got fired because i missed 3 days in two months? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blurredspace
so i was a part timer and only started in may. in those two 1/2 months i only called out three times- twice for vomiting in the morning and once bc of covid-vaccine symptoms. otherwise everyone told me my performance had been good! i was getting along well with everyone, knew all the drinks after a few weeks, i closed just two nights ago with my then-trainer and she complimented me on how well ive been doing? but my manager said in her text that she decided against me due to performance reasons AND bc i had ‘let alone been sick 3times in two months’? i honest to god believe it was because i asked for two weeks off to drive down to my grandpa and once to go to my brothers graduation! both times i asked ahead at least two weeks. i did all my hours, never been late, always said yes to everything so i really dont know what i did wrong..? anyone able to tell me how to improve in the future?

I would call Human Resources! File a complaint— last time I checked this is your right to speak to someone above her! Don’t let this slide if you honestly feel like this was wrong on them for firing you. Good luck and give us an update!

i asked my other shift leader to give me an update and if my performance rly was that poor- i get being sick in the future too much (i had a wisdom teeth operation in the coming moths) is not optimal but i had told her about it before. is asking for time off is not normal in the first few months..? other than that, i think i might just look for a job elsewhere, now that ik how to steam milk correctly- i was getting along well with the coworkers, but after asking for time off my manager had been icy to me.. overall, i had only worked two half shifts with her so... idk how she was even able to rate my performance?

I literally took two weeks off like a week after I started and I have been working at my store for a year. I have called out twice the entire time I’ve worked here, but both times everyone I was working with knew I wasn’t coming in because one was a day I had requested off and was given off but due to a temporary shift in management there was confusion in scheduling. I also am currently on leave but was scheduled for 3 shifts during my leave and didn’t show up for them and still have my job. So I would firmly say that you weren’t being fairly judged by your SM and you should definitely seek out some help from higher up.

It should be completely and totally fine to call out when you are sick and ask for time off when needed, especially in a flexible schedule job like this. Unfortunately the reality is that it does end being held against you if you request time off in your first few months, especially when it's not an emergency situation.

The employment world can be so super toxic. I'm sorry you are having this experience. I hope you find someplace that is more understanding but just to be safe I'd be mindful in the future about budgeting those time off requests as a new employee.

(Just to be clear I'm not saying this is your fault at all, just acknowledging the unfortunate reality)

the thing is, i asked for time off to visit my grandpa, who has Alzheimer’s. i wrote in the request it was a family matter, but didn’t specify since its not required to go into details, but i guess i shouldve specified. the other time was my little brothers hs graduation, even then my dad said ‘if they say no, just quit.’ each time after i called out, i texted her asking to make up the shifts the following days and she always said not to worry so this was rly out of the blue.. still, ill keep your advice in mind, ik it was bad but didnt think i was this bad- im not going to lay my life down for a company but thats what they expect of u while paying u 11 bucks an hour ://

Yeah, you're completely in the right here. It is ridiculous that this is normal, and you absolutely should feel no pressure at all to disclose why you need time off, it is nobody's business but yours. And your dad is right, this job is not at all worth missing either of those things.

There’s a new training video ENCOURAGING us to not work when we are sick. So if they’re letting you go based on not working while sick then that’s something I would bring to someone above them. With how short staffed most places are I can’t imagine any reasonable manager firing someone over such a small thing. I’ve had two partners no call no show more than 5 times in the past two months and they’re still here.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of managers that shouldn't be managers. I would talk to HR.

I would just show up and get everyone ells sick. Makes sure the learn people who are sick should stay home, or the whole store gets sick. Then call goverment food guys and let them know you bring allowed to work while vomiting.

I think the 1st 90 days are a probation period and you can be let go for any reason. At least that's how it used to be.

Kind of stupid it’s being held against you for calling out due to vaccine side effects - there’s a whole thing in place that you can get paid time off up to (3) days after your dose since so many people experience negative side effects

Call Human Resources and possibly reference the Anti Retaliation policy. You shouldn’t be working when you’re sick, and also the Covid coach says if you have vaccine symptoms you don’t have to work. Also it doesn’t seem like you have had any write ups so there isn’t a documented reason to fire you. You’ve got nothing to improve you handled everything right !
Edit: forgot to say if you have any questions feel free to PM me, I know the policies pretty well

Not that I think it’s right, but typically when I’m “new” I noticed that bosses do not like new people requesting time off, calling out, etc. so when I’m new I’ve been able to put stuff to the side until I gain the trust of my boss

Again I think this is shitty and life isn’t on pause cuz you have a new job but that’s what I’ve noticed

i really just wished she had communicated that with me. i was lying in bed, had an 8.5 hr shift scheduled for tmr and fri- randomly get a message from her saying ‚we‘re sending your final paycheck to ur address, we‘ve decided against you due to poor performance and since you called out 3 times in 2.5 months’ so it was very out of the blue. i had gotten nothing but positive feedback, the only negative being from one stressy SM who said i need to get faster on the cold bar but my coworkers told me its fine.. im a little hurt that she wouldn’t even give me the chance to correct myself

I could be wrong I think Starbucks has a 90 day rule where they can term you on the spot before 90 days, after that they have to let you rectify yourself. I haven’t worked at Starbucks in a while so I don’t remember exactly but that could be why
