Ran out of cold brew in the middle of beverage line cleaning. I present to you the Nitro Iced Water (reddit.com)

Any chance all stores do this on the same day? Had a nitro today that tasted like nitro + a cleaning product 🤢

Mistakes happen, so no big deal! But was curious because of your post!

Yeah, the cleaning powder we use has a very strong, distinct bleach smell to it. But each day there’s a specific station we’re supposed to focus on for cleaning and there’s seven of them, so depending on how each store schedules the cleanings it’ll fall on the same day of each week. Like at ours, espresso and hot drinks are Monday; cold beverages, nitro, and cold brew every Tuesday; and Sundays are for catching up on whatever we missed. Now with our specific nitro tap, it automatically schedules the cleanings it needs and they may or may not align with our cleaning schedule and for this specific one we have to complete it within an hour of it popping up

A well cleaned station should be tested by the baristas to make sure this doesn't happen to customers but unfortunately will if they are pressed for time or multi-tasking. It's easy to for get small things but quality and safety is top priority.

At my store we usually only have 3 people working at a time and a pretty constant flow of customers so multitasking is definitely a factor. Best case scenario is only one person will be tasked with cleaning the taps, but others will tap in and continue/finish off the cleaning. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had to clean pools of cold brew or restart beverage line cleaning because one itty bitty part was left off (in most cases a little cap with a mesh filter that the cold brew passes through along the line).

This is a busier store that I go to somewhat regularly (nitro addict). Unfortunately they lost a lot of the regular staff that I recognized, and now have a hiring signs up everywhere.

It was probably something like what you described. I tried tossing the lid and then swapped it into a different cup, but couldn’t get the taste out.

Thanks for sharing some insight into how sbux is (typically) so consistent!

I have to agree with Sparkflyr when he says we can’t let details like this fly under the radar and we honestly do appreciate it when customers come up and tell us “hey something’s a little off” because (usually) we’ll know what went wrong haha!

Hope your next nitro doesn’t reek of cleaning chemicals!!

Yep all stores should clean their cold brew/nitro cold brew lines and tanks

Edit: sorry I misread. Most clean days in my area at least are done on Wednesdays after close..
