Barista essentials off Amazon? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by carcinophile
I saw my coworker rocking a clip that holds their sharpie and attaches to their apron and I want to order some for myself. While I'm looking, are there any other nick-nacks you would recommend for barista-ing?

^(My store is pretty relaxed about having non-Starbucks pins, gear, etc. so please keep your own store's policies in mind before buying anything.)

Insoles. I got good use out of a container of electrolyte pills when my store was too hot in summer. Whatever fun writing / drawing instruments you’re willing to shell out your own money for, be it for cups or nametags. A foot roller. Compression socks.

UV flashlight to check bills. Every store should have one, but they're pretty cheap JiC yours doesn't. Like 10 bucks.

I used to carry my own box cutter since most of the time the store's cutter is duller than plastic knives on the condiment bar. Something like $1 is cheap, small, clips to your pocket.

I guess it depends on the store, but I always wore a watch, almost always a GSHOCK with multiple alarms (to keep track of breaks/tasks/shift changes/etc), stopwatch, and hourly chime. Barring wearing a watch, a small portable alarm clock with a clear, easy-to-read face.

(As a note to anyone looking for neat ideas, double check if watches are allowed in your location. In my area it isn’t just a dresscode thing but a food safety thing. Something something nothing ob your wrists so you can wash your hands something something. Even if your store is chill on dress code, you can get hit hard for food safety if you’re wearing it on the wrong day and an inspector notices.)

As far as I know watches are a QASA violation along with any kind of canvas or mesh shoes, which should be universal across corporate stores at least. How much anyone will notice or enforce it is up to your shift, SM, DM, and/or QASA inspector (especially after they changed how much stores focus on QASA scores).

I keep an $1 on my keychain - it's something I picked up at another job but it was really handy to have. The knives are sharp, so gotta be careful. Also, pretty sure Starbucks frowns on having non-safety box cutters in their stores (like the blue ones with the clear shield that retract when you push down). I also don't pay $6 each - more like $1 Canadian Peso, but don't have a good US source.

Other than that, nametag in my bag, Sharpie + pen in my pocket (would put my name on the Sharpie using a label maker and had a distinct pen - Muji. We were a label store so they only got used a few times per shift.), had my own timer from the store I'd keep in my bag since they'd grow legs and I was normally CS. Sometimes I had some disposable gloves in my bag for drains, bathrooms or ovens, but we did okay for those, generally speaking. And I guess a Starbucks hat - health code didn't require it, but I enjoyed it? And I got away with wearing my watch, removed it on my first day per the sub, but management said it was fine and no one ever said no (and never saw QASA).

I dunno if y’all are still required to mask in your locations but my mask brackets have been a lifesaver and I can’t go without them.

Do you mind linking the clip if you find it? I’m not sure what you’re referring to but I’m intrigued lol

Etsy you can find the sharpie clips

fans that you can wear on your neck since my store had such crappy versions that kept breaking

the clip is a cool novelty but it makes the sharpie easier to lose imo, assuming you’re attaching the mini ones to the clip
