I kinda wanna quit (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Peachytealove
I’ve only Been working here for like a few months. Some of my coworkers are fake as shit, they talk about other partners nearly all shifts whether they are in the back or just leaving their shift. It’s especially one who annoys me she just doesn’t act like a regular person saying move and gimmie and snatching things. I’m a minor and she’s an adult and she’ll get rude with me but try to backhand it. I mentioned it to my other coworkers but they downplay it. Work honestly makes me fed up it feels just like high school when I’m working there and I hate it. I love the pay tho and love how great I am on bar.

A similar situation is happening at my store except it’s 2 of the shifts that talk shit about every partner, whether they are new or old partners. They’ll have chats in the back for hours or when they open they’ll tell the other openers how horrible everyone is at their job. Me and a bunch of others partners tried to talk to them and tell them what they were saying isn’t appropriate but they didn’t change. We eventually had to go to our SM and our DM about it and it’s helped a little bit but they still say these types of things. I suggest transferring to a dif store because not every store is like that. Starbucks had a lot of great benefits and it’s not a bad job at all. If it’s just the people you don’t like, talk to your SM about it and see if you would be able to transfer to another store. Maybe work a few shifts at that store before hand so that you’ll know what it’s like before you commit.

Everything you're feeling is valid. I don't want you to think I'm dismissing that with what I'm saying next:

You're not an underbaked adult, you're basically one too if you can work at Starbucks. Can't smoke or drink, but that's kinda it. Highschool is just very structured adulthood. Society doesn't grow up, it just gets less regulated.

You can quit, that's a valid move. But this is also a valid time to learn how to deal with this crap. You don't have to put Starbucks on your resume or have your SM as a future reference. If you can, try to stick it out so you can figure out how you like to deal with people like that person snatching things from your hand.

Also, each store is different. Never hurts to look into transferring.

Sadly, you aren’t getting paid to be happy or make friends. You get paid a certain amount to get work done within a certain time frame. Remember that and carry on. It will be this way at every place you work at most of the time.

I don’t really feel that even if I’m paid to work I shouldn’t work in a kind of toxic environment and feel miserable every other shift especially if I’m a kid and they are all adults acting like children half of the time.

Its actually in the employee guidelines that we try to create a good work environment. So we technically are paid to be happy at work. If your fellow baristas be acting fake, feel free to submit anonymous notes to your store manager about behavior your seeing on the floor.

You can always transfer. I transferred out of a toxic store and it was amazing !

They told me I’d have to wait at least a few weeks or a month, lmao that was maybe a month ago when they told me that and we lost a few partners too so they’d be severely understaffed.

Fuck em lol. Your happiness at work comes first, I fully believe that. You will not do a good job if you’re miserable.
But ya I now vaguely remember like a 3 month rule or something before you could transfer. But I haven’t worked at Starbucks in almost a year

Sure you’re not paid to be happy or make friends, but you don’t have to settle for being miserable either. If your job is tolerable at the least, you will likely make more money as well, as you would be more willing to spend more time there with less mental toll/expense. OP, honestly I’d say quit and look into any other job that isn’t Starbucks. If you enjoy bar/making drinks, look into a local coffee shop, or other drink chain like Dutch Bros or Jamba Juice.
Don’t know where you live, but Target also tends to pay well for an entry level job, is usually really great with scheduling, and doesn’t require too much interaction with other employees. A lot of people hate Tarbucks but try asking the baristas there how they feel about it if you want to maybe continue with Starbucks.
