An Americano....but no water *A Tarbucks Dialogue* (self.starbucksbaristas)

I had a man come in and this is the 7 minute exchange I had with him :
"Hi! How are you today?"
"Yeah I need a Venti Iced Americano but put the ice in first then I want a quad shot poured on top of the ice and then top it off with ice."
"Okay, so are you just wanting a small amount of water...?"
"What? No, I don't want any water in it."
*looks at me like I'm stupid*
"Okay sir, I have that ready for you."
"You did something wrong"
*Last sliver of soul dies*
"....I did it exactly how you asked"
"Well when I get it other places there's more in here I don't know what you did but it's not correct"
"Well sir, wherever you go probably still puts water in it because and Americano is espresso and water so -"
cuts me off with "No it doesn't, an Americano is just espresso"
No. NO SIR. ESPRESSO IS JUST ESPRESSO. AN AMERICANO IS WATERED DOWN ESPRESSO.
In my 3 years as a barista am I missing something here???

Nah other baristas probably lied to him to get rid of him. Or there’s a coffee shop out there who has a different view on americanos.

And I don't blame any other barista for doing so 🤣 I told him to just ask for a quad shot over ice in a venti cup and he was like...no. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ I only have this GIANT stack of drink cards but cool cool cool he's obviously the barista now

I would’ve pulled like 5 shots and then 2 but with water and asked him which tasted right. Watch him say the watered down espresso is right

Tbh I don’t even argue with these people anymore. I had someone order a tall coffee Frappuccino add 2 shots, add whip no ice. So I pulled shots put frap roast , milk and whip and handed the cup out. Have a good day. Lol

Yeah, the Americano always has water. It’s literally called an Americano because Americans, while deployed in Italy, did not like how strong espresso was and so they watered it down to be closer to drip coffee.

Whenever someone ordered shots over ice like this I pull the shots and pour them over ice and then I give the cup a few solid swirls/shakes while behind the bar still. It melts the ice more because usually this is just people trying to scam an iced latte so more melted else means less room for their ill-gotten condiment bar milk

No, the ice fills up more space. Thats why the iced cups are bigger.

But solid ice covers more surface area usually. Like if you fill a cup all the way with ice, and then it melts, it'll be nearly empty

No an Americano is a watered down espresso. You are right. I learned this traveling internationally where restaurants would have a fancy espresso machine but no brewed coffee. This was the closest thing I could get to a brewed coffee. I’m American. So I guess they coined that for all us 🇺🇸

My boyfriend orders a ridiculous Starbucks drink similar to this one. He was ordering it as an iced Americano forever but he would always complain about how fast it melted and got watery and gross. I had to explain that he *can* just order an espresso over ice.
Now he orders a “venti 6-shot blonde espresso over ice” like a pro, and I’m worried about his heart exploding.

😂😂😂 I've been a barista for a little over 3 years and I consume A LOT off coffee....so far no heart explosions. Also thank you for turning him over to that! Makes everyone's life a little easier ☺

Uh.....hmm. I work at a licensed store so half the time the points system doesn't add up but if thats what he wants then sure but don't tell us we're doing something wrong when we do exactly what you ask. Also long shots on a Mastrena is like drinking burnt soil 🤣 but whatever makes that man happy
