Training time & Skill Checkpoint question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GrandAbbreviations39
Hey all!

I'm a new barista and I'm wondering how much time the training usually takes. I'm in Europe so my experience might not be universal, but I just had my first Skillcheck on my 8th day of work. I was told about it the day before so I had like one afternoon to get ready for it, and only did a coffee tasting right before as practice, when in theory your Skillcheck coffee tasting should not be your first as far as I know.

I know there are quite a few new hires, and the store was pretty understaffed before, so that might be a reason to speed my (and others) training up? Or is it supposed to be this fast and intense and I'm just delusional lol? I don't know, it just feels a little rushed. How long did training take for you?

I didn’t really get trained at all haha. I did all the computer training but then I was just thrown on the floor and learned as I went. That’s kinda my preference so it worked out but I know it’s not for everyone.

Yeah you gotta start the practical stuff sooner or later. I'm glad it worked out fine for you. I'm sure I'll manage as well, it was just more of being thrown in the deep end than I expected.

i got four days of training, and my manager planned on giving me a skillcheck for hot bar but she never did. so yeah… training was definitely rushed. plus there’s only so much you can learn online, practice and repetition is what really helps you learn.

Yeah you're absolutely right, practice matters most in the end. I guess I'm just used to more structured environments, where the training schedules are more rigid so I was a bit surprised.
