Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Venti rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by space_bunz3
I’m so frustrated with the state of staffing in my store….we get slammed on weekends with people ordering for their entire family & only run with FIVE PEOPLE (that’s IF no one calls in). With the right five this would be doable but my manager keeps scheduling me with two of our partners who can’t seem to get being a barista down (super sweet guys but they are “just okay” in every position if that makes sense) or a new guy, and one or two strong(er) partners. Well today we have three people who can’t bar, can’t dto, and can’t keep up with oven on THE busiest day of the week….AND my manager was thirty minutes late putting me behind. It’s also CLEAN PLAY so ive been here since 4:30 and haven’t stopped running until now (my oh so early lunch because if I don’t take it now I won’t get one). I’m just so tired of people not being trained well (if at all) & management telling me to “suck it up because I get shift pay” I DONT MAKE ENOUGH FOR THIS DUDE??? ONLY YOU DO. Rant over. I’m just a 213 burnt to the ground at this point🥲

Wish me luck having to put the poor new guy on mobiles & cafe🙃

Edited to add: new guy kinda crushed it?!?! I had to move him to drive thru bar because the store that makes $50,000+ a week down the road shut their mobiles off because they were short staffed too🥲

You guys do clean play on Saturdays? That seems like the worst day of the week to do that.
sailorgrumpycat 17 points 1y ago
Exactly, you do that clean play stuff Tuesday or Wednesday so that you can actually do some of it during the day without being in the way during your busiest day. This also allows for some of it to be done on the days before the actual clean play.
sheep_heavenly 5 points 1y ago
Different person, we used to do it on Sundays but that's the absolute worst day of the week between public transit and local events... But nobody wants to stay until 11pm to do it on a weekday.

We ended up just splitting the tasks throughout the week and reserving clean play for the actual majorly disruptive tasks like Nitro. Most of the rest can reasonably done while open if you dedicate someone to doing it... Like how we used to 🤦
dthomp0806 1 points 1y ago
Ours was Tuesdays but then switched to Sundays cuz we close an hour earlier. I think that's a terrible day, there's always call offs on the weekend. Plus it's busy as hell and who wants to stay and clean after a shitty day?
bryceofswadia 1 points 1y ago
Our store does it Tuesdays.
space_bunz3 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I think it’s that way because we open later that morning?? Night crew literally has a call in daily so I don’t think he trusts it??? Today was my sixth clean play in a row I think?? I’m kind of mad about it but I do enjoy getting to deep clean & teach the new people how to open & clean correctly🤣

I see it like this… Starbucks is paying for $10/hr labor, so give them $10/hr labor! Which means doing LESS than the McDonalds workers across the street do, cus McDonald’s is paying for $15/hr labor! Don’t work like Starbucks is paying for top of the line labor, cus they’re not! This is a “you get what you pay for” world and they’re not paying you to bust your ass all day! Serve the customers when you can, take ALL of your breaks even if you think the ship is sinking. Take it easy friend
space_bunz3 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
The take all of your breaks hit me hard because I rarely take tens🥲 we work in a very…..entitled part of town so everyone is just rude to us if it takes even 5 minutes to make a drink especially on weekends…literally had a woman yell at me for repeating back “tall hot chai tea latte” instead of her “tall chai Frappuccino HOT” & then swear she’d been at the window “7 minutes for one drink” when it was 2🙃🙃

Also I leave for Puerto Rico in like 3 days🙌🏻🙌🏻 blocking everyone’s number from work🤣
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I think he’s burnt out too. Our DM comes in all the time to tell us our store is dirty (we have a horrible fly problem but she won’t let us take any steps to fix it besides the pest control) & tells me to do extra things when running with 3-4 people so I can only imagine what he gets told 😅
susp1cious_papaya 3 points 1y ago
Our store manager always tries to look out for us and deliberately overstaff during the holiday season and on saturdays, especially now that school has started, but we have a new dm that will no longer allow that. Today at work it was nonstop and cold bar felt like a war zone. We had one person call out sick so there were only 4 of us on the floor and we were struggling so hard 🥲
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
We have two school districts within five minutes of us so i feel this…but we get hit with families on Saturday & sundays & they KILL us. I usually have to be on bar and I’m always like 🙂🙂🙂 this is fine 🙂🙂🙂 my manager just sees the numbers & is like “we weren’t that busy” & I’m internally screaming “check the HALF HOUR $$$$ TOTALS NOT THE TRANSACTIONS!!” Like we can’t really move 60+ people out in a half hour of every car is getting 4+ drinks & all the food😅
susp1cious_papaya 1 points 1y ago
Honestly!! I’m sick of these $40+ orders
space_bunz3 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I love being treated like catering🤣

Don't burn yourself out for the corporation. Do what you can do.
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I’m sadly a perfectionist/people pleaser who wants to move up so I always try to pick up the slack (and there is a LOT). I’ve mostly become numb.
ThinkPan 1 points 1y ago
If you stop doing the work of three people then they have to staff two more people
space_bunz3 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Theoretically yes but my manager isn’t going to hire anyone…he thinks 4 SSV’s (don’t ask why there are four of us) & 3 baristas for mornings is alllll we need
ThinkPan 2 points 1y ago
Doing a Queen's work on a Pawn's pay. Hope it turns up for you.

Both of them fought to keep me maybe two months ago. We have too many shifts at my store & I was over the attitudes/call ins so i was gonna quit to work somewhere else & as soon as my notice went to my SM my DM was in the store talking to me about why I was leaving & went to her boss to figure out a way to make me stay👀
Actually had a visitor dm come in & watch me run my shift on a crazy busy day & tell both my SM & DM that I was going to be a great manager & he’d take me to his district if he could😅 right now the fight seems worth it…for now
katsandboobs 3 points 1y ago
Feel ya real hard. I think it’s a company wide issue. My friend works 1000 miles away from me and is having THE SAME PROBLEM. Um hello upper management, if you’re reading this, send reinforcements!! We want to love our job!!
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I’ve been around since 2015 and it’s just so different now. I have never ran peak at ANY store with less than 6-7 and that’s pushing it. But here it’s 4-5 every day and poor oven is always slammed while also on customer support AND front….it’s bad🤣
lobosloboslobos 2 points 1y ago
Do you work at my store? holy shit

I have a partner that I put on bar for maybe 2 hours during his entire shift yesterday. I barred from 7 till 11 & then 1-2. He complained to my manager that I had him on bar all day🥲🥲 he’s also an SSV so I was pretty cheesed he tried to throw a fit over a small stint on bar.

I WISH I could be front again…front at my store is also oven and cs even during peak🥲 I still prefer it over drive thru though 🤣
ThinkPan 1 points 1y ago
>cant dto

At my store, DTO is where you go if you're slow on bar. Who can't do the only thing we let new people do?
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
The new guy is trying but he can’t find the buttons quick enough & then the others just can’t remember what people JUST said to them/ask extra questions that make everyone confused😅 I.e. “can I get an iced caramel macchiato with extra drizzle” “sure would you like to use any alternative milks or add any syrups?” NO IF THEY DONT SAY IT DONT MAKE THEM CONFUSED
ThinkPan 2 points 1y ago
damn I feel that actually. If I ever miss some rare button, I'll do it as an ask me and the bar person might show the right way after. I'm lucky to have experienced people working.
space_bunz3 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yes!! This is what I try to do for the newbies too, especially the stupid salted foam button. Our newbies usually get shoved to DTR or oven & they live there for months. It’s annoying but our manager wants fast times for peak so we get stuck in a cycle ):

Ovens as a green bean are hell

just let me wear gloves dammit, I'm mangling these pastries with the tongs
