I ABSOLUTELY HATE DTO (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by symebe
So I am a recently new trainee for Starbucks And the position was to be a barista ofc. This is my 3rd week and they put me on DTO today.... I literally hate it so much omfg. I’m patiently trying to learn everything so I can be useful but when it’s people w mean atmospheric vibes it just lowers my mood. DTO:1 ;ME:0......

DTO is DIFFICULT so please don't beat yourself up for not getting it right away.❤

❤️thanks love

You're welcome! Once you get used to it, it will get better. I promise! ❤

Not gonna lie, DTO is one of my favorite spots because all I have to do is take orders. However, it was very hard to handle when I was new and I hated it.

I hated dto until I got used to where all the buttons are and what and how people generally order. Now dto is one of my favorites - it's easy, physically not tiring and I can mix it up with fun intros n stuff :3

I have no doubt that once I get the hang of everything that I’ll have the same feeling as you :)

I never put newbies on dto first …. It’s pos or window … you have to really know tge drinks well to be able to handle all the tic tokers
medusas-garden 3 points 1y ago
I end up putting a lot of newbies on DTO a lot because 90% of the time I have to put other people on window (we have a partner with dementia that can only do window and another with some health issues and window is best for her). And everyone usually has a headset on and is able to help out.

I always hated that they put new people in dto/dtw that position is way harder than it appears
janedoe__05 6 points 1y ago
do you have the hang of POS yet? cause if not then ya it makes dto a million times harder. just keep practicing and things’ll get better over time- good luck!
symebe [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I have no idea what PTO stands for but I’m assuming it means the person at the window. If so I have been told that I do it perfectly. When it comes to DTO I’m still trying to memorize where everything is while the other partners are constantly correcting me on it. I will keep a positive vibe tho 👍🏾 :)

no no- pos aka the register (point of sale)
symebe [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Oh shit I read that too fast but yeah, I have experience with the front register. My last job was as a cashier so I catch on fast, it’s a matter of time is all I’m saying. If I’m asking someone to repeat an order one of my supers automatically come over to finish the order, puts pressure that’s all

DTO freaking sucks. That was my home the first 4-5 months I worked at sbux. I’m almost never there now but it straight up feels like a punishment if I’m told to go there
yashiyo 2 points 1y ago
THISS! I’ve been working at a newly opened sbux for about three months now, and i am ALWAYS in DTO it’s genuinely exhausting.

Honestly, keep asking to be put on DTO. I know, it sucks. But it’s the only way you’ll really get good at the POS! You can also be on front register but we rarely have cafe customers at my store. Remember, you are the boss of those customers in that moment. Tell them “give me one second let me type this in for you” and they have to oblige. If they start telling you their next order ignore them and then when you finished putting the first one in ask them if there’s anything else. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They didn’t pay attention they’ll have to suck it up.

When you’re starting out it’s definitely good to repeat their orders back to them as well! Honestly, you got this!

Thank you !!! I definitely will use your advice
Seaweedgreedy 3 points 1y ago
Please tell the shifts/managers working that you hate it bc they more than likely have someone else who prefers to be on DTO. Just let them know that you prefer to be on literally anything else and if they’re nice they will make it happen so u don’t hate coming to work:D
symebe [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thank you so much, I will be sure to let them know but also I’m gonna suck it up and learn to do it so it won’t become such a burden !!!! Thanks for the advice ☺️

DTO can be a pretty difficult position so don’t be too hard on yourself. In fact after 4 years I still hate it because I hate the sound of my voice and when other partners have a headset on I get self-conscious and get stage fright tbh 😬.

DTO is ultimately the easiest job, at least in a certain sense, but all the same I agree that it sucks so much ass.

It gets easier with time. As you build up your other skills, you'll get so used to it you can do it in your sleep. I think the worst part of it is tied between just not being able to do as much (unless you're also warming) and WHEN PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE ORDERING. DON'T COME IN AND SAY "DRAGON DRINK WITH THE WATER," JUST SAY MANGO DRAGONFRUIT REFRESHER. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SAYING AND YET HERE YOU ARE, WASTING MY TIME AND YOUR OWN $5 WHILE YOU TURNING MY DRIVE THRU INTO YOUR OPENING ACT FOR THE CLOWN SHOW.
