Did a tips for new ssvs a day or two ago. Thought Id do one for greenbeans.
Preface: Depending on your store, you MAY get "proper" training with modules and activities. Most likely you will not. These tips are aimed to help with both scenarios.
1. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If your trainer is running info by you about how to work different positions, pay attention and ask questions. If something doesnt click or you spaced out, ask them to say it again or explain it more. I guarentee you its a lot less frustrating to have a greenbean ask a million questions when they need help than seeing a greenbean stare at a ticket for 5 minutes and try to remember how to put an oatmeal together.
2. There is always something to do. For the occasions where the store isnt busy, restock your area. If youre on bar, get urself milks, cups, etc. If you're on warming stock the bags, utensils, condense warming food (ask your shift how to do that if you dont know how to do that). And i dont mean you have to be 100% energy output the whole shift, but restocking and cleaning your area is a hell of a lot more useful than wiping the same countertop for 10 minutes.
3. Call outs. We are constantly moving back and forth. For safety mostly, but also for efficiency, call out your positions when near your other partners. Saying things like "Behind" or "On your left" when moving around partners who arent looking at you helps prevent collisions and spills. (Non slip shoes are also very useful. Starbucks has a partnership with sketchers. Ask your manager about it.)
4. Training is different for lots of people for several factors, but normally you will learn POS (point of sale) aka taking orders early on. When you are taking orders and using the computers, pay attention to the right side of the screen. When you input a drink, the right side will have information for ingredients, measurments for different sizes, what comes with whipped cream, etc. Paying attention and familiarizing yourself with that info will help you when you learn bar immensely.
Last couple of notes.
- Believe in yourself. You're much more competent than you give yourself credit for.
- Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Shit happens just roll with it.
- Greenbeans get asked all of the time when they're first hired to cover shifts, stay late, or come in early. Don't be afraid to say no. You're not letting anyone down by NOT working more than you're scheduled.
- Good Luck Have Fun!
P.S.
If you do dishes, dont put shaker cups inside of eachother fresh out the dishwasher
