A few considerations:

Every year there are some changes in which doctors and clinics are covered by which policies. You need to go in and click on the "find a doctor" thing for the plans you're considering. Last year, had I kept my same insurance as the previous year, not a single one of my docs would have been in network. All of them had been on the previous year's list. Crazy. If you have any consistent prescriptions, do the same for those.

You're young. If you're also healthy and don't expect any real medical expenses (i.e. only routine checkups, generic prescriptions), you may do just fine with a bronze plus plan. They're very affordable as long as you don't really get sick.

If you do have some more expected medical expenses or you're just risk averse about this even if healthy, consider silver plans. That level provides you actually good insurance. A major car accident or hospital stay will not lead to enormous bills in the same way a bronze plan would. But it's not an insignificant jump in cost per paycheck from the bronze plus level.

If you use any vision correction, get a gold level vision plan. They're not very expensive, but every time I buy glasses, the sales people say "holy crap, your coverage is amazing! Where do you work??" I got prescription sunglasses with polarization and whatnot for $25 a couple years ago. And it still only costs a few bucks per paycheck.

You don't need all that Aflac nonsense. Medical, dental, and vision, and you can be done. Long term disability if you want. And feel free to name a beneficiary in case Starbucks literally actually kills you.

I've never met anyone for whom medical gold plans are worth it. I feel like you'd have to be way too sick to maintain a job at Starbucks to justify that cost.

ahh! thank u so much this is exactly what i needed!! i got a medical and vision plan, since i wear glasses, but i’m not sure on the dental? i don’t have anything really wrong or need anything right now maybe just a basic plan then?

I think I get silver dental just because I don't like risk, but I've never gotten anything other than cleaning and x-rays. Fully admit I'm wasting my money on that, but I sleep better knowing if I smash out my front teeth, I won't pay thousands to deal with that.

Edit: oh, and you're very welcome :)

A bit surprised because part of the the health care reform required most carriers to allow a child to remain on their parent's policy until 26.

There may be circumstances when that isn't true, but worth checking..

It may have been their parents choice to remove them :(

Those are the type of parents that deserve to be cutoff with no explanation.

I hope you can find a place to live. Your parents sound like dicks.

The person I talked to when I called enrollment was super helpful with me and my questions! She even helped me figure out that I was paying for too much coverage for what I needed and helped me save money! I'd say give them a call and see if they can help you out with the specifics! :)

This a really great suggestion, that’s literally what they are there for and a good place to at least start.

I would add, write down all the questions you can think of and take notes so you can ask follow ups if need be.

This stuff is needlessly complicated, but welcome to America!

Yes!!!! Writing down questions and concerns is always the best!

For dental coverage I asked my bfs mom who is a dental assistant. She told me to get the MetLife plan for dental, but I’m from MD so it may differ from state to state. I got my wisdom teeth pulled a few months after and they covered most of it, it would have been all of it but I unfortunately needed to get updated ex rays before the surgery so that ate into what they would pay for the year :/. But over all it saved me a lot of money and is accepted by most dentists in my area.
