Fellow partners, what do you do with your tips?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PowerlineIOking
I’m curious what everyone does with their tips. Do you save it in a piggy bank? Or deposit it to your bank account? Just put it in your wallet?
I personally use most of mine to reload my Starbucks card. I think I can find a better use than this 😂
Sad-Passenger4532212 points2y ago
Tip money is drug money
the1noir13 points2y ago
This is the right answer.
bootrick11 points2y ago
Or bar money. Usually both.
Headkace9 points2y ago
Yeah im in Oregon so... dispensaries are cash based businesses 😬
Ashamed_Equal2 points2y ago
Lol, yes! Bar and weed money, lol
ObnoxiousR2 points2y ago
I wish I made better choices back in the day with my tip money
heathermj101 points2y ago
I literally went in to work the other day to get my tips so I could get a delivery 😂😂
existenaliens188 points2y ago
I actually use it to tip others. I tip drivers and when I do carry-out, tip the restaurant workers. A sort of tip recycling. Heheh.
mjcbitch3 points2y ago
I love this idea so much! oh my gosh, I'm gonna do the same thing.
NervosaNervous92 points2y ago
I save the cash and make deposits quarterly. I’m less likely to spend the cash than if I were to deposit the money every week.
crave_you34 points2y ago
Oooh this is a good idea. I get mine in envelopes and I have them just scattered all over my apartment atm 😐
TJW35116 points2y ago
I have to turn the envelope in so they don’t have to write my name on another one lol
madydt7 points2y ago
sounds like a fun scavenger hunt 😅
LeatherTurnip122456 points2y ago
I have a jar in my room that’s my “tips” jar and I put all of my tips from the week in that jar and just save them up. I barely use cash so it’s easy for me to not spend it lol
awesomechief98918 points2y ago
I have a box. I’m gonna turn it in today, but the last time I did I literally deposited $977 and 50% of it in singles 💀
LeatherTurnip122412 points2y ago
I laughed so hard at this, the wade of $1 bills I have collected is ridiculous. Idk if everyone has the same day for tips but we get ours every Tuesday and I kid you not was handed $40 in ALL singles 😪
Erbearlee4 points2y ago
Lol last time I did a count of my stash I had $400 in ones. The amount of ones I end up with is insane.
awesomechief9893 points2y ago
I finished up at the bank and did $1400 😅

This. Saved mine up to help buy an Oculus.
lilisredditaccount30 points2y ago
Thought this said octopus at first and I was concerned
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee22 points2y ago
I use it for tips and take out. My dad gives me Bill's for the quarters so he can use them at the laundromat and I bring the rest of the coins to the coin star in the supermarket and get gift cards.
deekutzi7 points2y ago
You can also take it to self checkout at Target and buy a gift card
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee2 points2y ago
This is very useful information for me, thank you!
GirlGangX35 points2y ago
Don’t they take a huge percentage? Or maybe I’m thinking of something else
Bokonon1010 points2y ago
Only if you get cash from your change. If you get gift cards there's usually no fee.
GirlGangX33 points2y ago
Nice!
the1noir2 points2y ago
This is good to know o:
Hoax_Pudding_Cup21 points2y ago
I put them into my little savings container. I always fold singles around the outer layer so I purposefully lose track of how much is in there so I'm less likely to spend it. Right now I'm saving up for my boyfriends late birthday present, (computers are expensive as hell), so it's there just building up.

gas money
CalDoesMaths16 points2y ago
Usually keep it as tips for anywhere else I go, kinda to tip with tips. But I also keep most of it in a jar as spare spending money. I usually consider my paycheck to be my “bills/essentials/savings” money for things like rent or groceries, and then my tips are my “me” money that I spend on things for me.
Gr8Bear8U16 points2y ago
Mmmmm, borger
Feisty_funsized12 points2y ago
I’m saving up for my adoption (of a child) hence the second job at Starbucks (they have an incredibly unexpected adoption reimbursement program) and all my tips go into a box I deposit periodically in my savings. Not exciting, but it’s something I’m working towards!
idonthinksoannie6 points2y ago
That's absolutely exciting! I used the unexpectedly generous fertility benefits last year. Best of luck to you!
Feisty_funsized4 points2y ago
Thank you thank you thank you! I’m honestly super stoked about it! 💕
maemac12 points2y ago
I put them in a spare purse/bag I have hanging in my room, saving for a rainy day. And if I’m going out to eat, I’ll grab some cash for tip, as I think everyone prefers cash tip!
VentiSARnoH2012 points2y ago
should put it in a high yield savings account and just let it accumulate interest. (interest is usually higher than your typical bank) but that’s just what I do 🤷♀️
cryingoverspiltmiIk5 points2y ago
Most banks with high yield savings accounts don’t have physical locations where you can deposit coins and bills though, right? Isn’t it typically the online only banks that offer those accounts?
VentiSARnoH202 points2y ago
you are correct. the reason the online banks can provide a higher interest rate is because they have no physical locations. they’re FDIC insured though. as always: do the research before doing anything lol.
Link47505 points2y ago
Edit: A reminder, don’t dump/invest/gamble any money you can’t afford to lose! Crypto is a risky game to play regardless of the platform!
I did this too until I found I could make like 7.5%-8.5% APY with an interest account with cryptocurrencies. I just choose something like USDC (Stable and won’t rapidly go up and down like Bitcoin) and it’s just nice to have to the side! Does require that extra step though.
sheep_heavenly5 points2y ago
This kind of reads like a grassroots overt ad. I'm not poo-pooing you, just the idea of investing in crypto as a (likely paycheck to paycheck) minimum wage worker.
Everyone reading should know that 7.5-8.5% is abnormally high to be sustainable. Cryptocurrency is also really not something someone who isn't financially literate should begin dabbling in blind.
USDC is a coin that is tied to the US dollar. One coin, one dollar. Any inflation in usable value comes from either the US dollar deflating or getting some kind of return. Despite being tied to the US dollar, its not usable in the same way and isn't protected the same way.
Basically, in a normal savings account that money is used to "secure" someone else's loan. You can withdraw it because there's millions of people all depositing, but the system doesn't work if we all withdraw. That's also why banks are FDIC insured. You can confidently know that even if your bank has a problem, there is a second agency that is guaranteeing you will get the money you put in back.
Coin based investment accounts do not work the same way. If you forget your traditional bank account password, nbd. There's ways to access the account with zero internet access from you. If you forget your wallet info, all of your investments are locked from you. Coin based investment accounts are not FDIC insured. If whatever investment platform you're using goes bankrupt or the company takes the money and runs, you're out that money. Full stop. The 8% apy comes from the platform invested on immediately lending out your money to someone seeking to borrow that coin/value. You're banking on whoever that is paying the platform back, otherwise it comes from other users depositing later. If neither happens, sucks to be you.
Even people who support cryptocurrency investments are shocked and wary of the rates being offered right now. When something is too good to be true, it often is.
I'm not saying "don't invest in crypto", I am saying that sketch investment schemes sound more appealing to people living largely paycheck to paycheck and wishing to not do that anymore. There's a significant risk behind that abnormally high return.
Link47501 points2y ago
Firstly, I apologize for sounding like an ad! Not my intention, I was just sharing what I do with my tip money/random pocket change. At least with Starbucks in the DC area, my base hourly salary is pretty good (I just work part time) and tips are on top, but I can see the points you are putting forward and do generally agree with you on many fronts. However, I would also like to respond to some things (while also admitting I am by no means an expert here)
It definitely should be clear to anyone, when it comes to anything crypto-related, that one’s self is fully responsible for keeping track of their assets, making sure you don’t get locked out, as well as needing to exercise caution when dealing with any platform let handle your money; as expected with the decentralized network that isn’t backed by the FDIC or similar organizations. Don’t dump all your money into it if you can’t afford to lose it, that is generally true for every choice you make in relation to money. Since this post was about tips, I made a very oversimplified comment and probably made myself sound “matter-of-fact” or plainly just left out a lot of necessary fine-print, to that I say I should have been more mindful.
I am aware of USDC being tied to USD (Similar to USDT and DAI, if I remember correctly), and the fact they aren’t backed by the FDIC might play in hand with why the APY rates would be so high in the first place; is it feasible to say all crypto interest accounts at this point aren’t backed by the FDIC, thus having varying, attractive APY rates is their only hand to compete with traditional savings accounts? (Not a /s, it’s an actual question! I’m curious) Also, to be clear, non-stablecoins (ETH, BTC, etc) are usually 2%-4%, which is still much higher than a bank’s saving account, but it isn’t the crazy 7%-8% across the board.
Overall, again, I agree with your points! I’m gonna edit my comment to add a disclaimer as not to lead anyone astray, and make it clear for everyone they should not dump all their money and savings to any non-insured platform. If anything, I do think dabbling is okay though. Like I stated, I toss a few tip dollars in over time, I am not risking my rent or food. Crypto is just interesting to me, and I get to learn about it and general finances outside my original field of study! (International Studies guy here w/ IT certifications) I assume all the risks that come with it, naturally. Thank you for poo-pooing my post, honestly. If there is anything I am missing, please point it out, I encourage it!

saddestgirl19957 points2y ago
When I drank it was bar money, now it's my laundromat money
Royal_Concentrate_006 points2y ago
I put my tips in a jar. It's a good to have a little savings. It feels good to see the cash accumulate. Makes me feel better about working there. Especially after a hard day.

When I worked in a store that allowed me to receive tips I used my weekly tips for my daughters lunches for the week. And milk and eggs and stuff. It helped me have a week to week cash fund to buy what I needed between paychecks.
Iloveheirloomveggies3 points2y ago
I got this notification as I was spending all of my saved tips on yarn
lizzuurdd3 points2y ago
i don’t spend cash often so i just kinda stash mine away in my closet 😂but i save them up for tattoos, going out with friends, tipping for delivery, etc. just kinda “extra” money that i don’t have to worry about coming out of my bank account!
MrsClaireUnderwood3 points2y ago
My tips get used for two things: buying edibles and tipping other service staff when I go out.
nightskydoxus3 points2y ago
hair dye
dead-ramone3 points2y ago
Right now I just deposit it into my bank account. But at previous jobs with tips, it all went into a big jar and I used that money for tattoos !
inkburd3 points2y ago
I’m keeping mine in a giant glass vase on top of my dresser until it fills up. Then I’ll go put it into savings, or sometimes I use the 1’s to give tips elsewhere :)
metrokid_982 points2y ago

hammerkat6052 points2y ago
I’ve been working for about 3 weeks and no one has mentioned me getting tips.
kitsustar172 points2y ago
Everybody here talking about a cash box or jar they keep theirs in while my lazy bum has stacks of cash just chilling on my kitchen counter because I haven’t bothered to go deposit it and it’s too much for my wallet.
Last time I waited until I had roughly $500 before I actually went to deposit it all.
lilkiosk2 points2y ago
Tips when I get pedicures or go to restaurants or something like that. My tips always end up becoming other people’s tips lmao

lilisredditaccount2 points2y ago
When I receive $1 bills I put those in my wallet for spending but a $5 bill or higher I put in my room as “emergency money” I like to have $500 cash at all times in there in case I want to do something on the fly and need cash immediately. Super helpful
bleachglommer2 points2y ago

mine go in a separate tips bank account that is ideally my “no touchy” savings account!! generally for bigger purchases or as an emergency fund. until they go to the bank they just live in a box in my room. no idea how much i have.
TheWallTheVeil2 points2y ago
I was putting mine in a jar and I had nearly 1000 saved up and ready to roll to bring to the bank. House got broken into and it got stolen. So I just started giving them to my son as weekly allowance (it was rare to get more than 30 bucks a week)
emilyidawson2 points2y ago
I put them in a mason jar so i can see all of the bills and once there is no more room AT ALL I pull it out recount my estimate put the lid back on and get a new jar. Once I hit a 4 digit number I deposit it and spend it on traveling!

sneaky_capybara1 points2y ago
when i first started working, i was originally going to just spend it (i was 16 so…) but my parents advised me to save up all my tips. obviously it was up to me, they weren’t going to force me to save it, but i did. they told me i can use it down the line to treat myself or save it up for a more important purchase. i won’t disclose how much i have saved up but i’ve been working for four years at the bux, i have a pretty good amount saved up and have yet to touch my tips!

Honestly since my last name starts with W I get all 1s so I usually just use it to tip DoorDash drivers in cash when I order bc I heard they like that better. Sometimes if I’m desperate it’s gas money.
I used to save it and one day I didn’t have enough for my share of rent and it came in so clutch bc I had saved hundreds of dollars at that point.
-zombie-squirrel1 points2y ago
I stick mine in one of three places in my apartment and currently need to deposit at least one of them. Plan on using 1/3 for bills and the other for rainy day fund / shiny impulse buys
heathermj101 points2y ago
my bf and I save all my tips in a big water jug for the next big thing we need to buy. the top is too small for me to get the money back out so it’s quite helpful hahaha
idkanothername4me1 points2y ago
I used to save them throughout the year for holiday gifts so I wouldn’t be caught off guard and then deposit the leftover $$ as a bonus from me to me 🤑
D735481 points2y ago
I used to save them for a few months. I started my tattoo sleeve using them lol. Lately its been hard to save them though.
keskobalt1 points2y ago
I take like a month to grab mine and then use it for gas. I live 5 mins away from work and only go to work so my gas usually needs refilling by then
Positivepatty601 points2y ago
I started keeping a tip envelope at the beginning of 2021. I have a sheet where I log the date I picked up my tips and how much money I got. I’m really not sure what I’m saving up for, but it’ll be really cool to see how much money I make in tips over the course of a year. I’d like to donate a good amount of it to charity
CaughtAS1 points2y ago
I mostly save them in my wallet, and have about $400 in there currently (which does make me quite nervous about losing my wallet/having it stolen) and I generally use it for small daily purchases. I run on caffeine, so a quick stop at the vending machine before work, and maybe something small to eat after work :) other than that I’m saving up as much as I can and plan on fun stuff for me like going to build-a-bear if they ever get more eevee evolutions or DLC for the game I play every day with my friends (it’s dead by daylight, and I love it as much as I love Minecraft)
ObnoxiousR1 points2y ago

Humble-Comparison1901 points2y ago
i try to use it for gas money predominately since gas stations near me charge less when u pay with cash but that’s been harder with mobile tips and not having as much cash. my shift saves it all for his honeymoon and my other shift saves it for a vacation he wants to take his girlfriend on for their anniversary.

I bought a TV with my tips, pay my share of the mortgage, and sometimes buy the high priced stuff on Google play

I buy way too many cups but tell myself it's okay because they will make good Christmas gifts
ittybittybakerkitty1 points2y ago
I stash mine in a jar and when it gets too full I deposit and start over again. My partner often raids my tips to supply this retail store with ones when he can't do a change order so I end up with larger bills in my jar. The record is about $150 in ones alone.
coldbrewsmellsoffeet1 points2y ago

JustAnotherRyan51 points2y ago
I keep mine in cash but I get it changed into larger bills ($100s and $50s) because I’m less likely to break them. I then keep them stashed as a sort of “secret” savings account that isn’t in my bank account so I can spend it on something fun when I save enough. Just bought an Apple Watch with my tip money!!

Gas money!!
ohamilkshake1 points2y ago
i usually use mine for gas, pet supplies, fast food, or save it to go to my dispensary since they're cash only. one of my coworkers saved his up slot and only uses it for the dispensary and another one of my coworkers has saved hers up completely and i think she said she has around $500 saved in tips. i usually use mine as fun money and try to use my paychecks for bills and put the left over in my savings account
i-amthebreadman1 points2y ago

When I was working jobs that gave a LOT of tips all the time -- delivering pizzas and sandwiches and serving tables -- I got a cash box so I could keep it all in one place. I keep important documents in there too so I know where to look. It's got a lock on it so it's a little safer, or you could go fireproof safe with a sturdy lock.
I throw everything into the bottom and count it up every once in a while. I find it easier to paperclip 1s into bundles of 25 to keep them more organized. I also made a simple spreadsheet that multiplies bills by their denomination and adds it all up automatically so I just have to count how many 1s, 5s, 10s, 20s and punch it in without having to do a bunch of math to get the total. I tend to make a mistake somewhere trying to keep a running total.
Of course it's really important to put in the right numbers. I put the wrong numbers in once and thought I had $1200 when it was more like $400.
It all gets deposited into my savings. I'll dip into it for big purchases once in a while.
King_Spamula1 points2y ago
I only buy things with cash instead of my debit card, so I only spend as much as I have in cash. It works out well, and I usually build up a ton of money in my cash box at home pretty quickly.
jbra131 points2y ago
I had a shoebox full of cash that I’d deposit once I couldn’t lift it anymore 😂
soffybuttons1 points2y ago
i asked the person who counts our tips to give me more $5s than bigger bills, so usually every week i end up with about 15 singles and some 5s. all the 5s get folded up and shoved into a piggy bank! (i have this thing where every $5 i come into contact with i save) and the singles go into my gas tank
CriticalSheep1 points2y ago
I would keep mine in a box on a shelf in my office and when I had a big purchase I wanted to make, I made sure I had the cash in my box and then deposited it into my savings account for use. The pandemic made it really easy to hold the cash for a while because I wasn't spending paper money.

It really depends, if I have them on me I use them for anything that needs change and all that. Sometimes I save it until it builds up then I use it. I don't get that much so It takes a while for it to accumulate xD

fill my wallet up with the ones until it’s full and deposit the rest into my credit. I never pay in cash and only use the ones to tip :)
