Not allowed to enforce mask mandate...?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by farblondjet
I live and work in a city/county that reinstated a mask mandate for all people regardless of vaccine status ages 5 and up yesterday. All morning long unmasked guests came in and out of the cafe, but my SM did not acknowledge this. By the afternoon, a sign was placed on the door stating masks were required to come inside. However, I also heard my SM talk to a few partners about how if someone comes in without one, we are not to enforce the mandate because there are too many legal repercussions right now. This was not said to me directly, and I assume that is because I have very strong feelings on the requirement of having a mask where we live... So that being said, I can't verbatim repeat all the words she was saying. It doesn't make sense to me as this is actually something announced by the local government as an official order.
Is my SM just trying to gloss over potential backlash from guests, or is this a brand new Starbucks policy that we are not supposed to acknowledge/enforce wearing a mask in spite of government mandate? *If this is not a company policy - is this worth contacting higher up?

Sounds like they’re just trying to avoid backlash from guests. if it’s a government mandate that requires masks by law, all stores have to comply. Even if it’s a private business

My shift once told me we should overlook the damn law so we could cater to these customers w o masks...... Follow the federal mandate over what a stupid companies policy has to say, I promise. Sbux doe not care about you, and the mandate was set in place to protect you ! There is nothing your managers can actually do about you enforcing it because it is required by law that you do so. Its like saying you shouldn't be carding minors for liquor to save their feelings 🙄😭

It sounds like they’re trying to avoid backlash from customers. There aren’t any legal repercussions, unless for some reason they are thinking of HIPAA violations. Which in that case, you have to wear a mask whether you are vaccinated or not, and you don’t have to come in to order, so if you have a health issue that keeps you from being able to wear a mask, come through drive thru.

I’ve only been a barista for 6 months (so take my opinion lightly) but I think it’s worth having a tough conversation with your manager. Back when vaccines were becoming more common and mask mandates were changing I had some talks with my SM about it, and as silly as it might sound corporate is really worried about HIPPA violations. I know my SM has been really confused and frustrated with the lack of clarity and consistency when it comes to company-wide COVID policies. It sounds like your manager and the DM needs to contact corporate and figure out what to do. If you’re not satisfied with any of that, I know a lot of local and state governments have reporting systems or question lines, maybe that could be a resource. I share your frustration, and I hope it gets figured out.
