about, wearing a red bandana in solidarity as it is a traditional symbol of workers’ rights. I’m looking forward to spending the weekend outdoors and reading at home.

I haven't talked to my fellow partners yet, but I will be striking. The last federal increase in minimum wage was in 2009 and it was less than a dollar raise too. I hope the turnout is great enough to make some real change

A general strike absolutely needs to happen. To afford a modest one-bedroom in any US state (meaning your rent is only 30% of your income), you'd have to make at least $20.40/hr. I make $12/hr as a barista. With costs of housing, transportation, food, personal care, internet/phone (basically the minimum that requires me to be the healthy human needed to complete the job), I'm practically giving away my labor. No wealth-building. No wiggle room. I'm surviving, but not thriving. I want to live on my own without being afraid of homelessness. People want to move out of their parents' house. People want to leave their relationships.

People have been asking for $15/hr for so long it's no longer enough.

The general strike is decentralized. There is no person, organization, union, or party behind it.

most of the demands are: $20 min. wage, Medicare 4 all, environmental regulations, 12 weeks paid paternity leave, 25% corporate tax rate w no loopholes, 4 day work week

Because the strike is decentralized you don't have to align yourself with all of these demands. The sentiment is to force the government to for once enact policies that would make your life quantifiably better. I personally would love it if the workers in my city would advocate for better public transportation and pedestrian infrastructure. Like I would appreciate it if the chances of my getting hit by a car or dying by heatstroke on the way to work were lower.

the website is $1

the housing stat is from this study: $1 . I would check it out, it basically confirms what we all know to be true: affording a decent place to live is becoming impossiblee

For sure! If you don’t feel comfortable not showing up, spread the word, don’t buy things that weekend if you can help it, and not be mad at your coworkers who don’t come in 💕 there’s many ways to participate!

I've said it before but the best way for this strike to work is to get in contact with the Starbucks affiliated iww or contact a local union. If we have labor attorneys we will be more protected and more folks will be able to strike

Best way to be slow is to connect with every customer, and have good vibes behind the counter. If the customers are in a good vibe area, they won't feel as if they are waiting long.

This comes fron personal experience when I was an SSV working a busy Sunday morning with 3 missing out of 8. My team that morning was all on board with the idea to just work our best and slowest to show our manager and higher-ups how much they could lose on shotty schedules. To be clear, every drink and food item was made to our best quality and delivered with personal service.
