Training hyper active barista (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Enough-Ad-368
Any tips on training new baristas on bar that have difficulty staying focused? The boy Im training is 16 and can’t stop talking. When he does, each time I explain things to him, it’s in one ear and out the other. I have a great level of patience but that only gets us so far.

In my experience with training baristas with ADHD, or new baristas that are just Hyper in general, making things more interactive helps.

I find that showing them once while explaining, having them practice, then once again while quizzing them to make it more like a game.

But then again, that's just in my experience with a few people. I hope this helps

doing things together has definitely helped me in the past— you both have a cup and make the same drink at the same time. definitely

As a green bean with adhd I can relate to your new trainee haha

What helped my trainer and I get through training is to have me do more of the talking. So like when reviewing drinks or register, let them try it out first or explain what they know. Just droning on and on about info will make their brain lose interest and tune you out.

Also maybe ask your green bean how they best learn? Like I know I need to repeat information back to make sure I have it right before moving on, I need to try it rather than see it (ex. trainer does it once, I do it next), and I can't just be lectured at (me trying register and exploring it myself rather than having my trainer just show me where it all is and telling me).

Wow! Thanks so much this was really helpful!

I do see him really losing interest when I talk too much but I wasn’t sure how else to really teach on the bar :/.

I’m sure this will work thank you!

I have adhd and a new green bean, luckily my trainer has adhd as well so it was easy for me to understand. Usually people with adhd learn better with hands on experience than verbal instructions. Our minds never shut up so majority of what we hear usually doesn’t process properly. Repeated hands on practice is the best way to train! Shadowing other workers helps too!

Make an impromptu checklist/objectives that you have to complete by date/time. So he can stay on track
