Break a leg! I've wanted to participate in Barista Championships since I've been with Sbux (268**** partner) but there's so little interest in our district that even before Covid they rarely held them. I'm moving to Washington soon and hoping I'll get a chance to participate next year.

Your latte art is beautiful by the way!

Thank you! It was actually a quite good experience! You'll enjoy it so go for it! I didn't win it but I did very good, next year will be even better.

Haha thank you! If you go on my profile I had posted about latte art before. There's some photos from a book I use.

so! first of all, don't stress, it's ok if you don't win, just enjoy it. It was a very fun experience for me. Try and be yourself, be engaging and remember that the judges know you're nervous so no point in hiding it. I had 4 points taken off for using shot glasses (something I never do for hot drinks but today for some weird reason I did) and cause when trying to explain how to do latte art while I was doing it, I let the milk sit too long so the foam separated. So practice at your store whenever you can by talking about what you're doing as you're doing it. To yourself! Bar routine is very important so keep that in mind, also try not to draw outside the lines of Starbucks routine as I did (by saying: "I like doing it this way"). For the coffee tasting, do your homework, choose one coffee you're confident at and learn all the facts about it. Also try to incorporate some fun facts. I did House Blend and told them about how before House Blend was introduced in 1971, the standard one was Breakfast Blend and so on. They will ask you questions about ethical sourcing and all that jazz that Starbucks is proud of so read the Coffee and Tea Manual! If you cannot get it from your SM ask your DM. You MUST be allowed access to the tools you need. That's all I can think of right now. Hope that was helpful. Just believe in yourself and fake it till you make it!

latte art was in the score card??
Artepinokio [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Yep! You have to teach the judges how to make a latte and then make 3 flat whites with latte art.

i don’t think latte art or even lattes are on out score card! my competition is focused on the shaken espresso and a refresher so i think it’s best to double check based on the copy of the score cards your sm has
Artepinokio [OP] 1 points 1y ago
That's weird though. What kind of championship is that if there's no latte art? I mean no offence but shaken espresso doesn't require a lot of technique. But you're right about checking the score cards.

i have no clue i saw your post and freaked and texted my sm lol and she said latte art is not part of our districts. there’s a lot of emphasis to details so i think the shaken espresso will have a lot of points on the espresso parts (what happens if you under/over pull a shot, what flavor notes you get and how the signature roast makes an impact). there might also just be less people interested in the champions in my district
