School Availability (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ughmonse
I’m a relatively new barista, started back in March. My availability has been 100% all summer and it’s about to drastically change because I’m going back to school. I’m a music major with a pretty full schedule (18 units) and can’t really decided how I should set my availability. In the past I made myself available from Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I’ve made it work but I’m afraid that if I change it I would hardly get scheduled at all, or too much. I also drastically messed up and thought school started later so now I have 2 days to decided before that 3 weeks ahead mark is up. During the semester, school is a 100% priority. Is this just a conversation I should have with my manager? Should I just trust my gut and set it to what it was before?

Thanks for any advice :)

edit: I think I was jus a little scared to talk to my manager lol he just took on our store full time (he had 2) so I’m jus getting to know him. Our conversation was good and we worked something out well.

Definitely talk to your manager, they should accommodate you especially if you got hired with them knowing you were in school and you would need this type of accommodation to juggle both school and work. That’s what I did 😊

the way you typed it up here is how i would explain it to your SM.

“hey, my fall semester is starting soon and i’m just letting you know ahead of time that my availability is going to be reduced. i have x number of classes and will only be available to work on these days. school is my priority when classes are in session. i hope you can understand that and accommodate my changing availability accordingly.” and then send in the request. this is how i approached my SM with the same exact issue, but i also told her that my availability will change back to what it was before the semester started during winter and summer break. your SM knew what they were getting into hiring a student, so accommodating your schedule shouldn’t throw them into a fit. school’s the priority for kids 99% of the time. they’ll survive without you
