During the pandemic Starbucks was one of the only fast food chains (that's what we are, don't lie to yourself: DT times, sugary everything, generally very young entry level staff, high turnover rate) to expand their menu while other places reduced theirs, much to the chagrin of baristas. I see these shortages as sort of a karma rebalancing of our supply chain reducing our menu to a more appropriate size.
SovietRaptor82 points1y ago
Starbucks is operating on such tight margins to really milk every last cent out of the supply chain that literally any imbalance can have cascading effects. It’s not gonna effect shareholders though, they’ll just cut labor to make up for it.
philosopher_cat_lady15 points1y ago
I see them doing it right now! My manager's been scheduling us for noncoverage when we're really working coverage, and we're not scheduled to clock in fifteen minutes before peak anymore. And some baristas are scheduled to clock in in the middle of peak. Peak is shortstaffed right now.
mabbean [OP]55 points1y ago
i agree. them expanding the menu was the problem in the first place and now with the shortages we have to deal with angry people bc we’re out of a majority of the things they want
sailorgrumpycat24 points1y ago
They would have been just as angry if we had shortened our menu, so i think these shortages balance it out, it's just a different kind of anger.
philosopher_cat_lady6 points1y ago
Instead of being angry, these people should be happy they didn't die from COVID. I just don't understand how horrible people are
MatchingColors23 points1y ago
Today I learned what chagrin means
philosopher_cat_lady3 points1y ago
Exactly! This is NOT sad. I wholeheartedly disagree with OP's title
sailorgrumpycat6 points1y ago
I don't think they meant sad as in like we should feel remorse or pity, but more sad in how pathetic it is that the inventory and supply chain for the worlds largest coffee company is crippling us.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
I guess? It just seems inane to me. The real sad thing is the 600,000 dead Americans
sailorgrumpycat3 points1y ago
Well, everything that Starbucks does at any time is inane and petty when compared to that, but in the scope of daily life you can't really focus on the death toll all the time otherwise working anywhere but a hospital, morgue, or the CDC seems pretty pointless.
JHOOOOBI2 points1y ago
This is EXACTLY what I think. They really went for it instead of cutting back and this is part of the fallout.
asdfcindy293 points1y ago
Think of it as pre-frappuccino days. I remember my boss telling me there were only 6 drinks when he was working at Starbucks.
mabbean [OP]51 points1y ago
that’s wild! i’ve only been working at the bux for a few years now, but some of the older partners at my store joke about how we’re pretty much going back to the og starbucks days lol
MVLWVRE42 points1y ago
god i wish we could get rid of fraps
hoewenn14 points1y ago
I love fraps but I wish there was like, a limit per customer/order. Because one person getting 8 fraps during peak is just unfair to the baristas AND the customers who order after and have to wait twenty minutes for a simple latte cause Samantha over here needed to try ever frap we have to offer.
Koalastars00964 points1y ago
Whenever someone ask why we don’t have something I say “they ate it all!” It helps to point to the very long line of people and screaming children behind them. Some people get a good laugh out of it
mabbean [OP]24 points1y ago
i mean, you’re not wrong lol. i love it
Koalastars0096 points1y ago
3 syrups only is goals!
sandwitch01820 points1y ago
I'm from Canada and also haven't worked for the company since October so I'm a little out of the loop. Why have you guys been having such an issue with keeping things stocked? Has head office given any explanation or is it just "warehouse shortages?" I can't imagine how stressful it must be!
nicathor20 points1y ago
They haven't specifically told us, but it's been said that most production was actually disrupted when the pandemic began and we were eating away at the stockpiles which finally ran dry a few months ago. That, and the actual delivery companies lost a lot of drivers to Covid (lost, and *lost*)
mabbean [OP]20 points1y ago
not 100% sure, but it’s either bc the warehouses can’t get the supplies or they’re like, building up products bc we kept selling out too quickly and they can’t keep up with the production
SpinachLegal19 points1y ago
it’s crazy, i can’t believe you guys are even out of peppermint too 😭
mabbean [OP]16 points1y ago
yeah, we’ve been out for a couple weeks now. v sad
hoewenn4 points1y ago
We’re out of peppermint too. RIGHT when I wanted to try a drink with a pump of peppermint too :(
LZARDKING10 points1y ago
Party like it’s 1975
philosopher_cat_lady9 points1y ago
This is exactly what I thought Starbucks should look like when the pandemic started. We \*should\* have a limited menu. We \*should\* be encouraging customers not to come to Starbucks until the pandemic is over. We do not need anything more than classic, vanilla, caramel, and mocha.
bizyguy766 points1y ago
So will customers go to no syrup before hitting the sugar free syrups? Though I can see the disgust in someone’s face in just mentioning it
Roseyy-Girl1 points1y ago
You'd be surprised, where I live most of the customers actually take the sugar free syrups before letting go of the syrups in general. They'll just generally add a different sweetener.
darkwolf5235 points1y ago
F
impasse6024 points1y ago
Damn 3?? I mean we just ran out of caramel syrup but we at least still have peppermint, brown sugar, vanilla and sf vanilla. But on another note i bet it makes making lattes easier right!?
UBonFeet4 points1y ago
From what I was told was that a lot of the delivery guys didn’t really want to work anymore, I’m not sure how true that is but I have noticed every time we get a delivery we get a different guy every time.
Sambam12131 points1y ago
This is true! Some of our stores emergency orders have been dropped off by Fedx or UPS and our RP orders have been 1-2 days late. We’re also only able to order “essential” products lol
my_name_is_in_use1233 points1y ago
Daaaaannnggg that’s like our literal bare minimum 👀
RinnTheOtter3 points1y ago
At what point do we just close the stores down?
hoewenn1 points1y ago
When we run out of coffee 😬
jadedgoldfish1 points1y ago
The location nearest me was out of espresso, cold brew, refreshers and cartridges for whipped cream and was still open with just regular hot and iced coffee and tea and creme frapps
RinnTheOtter1 points1y ago
Nah, they’ll just have us go buy Folgers or Maxwell house
Catfoodisyummy2 points1y ago
Canadian partner here. We get shorted like 1 - 2 things at a time i feel so bad for american partners. Like i knew it was worse there but not on this level worse. Customers get mad and act like I personally attacked them when I say we're still out of sriracha I cant imagine how they act when they find out they only have 3 syrup options.
kaileelaine2 points1y ago
idk why but the shortage has made me want to put like 6 vanilla on the stand
sanguine-eyes1 points1y ago
Is this a supply chain issue or what is the main reason this is happening? I mean COVID is still a thing but honestly hadn’t regularly been going to the bux and then got confused why it seemed like stuff was out- to which I don’t bother to harass the barista that has already had 10,000 customers yell at them lol
Voxxyvoo1 points1y ago
this is the opposite of sad. thank fucking god we're going back to basic coffee
StarbucksMommy1 points1y ago
Soon they are going to start limiting the amount of pumps people can add in their drinks.
c8ham1 points1y ago
Wait I’m sorry I only work weekends, so I’m always oblivious. Why all the shortages??
sofso1 points1y ago
y'all got classic still??
Paverunner1 points1y ago
Why is there a syrup shortage?
jayessdubs6 points1y ago
Bc production isn't keeping up w demand :/
Paverunner1 points1y ago
Oh holy cow. That sucks
babbyalien3 points1y ago
why do you think
Paverunner0 points1y ago
I didn’t actually know, (as I haven’t worked at Starbucks in several years) that’s why I asked. Thanks for the update.
Sambam12132 points1y ago
There’s an everything shortage lol half of our food items have been on back order for weeks. We couldn’t even order toilet seat covers. A lot of the items were just getting zeroed out when we placed our orders.
Paverunner2 points1y ago
Jesus! That’s awful. And then the customers take it out on you guys…
Intelligent_Result_8-24 points1y ago
Really a shortage or is company just trying to save money? Everywhere you go there’s a shortage. Come on Starbucks, make something happen to solve this situation.
bbleinbach9 points1y ago
You said it yourself, everywhere has a shortage…
CoffeeChesirecat4 points1y ago
Ummm the supply chain is a mess everywhere from Starbucks to Taco Bell to grocery stores. I've heard it'll get worse before it gets better.
