Emergency Contact concern (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mercury-light
Hi fellow partners—

My manager blew up my phone about 10 times today because i didn’t show up to my opening shift. However, i am always on time and have never missed like this. I told her sorry and said i didn’t realize she changed my days off. (Since i always work the same shift and have the same days off).

She called in another shift, who works nearby the store to open while i woke up and showed up so they had a opening shift.

I was extremely upset because she contacted my emergency contact which was my mother and told her i didn’t show up to work. I have been a partner for 4 years and i have never experienced this with any manager. Is this ok for them to do?? I was upset because she worried my family which i don’t live with. I didn’t confront her about it because i didn’t know how to properly, politely tell her i didn’t appreciate it what she did.

Did you guys think she overreacted?

I think her thought process was, after you not picking up after calling you 10 times, “Oh, God. Something happened to this person. They were in an accident or something.” I think she called your emergency contact to make sure you were okay since this was out of character for you. One of my managers did it at my old job when I didn’t show up for a shift cause I was in the hospital after suffering from a nasty fall and breaking my nose and didn’t have a chance to call in. I think she was worried something happened to you and that’s it.

One of my shifts didn’t show up last week to an open which is so unlike her, wasn’t answering her phone or anything so we got into contact with her mom and she was in a car accident on the way in. They were probably worried about you and were thinking the worst if it’s unlike you normally.
