1. Don’t freak out with all the overwhelming information hitting you all at once. It takes about 3 months to getting good at it. 2. If you’re at the register, study study study the drinks on there when you have the time. It really helps for when you go into bar, you’ll know how many shots and pumps go in the drinks. 3. Ask questions! Ask as many questions as you want. I rather have people ask me than guess their way through what their doing

Well I’m not gonna lie, takes a toll on your mental health. I have cried during breaks a few times. But it does eat easier. Just be aware the first 2-3 months aren’t gonna be great. But my main tips and tricks are
1. Don’t get overwhelmed, the job can sometimes feel like life or death with everyone running around to get drinks out quick but at the end of the day it’s just a drink. 2. you don’t have to know everything right away, I’m a few months in and i still ask questions. I still sometimes forget how many pumps of a certian syrup on drinks i do. Really ask when you can wing it when you can’t. You’ll get the hang of it 3. take advantage of as many bennifits as possible, Starbucks (at least in my state) isn’t that high of a paying job. Sure you get tips but that’s about 1$ per hour. The bennifits make up for it a little. The free Spotify premium is saving me 10$ a month. I use the headspace app. The discount is awesome. 4. good luck and get to know your fellow baristas. I’d say at most locations we become close.

Absolutely not necessary but trying to quickly learn some regulars, their name and their order, is really nice. Even though I’m a pessimist I have to say most customers are pretty nice (the horrible ones just stick with you more) and it’ll make everyone’s experience better if you get to know them a little!

Former partner here,
The best advice I can give to newbies is to try to memorize recipes, syrup pumps, and shot amounts AT HOME!!! It will make it so much easier for you and everyone around you once you’re on the floor/behind the bar! I even had a partner make flash cards and a quizlet (sorry no link)

While I agree with the sentiment behind this, that’s pretty much working off the clock. I don’t think anyone should work off the clock and think about work when they aren’t at work.

I agree with you, which is one of the reasons that I left the company. It consumed me, even when I wasn’t there. I’m just giving tips based off of my experience and if you are like OP and seem to be really excited, it might not feel like that big of a deal. At the stores I worked at, there was never an appropriate length of training time before being thrown to the wolves basically. So studying outside of work just seemed to help myself and former coworkers!
