new barista in need of some advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by celeste567
hi there! i recently was hired at my local starbucks and i was just informed when my first day is. i’m super excited and i can’t wait to start!! i needed some advice though. i’m starting college at the end of the month and i wanted to hear from other partners in college how many hours they work a week as a full time student. my store closes at 8 so my schedule when school starts looks like … monday: 5am-12pm, tuesday:off, wednesday:1-8, thursday:off, friday:3-8, saturday: 5am-12pm, sunday: off.

i just wanna know if this is a typical schedule for a student because i’d hate to not live up to the expectations of the job, especially since this is my first REAL job. pls let me know what you think is really appreciate it! thanks in advance for the help :)))

I really needed that money so I worked 30-35 hours a week and did fine. It’s a personal thing though - depending on major, classes, studying style, extra-curricular activities, and preferred life pace. Start lower if financially feasible and work up to test the waters. It’s easier for managers to give you more hours later than for them to begin giving you less hours. I would suggest three shifts a week might be a good starting point but two would be good as well.

Most of the student partners at my store work 15-25 hours a week. A few work close to 30, and one girl works 1 day a week. It’s up to your comfort level, as stated above just be open with your SM about availability as soon as you know it.

Tips for a Green Bean:
1) Ask ALL the questions. Even the “dumb” ones.
2) Ask different people the same thing. Find out what the “Starbucks standard” is and stick to it whenever possible (with exception within reason).
3) You’ll make 10 million mistakes. Everyone spills everything. You’re going to drop shakers and inclusion tubs, put a frap in the blender with no lid (oops!), forget the cold brew tap on, and flood the counter with coffee because you brewed it into an open urn on accident. It happens, don’t stress, plan to be more careful next time and move on.
4) Make it fun for yourself. Find your niche, challenge yourself to little games of improvement.
5) Take constrictive criticism. Try to hear what is said over how it was said. Sometimes in a stressful situation things come across as confrontational in the moment when they’re not intended to be. It’s okay to revisit that moment later and let the other person know “hey, I understand what you said but could you be softer with your delivery next time, it came off as [aggressive, gruff, disciplinary, etc] rather than coaching.” If you get push back on this talk to your SM! Respect is not optional.

thank you for the great advice!! i will definitely use it. i just had another question. in your experience we’re store managers pretty flexible with you when it come to availability?

For the most part. So, most SMs do their schedules 3 weeks in advance, so as long as your availability is correct and you let them know ahead of time about any time off or schedule changes, they’re pretty flexible. Even last minute changes, as long as it’s not something that happens *all* the time, are usually workable.

I prefer working 20-25 hours but usually ended up working more on the 30 hours side and it was fine for me. Didn’t get a lot of sleep with work and homework/studying though so I guess it also depends on how hard your classes are

Take it easy, since your a fresh green bean it’s gonna be a lot of information to take in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!!!!! Even if they seem silly, it’s better to know than not knowing at all! Be open about your availability with your manager and make sure to update it online as soon as you have your log in info. I wish you luck!!
