When Karen tries to get a $5 drink for $0.50(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by metrokid_98
The other day I was on DTO and this lady tried to order a Trenta Dragonfruit Lemonade and a “venti water with strawberry açaí base.” Yup. So I politely asked her if she meant she wanted the strawberry refresher with no inclusions…. She said “uhhh no” and repeated her order, and when I explained that what she is describing is how we make the strawberry refresher, she pulled the “I’ve gotten it made this way before” crap. My store has this saying, “it’s just coffee,” meaning we’ll do whatever crazy requests people ask, but I feel like there are limits. So I charged her for a refresher and when she got to the window and realized that she had a fit and didn’t want it anymore. Like I know Starbucks can be overpriced, but I’m sorry I’m not gonna help a Karen cheat the system.

My store makes things like that custom teas, since it's water and stuff which is tea. Like the people who want a water with matcha.
Animuthrowawayplz77 points1y ago
Yeah we do this if they ask for water with the dried strawberries as well. Or water with a little bit of lemonade was another one.
reclusivegiraffe29 points1y ago
we do that when people get water with fruit inclusions

You charge as custom tea
Sarahthelizard22 points1y ago
Yep, that's the official guidance.
astivana17 points1y ago
Uh it sounds like she wanted literally a strawberry açaí (with no inclusions), not a water with strawberry inclusions.
[deleted]16 points1y ago
Nah fam. Weekly update months ago changed that to a custom iced tea

I had a really nice guy try to order what sounded like a latte as an espresso with light ice, extra milk and foam. I told him it wouldn't be full, he said he always orders it this way and it's always full.
HOWEVER
He was NICE about it. He offered to pay for the latte even though he was confused. So I charged him for what he asked for (while clarifying that he shouldn't expect the same next time) and we filled the cup.
If you are nice to me, I dont care. But if you treat me like shit, why would you then expect me to go out of my way to accommodate you?
metrokid_98 [OP]58 points1y ago
Exactly! People order shots of espresso over ice all the time and they add all sorts of stuff to make faux-lattes. They’re always nice about it though and they know what they’re getting, plus once they add a bunch of milk and syrups and cold foam it’s like a dollar cheaper so not much of a loss.
cyan_reynolds29 points1y ago
That said, even if they're nice about it there's a limit. We have someone who has been coming in recently ordering a BSSE with no ice, extra oatmilk. She's always nice, not a Karen, but when she gets to the window she complains that it's not filled. We've explained to her how she needs to order it several times (including the initial time) and after the 5th day in a row I've had enough. I literally will not fix it for her again, I'm just going to tell her she can pull around and reorder if she wants a different drink.

We have the opposite problem with this one lady. She always orders a venti iced latte but fails to tell us that she barely wants ANY milk in her latte and she’s always pissed that it’s “too light”. I’ve told her to just order 3 shots over ice with a splash of milk but she refuses.
bryceofswadia13 points1y ago
This. I always try to ring things up for people in a cheap way if they are nice. Like, someone ordered 4 tall caramel frappes but they were super nice so I rang it up as two ventis and had them split in two cups because it’s the exact same amount of product but $4 cheaper.
givemeapples28 points1y ago
My favorite money saving trick I do for customers is when people order an iced grande/venti chai add 2/3 shots! I tell them I'm going to ring them up as a latte and just add chai and end up saving them $3! They love that
joyconboy3378146 points1y ago
they know too much

i had this girl ask for an iced triple espresso with oatmilk and brown sugar. got to the window, she wanted light ice with extra oatmilk instead so we remake it. then she wants it with oatmilk filled up to the top, i tell her that that's a latte and i can't do that for her and she insists that i do it for her bc it's for her sisters wedding. we ended up remaking her drink three times just for her to get a refund and charge her for a latte but at the end, she just ends up using her stars for the free drink!! WHY DIDNT YOU JUST USE THE FREE REWARD IN THE FIRST PLACE INSTEAD OF WASTING OUR TIMEE😭😭
ourgodwhofucks24 points1y ago
her sisters wedding ??? not even her own ?? LMFAO
sidneyistrash37 points1y ago
YEAH she was like "im getting this for my sister it's her wedding day". my first thought was, why are you being cheap for your sisters wedding then LOL
allmailtothethief1 points1y ago
5$ is literally so inexpensive considering it's for a fucking WEDDING
juiceyluicy38 points1y ago
If people order anything added to water it’s supposed to be charged as a custom iced tea with the modifications they want. So that iced water with scoops of inclusions that was popular maybe last summer was supposed to be rung in as a custom iced tea with a scoop of every inclusion. There was a weekly update about it almost a year ago if I remember right. It’s always rude ass people who try and “cheat the system” I’m not going to break rules for rude customers.
maemac14 points1y ago
And I hate the managers that overlook that like hello it’s POLICY
G37_is_numberletter4 points1y ago
Yeah and it’s your labor that your manager and the customers are cutting corners on.

Someone ordered a dirty iced chai at my store today but they didn’t want any milk, just water (he wanted the concentrate, not the bags). Should tat have been a custom tea?? I rang it up as an iced chai because I had no idea how else to ring it in—nobody has ever ordered that 😭 Or maybe an iced americano, add chai?? Genuinely asking because I’ve been thinking about this all day and I’m losing my mind
juiceyluicy9 points1y ago
I probably would’ve done an iced americano. But like in the moment idk if my mind would’ve processed it fast enough and I might have done an iced chai with an ask me.
lunarena113 points1y ago
I think I would have rang it up as an Americano, add chai. Depending on size and how many shots. Like just 1 shot? Probably would have charged as a tall Americano 1 shot, add chai, what ever size cup he wants and extra ice/water.

If someone can't afford Starbucks, that's fine, they shouldn't get Starbucks. I hate these customers because they make our job harder, not because I care about to the $ the siren is making
I have this old hag who tries to get a "double shot of espresso with steamed heavy cream to the top" and throws a fit EVERY time if we charge her for a HWC latte. She called me stupid and made me so angry I had to go home that day lmao
metrokid_98 [OP]17 points1y ago
Omg she sounds awful I’m so sorry!
Tbh i have a suspicion that a lot of these people who try and get these cheap versions of menu items can afford the real thing. At least at my location, a lot of them are doctors and nurses and finance pros and they have luxury cars. I could be wrong but it feels a privilege thing, like they deserve nice things because they have money but they don’t think they should have to pay for it.
Swan9724 points1y ago
If a customer ordered it that way I would give them just a splash if the strawberry base. Like barely enough to change the color
marek_intan18 points1y ago
You can get two drops of Strawberry Acai. The rest is water.
BatWeary3 points1y ago
4oz of SA and that’s it!

Had a customer come in today to order a quad shot, 3 pumps white mocha in a venti cup with light ice. He showed me a picture of a latte with this sticker on it. When I explained that was a latte, and that an espresso would come with a maximum of 4 ounces of milk, and almost empty cup, he said fine just ring him for the latte....then when I told him it was 6.25 he wanted to think about it lol. He ended up ordering his original drink with "regular " ice. I explained that it will still only come with 4 ounces and he said ok. I put 2 scoops of ice and probably closer to 1 cup of cream and I could tell he wanted to say something, but didn't. I'm still laughing about how he was like " why is it so much more?" Well sir, you suddenly want more than a pint of half and half with your espresso 🤷♀️
XMyshelX7 points1y ago
Alright here’s your water filled all the way up with the tiniest splash of strawberry…. But for real … custom tea my go to now days …. Water with strawberryinclusions=custom tea …. Had a lady mad she ordered coffee with a side of strawberry inclusions (she gives them to her kid) …. She was upset about paying the 50 cents and I only gave her 3 scoops ( let her know that was one more scoop than comes in a trenta drink)
AdIll79466 points1y ago
Some lady literately said to my barista the other day, “I want a strawberry açaí with lemonade, but put it in as a regular strawberry açaí and add lemonade because it’s cheaper that way.” The barista was SO confused. I stepped in and asked if she wanted water in the drink and she said no, just lemonade. I explained to her that we would then have to charge her for the strawberry açaí lemonade. She said “but that’s more expensive” and I said yes, it is more expensive because you’re paying for the drink you’re actually getting. She drove away.
LZARDKING6 points1y ago
Yeah that’s not allowed. We can’t add modifiers to anything and if she *insists* it’s not a refresher you charge her as a custom iced tea
resentnothing5 points1y ago
bruh someone did this to me the other day for a water with inclusions and then asked for my name to call corporate about it because another store didn't follow the policy i explained to her. they're the worst.
Asleep-Plantain5 points1y ago
Anytime i try be cheap about anything, not just exclusively at starbucks, i make sure to a. Be fucking nice and b. Tip extra nice to whoever is hooking me up. U catch more bees with honey than vinegar
darkwolf5234 points1y ago
A venti water with strawberry acai and no fruits is a strawberry refresher… *visible confusion* ado I would have done the same tbh.
46patisse4 points1y ago
You are a hero
elrobolobo4 points1y ago
My store's unofficial rule is we'll give them up to two ounces without charging for most things. Just some real watered down strawberry grape juice
kat8332 points1y ago
Just so you know you can get fired for giving her it the way she wanted
goldqueen2871 points1y ago
Fr? But we’re always hearing of being reprimanded for NOT listening to customers??
keskobalt1 points1y ago
I would’ve put a literal splash of acai like cream in coffee
