Penalized for connecting? (short rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dexterwolf1
Sometimes when i’m connecting with a customer, my shifts will always chime in and in a subtle way basically say “back to work.” Especially more on front register… but we’re also told to connect with customers, so?

or even better yet, i’ll try to help someone with their starbucks app really quickly or explain a drink and I get told i’m holding up the line… does this happen at all to
you guys? 🤔

If there's a line, I try to keep connections to the space of the transaction. Chat while their card is processing or while I'm making change, but don't hold up the folks behind them by waxing on. Spending 3 extra minutes helping someone figure out how to work the app might make that person's day better, but the 5 people behind them will be pissed. if you're taking time from service to build extra connections, that's not worth it in shift calculus. If you're taking time from cleaning, stocking, or prepping, you can have all the time you want imo. But i gotta make sure we're respecting the time of other customers in line.

This is true… but I only ever take the extra time if I know the next person’s drinks aren’t even ready yet!

People are more patient waiting on drinks than they are to order. In a coffee shop. Hilariously it's the reverse in restaurants.

Yes! In my store they never force us to do connections. I mean yea they say we need to work on it or give us better ways that kind of tailor to each of our personalities but I’m just glad my manager realizes that we are all great people and we connect naturally in our own way 🥰

My store is also like this. Our SM doesn’t nitpick at us. I think this is beneficial, they only step in if there’s a problem. They don’t force connections, and that’s why our store is highest in customer connect in the area. Takes a lot of stress off to have a great manager

Yeah I’ve heard the stories so I was a little apprehensive but I’m a naturally chatty person but I do also know how to read a room and know when people are just not up for being talkative which is fine. They can’t exactly penalize me if the customer doesn’t want to talk lol well at least I hope they wouldn’t

my morning shifts yell at me when i don’t connect or like ask the question of the day it’s very annoying. also i like to close the window while waiting bc it’s hot/cold and i get yelled at for that too. my social battery runs out too fast so i hate doing window connections because sometimes they have to be long incase bar is backed up
