Question for any old timers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chrysinthebux
Hello all, so I am approaching my ten years with the siren and I have a question about the process of taking the coffee break. Here is my situation, my ten year hits in November of this year and I am about to move across country. I have the ability to transfer into a bucks in my new town but I also have a position available to me at a lovely mom and pop shop that I worked at for many years in my past. Now my heart just wants to work at my old home shop but my logistical mind is telling me I would be dumb to step away from the siren so close to this " milestone". Has anyone on here taken the coffee break and if so how is the process. I also feel kinda bad transferring into a new store with the intention of bailing on them relatively shortly so I would want to be upfront about my intentions. The long and short of it is do you all think the paid time off and stock benefits are worth it if I really feel like my time with the bucks is done? Any advice would be appreciated.

So I’ve worked for Starbucks for almost 18 years . Ugh I know.. but I have not taken my coffee break yet , I do know that you are not paid during your coffee break. You keep your benefits but you have to pay for them. I also know that you are not allowed to work at another job while on the break, unless it’s under the table and they can’t track it. I’ve also been told that if you only take a 6 month break as opposed to the whole year you can keep your pay and position when you return . But anything past the 6 months you are not guaranteed the same pay, position or store preferences.

The whole point of a coffee break after that long is that you deserve a year off with the security of having your pay and position when you come back to the company. I honestly can’t remember what they said about being paid or not but I was hired a few months ago and they said it’s pretty much like you pressed pause and walked away for a year :)

Thanks for the input! I realized my wording was off, I know that it's not paid while your on the coffee break I am just trying to think of the benefits of staying with the siren and earning vacation time is something in favor of the bucks. I'm honestly leaning towards just leaving, it feels like this chapter in my life is coming to a close and after talking to my sm it seems like the process and restrictions of the coffee break aren't gonna be worth it to me. I appreciate having a place to stew it over!
