how to change availability? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by starsfade
i recently got the partner hours app but i was wondering if there is a way to change my availability as far as how many hours i want to work? on my application i stated that i was willing to work up to 20 hours a week, but i have been scheduled 40 hours for 3 weeks. i don’t want to have to ask my manager, because other partners have said that if you ask her she will reduce your hours to almost nonexistent until you either transfer or quit. also any advice for how to get through these next two weeks of 40 hours would be appreciated!! i honestly am not emotionally up to working that much, but i am not sure how i would be able to change it now that the schedule has been posted.

Log on to this site. On the left navigation bar select "My Availability". Here you can see your current availability as well as request a new one.

As a side note, starbucks is in a need of a ton of employees. You're probably being scheduled 40 hours because they NEED you. A manager would have to be straight up an idiot to prefer you quit or transfer than to take the 20 hours you're offering.

I would first just ask your manager to discuss your availability and how much you're being scheduled first. For all you know maybe they'll schedule you properly no problem.

(Im prefacing this next part with, im very confrontational when people attempt to gaslight or exploit other people so if you NEED this job, maybe dont do this next part)

But if they DO cut your hours to 0 or anything like that, Id call their bluff on it and just be like "Ive seen that you've taken me off the schedule, text me when you've figured out how to schedule me according to the availability you agreed to when you hired me"

And if they continue to schedule you for 40 hours, only show up for the ones that fit your availiability and inform your manager "I am unable to work these shifts that are outside of the availability I provided you. I will not show up for these shifts."

i really love my coworkers but this job is stressing me out so much. it’s really hard to find a time to talk to my manager because i usually work closing and she very specifically said not to text her outside of work. i’m trying to stick it out, but it’s very tempting to just quit, especially because i’m not sure i can physically make it through another two 40 hour weeks 😭

You can always leave them a physical note or email them. Keep it short like "I will not be able to work these shifts as they are outside my availibility. Im hoping you will be able to find coverage for these shifts"

Trust me, they'll make time to contact you.

But also if quitting is the better option for your circumstance, go for it! Dont let the bux eat your mental.

If you change your availability in the app it will go to your SM anyway so you might as well talk to her. Unfortunately in the app you can only specify WHEN you're available to work and not how much. An SM cutting people's hours like that is pretty unethical, too. If you said 20 in your interview and she agreed to that when she hired you, she needs to stick to it.

yeah, i think you’re right about me just talking to her. i know it’s unethical for her to reduce my hours that much, but since i’m a new partner, i’m sort of scared to go to my DM. i already might have to report one of my SSVs because he targets me (he’s homophobic/transphobic), so i feel like i’m causing a lot of problems by bringing anything up 😭😭😭

I'm so sorry, sounds like you're going through a lot. I want to be optimistic and hope your SM will help you out - she should. Just remind her that you only agreed to 20 hours and you know 40 won't do for your work/life balance.. She needs to address the partner issue too. Hate isn't tolerated at Starbucks. You definitely don't sound like the problem here.
