Curious... Money reasons aside, why did you choose to work for Starbucks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheRedditTeacher
For me it was because I enjoy coffee a lot and wanted to learn how to use an espresso machine. Very excited to hear your reasons!
lhavard194 points1y ago
They called me back.
HengroenAndLlamrei37 points1y ago
The real reason
goldqueen28718 points1y ago
No but how come every other coffee shop was unable to communicate with me
lobosloboslobos8 points1y ago
Honestly same. I expected to work there for only three months because it wasn’t what i wanted to do. Here I am two years and a hatred for humanity later.
LuckyPotter777136 points1y ago
I’m not gonna be side-eyed the whole day for being who i am. A very accepting atmosphere is expected and anything less is not tolerated, and i love this place for it.

Same. Only way if be able to go to school without drowning in debt
hammerkat60582 points1y ago
I genuinely liked the vibe I got from my local Starbucks. They had the manpower and time to make connections with people and it was very pleasant there.
However, the Starbucks I worked at was always slammed. No time to talk to anyone. It was like we were a coffee assembly line, like robots.
No one cared about us as people, just random weird drink preparers

Because I graduated during a pandemic and couldn’t get a better job so I figured I’d be the stereotypical prestigious liberal arts school grad working at a coffee shop.
kaiserthewiser9 points1y ago
Hey same here. Graduated last year and have been working part time jobs since then
Bwaybelter9 points1y ago
Dude same lol
jdsalingersdog8 points1y ago
I hear that, just 10+ years later. *shrug*
miitopia_emblem45 points1y ago
It’s very close to where I live. People are also less shitty irl about being a barista over a burger flipper (but not by much lol)
kitcat121044 points1y ago
my bf said “i can totally see you working at starbucks” and i was like “.....ur right” so i applied and now here we are
GuiltyGoblin39 points1y ago
Because I love coffee, been drinking since I was 12. I love the chaos of a rush, and I thoroughly loved writing cups and connecting before mobile orders were a thing.
That was before the chaos of a rush became overwhelming, and stickers took over writing, and customers became a lot crankier.
I still love the idea of Starbucks, and I try to live up to that. It just feels like that magic is long gone now, replaced by canned logic typed up by a studio of fingerless monkeys.
The only thing keeping me sane is my tightknit crew.

Tbh, the manager from my store asked for my pronouns when I met him, and it was the first time anyone I interviewed for did that. That let me know it would be accepting. I miss him and hope he's doing okay, he left before I did due to severe health issues :(
Codyskank17 points1y ago
I initially started for the ASU benefit but I kinda burned out on school and I’ve just stuck around for who knows what reason. The people I work with mostly.
BabeLincoln42015 points1y ago
because the pandemic closed my local coffee shop
ObnoxiousR8 points1y ago
Im so so so sorry to hear that... i hope you can go back or find a real coffee shop.
BabeLincoln4209 points1y ago
thank you, i’m finally getting around to it after a year of working at starbucks. trying to get into bartending
medusas-garden14 points1y ago
I used to be a host/waitress and was initially looking for a new job in the restaurant industry but also was looking for jobs that didn’t depend on tips for income and I could easily transfer locations for school. I also needed more flexibility with hours bc they only needed me on weekends. I never ended up needing to transfer for school but I left my new hostess job of two weeks for Starbucks and never looked back.

spookyboi137 points1y ago
the location that hired me is very open minded and affirming.
also having a discount on coffee going into my first fulltime of semester of classes after an LOA will be a god send.
Daryl916 points1y ago
I was a usual customer since the store opened in my area. The manager saw me and heard I lost the previous job (yay 2020) and said hey why don’t you apply. I thought hey this could be fun even if it’s less money I was used to. I at least know the people here and got along with them.
Some of them.
drinkliquidclocks6 points1y ago
I work at a licensed store not for the bux but my job is the same
- less gross and higher paying than other food service jobs, less boring than other entry level jobs
- doesnt drug test lolol
- ive looked and haven't found a better job that would pay me as much, I enjoy my job so making a dollar more for a crappier job isn't worth it
- the customers are MUCH more pleasant than other jobs I've had (pizza place, gas station, bar/grill)

sidneyistrash5 points1y ago
asu, free coffee, and all the gays work there
jdsalingersdog5 points1y ago
I had just returned from a long trip away, was in a bit of a slump & essentially between jobs. Starbucks was a place that I could apply to online, when I wasn’t feeling mentally & emotionally capable of leaving the house to apply in person. I chose it over Barnes & Noble for the atmosphere, the available hours, the perceived (& real) benefits & pay.
KristaDaystar4 points1y ago
The first time, in 2005, it was such a "cool" place to work as a college kid. Also I had friends who worked there. This time, I went back for IVF benefits. It was a job I was sure I could get and do successfully and undergo IVF treatment, even tho it's "below" my education level, experience, and I took a paycut. I don't want to diminish, I really like working for Starbucks, but IVF was my main motivation, when I can make more by using my degree in another field, with less drain, mentally and physically.
wildaloofrebel554 points1y ago
Free coffee and I needed money. I was there every day anyway…
fightnroundtheworld4 points1y ago
It seemed like a better option than Best Buy.
I didn’t even drink coffee when I was hired. Now I can’t stop.
Onward! (To give you an idea how long it’s been since I worked there.)
andyboy2324 points1y ago
It's a trans-friendly company.
tinydesthique4 points1y ago
i think if i wanted a real cafe/coffee making experience, i’d go to a small business cafe because they use real machines for making espresso rather than fully automated ones like starbucks. but with that aside, i’ve been working for starbucks for more than a year, and my primary reason for working here is because of free drinks and being able to customize drinks on my own. before working here, i dreaded spending money here (i hardly ever did) because it was always so expensive but now that i do work here, i really don’t have to worry about spending $10 on a drink and a small pastry when i can either get it for free, or pay at least almost half that cost.
kris10vs4 points1y ago
The discount. I spend a lot of money at the BUX, so why not get a discount. Plus I took my dream job (school librarian) but it was an hour less a day and the pat was less than working in the special Ed class I was in for 10 years… this allowed me to earn that money back and get free coffee! Hell yes!

v_is_4_violet2 points1y ago
Vice versa, I feel like working as a bartender helped me with adapting to Starbucks! Good luck to you on your journey! I really feel like customer connecting while on café bar will really help you transitioning into a bar!

Because i want to have a cafe in the future and decided i needed a change from an office job where i mainly deliver mail and pick up phone calls.
Aldra272 points1y ago
I worked at a theme park, and a drug store, I hated both of them, manly cuz they have a union, they had high fees, but they always denied me the benefits, also a teacher from high school told me that the best job during college was bartending if you want to travel, so I decided to try that but before that I wanted to have some experience making drinks and working at a bar, so sbux was the best thing
Then I found out of all the benefits, and I was like dang should've done this from the start. Honestly I didn't ask what my pay was gonna be I just say yes to everything, and sbux has been the only job in which my happy both with my pay and they respect my availability
Honestly I'm still grateful that I was hired, I love my store, my partners and customers, it truly doesn't feel like a job
XxTRUEPINOYxX2 points1y ago
Benefits package honestly I didn’t expect the pay to be good as an outside shift. I go back even if they offer me my old pay when I first started. Didn’t use the school as I’m already close to getting my B.S and I’m still under my parents health insurance
lewabwee2 points1y ago
I had only worked fast food before and didn’t know what else to do. I figured Starbucks meant a similar line of work without smelling like grease.
I had ended up being hired by Dunkin first but the customers were so rude and the training was so poor I bailed once I got a call back from Starbucks. That was five years ago. Still isn’t as bad as that month at Dunkin but it used to be world’s apart.
[deleted]2 points1y ago

In June of 2020 my retail job I had before made me want to actually un-alive myself (had a plan and everything) and Starbucks was hiring at not awful pay and offered benefits that included mental health it was also a 10min walk from my home rather than my previous job that was 45min walk (I have no car)

Want to open my own coffee shop
Annonymous22356892 points1y ago
I work a main job so I chose Starbucks because I wanted a morning shift job for additional income for savings. Figured a coffee shop could always use help in the morning, especially a big Corp like Starbucks. Worked out in the end, I’m still a partner and it’s going great. I also do enjoy coffee too so there’s that perk and learning how to make additional drinks have been fun.
AmbitiousCriticism2 points1y ago

I do love coffee, and have been going to Starbucks since high school. 2005 was when I graduated high school to give a time frame. I was a gold card member since 2013, and wanted to work at one when I was in college the first time, but could never get hired.
I am going back to college, and lost my old job due to COVID. I thought Starbucks works around school schedules, so that. Also the health insurance as I am a trans woman, and Starbuck's health insurance will pretty much cover mostly everything I need. Since the company as a whole is very trans positive and supportive that is another driving factor for me.
On a separate note, I love hot bar and making drinks. I feel so zen when making flat whites, and making latte's and cappuccino's look nice. This mornings shift it was slow enough and I got a flat white, and just calmly put it together, and got the dot perfect and was super proud of it. I wish it wasn't so much focused on speed and drive times that I could calmly make the drinks instead of needing to crank them out as fast as humanly possible.
v_is_4_violet1 points1y ago
Besides my unhealthy love for coffee?
I've honestly worked myself nearly dead for companies that didn't give me anything in return. I worked my ass off my whole life. The last company I worked for besides Starbucks filed for bankruptcy without telling it's employees for months. Some people went to work one day to find an eviction sign on the store window. I was, at the time, being sexually harassed by my store manager but had no HR to report it to because the company sold it's corporate office before the bankruptcy. I worked full time but didn't get any benefits... And I hated the idea of working for a company being highly unethical in so many ways. Also... I hate that this matters to me but Ive never been recognized for any of the hard work I've done, ever. Also I was paying almost $800 for health insurance a month just to pay for everything out of pocket with a deductible of almost $10,000 😭 I hit a point where I kept taking odd jobs just till I could get a job at Starbucks. It took me a little over a year but I finally did it. I'm not at all delusional about the kind of company it is. But honestly for someone like me I honestly think this is the best case scenario. There aren't to many companies that offer this much to employees and are still striving to be better... Or can be bullied into doing better. I take advantage of almost every benefit lyra, headspace, health insurance, childcare... And my life quality in general is just better because of this job. I have enough flexibility to still take care of my kid and stay involved in my community. Also I won partner of the quarter last week and the idea of this all still brings me to tears. I know we all like to vent on hear, which is totally and completely valid and necessary. But I always have to stop myself and remind myself how grateful I am.

It was one of two places that gave me an interview and the only one that phoned back after the interview lol. Tbh I was still in high school and would pretty much have taken any job that was offered
miguelb11 points1y ago
I was unemployed beginning of the pandemic and I was desperate for a job. So I applied to starbies, McDonald’s, GameStop, and a gas station. Starbucks called first and they job offered me first! 😅😅 I like my job lol, but I didn’t care where I worked. I was broke broke and now I’m just broke 😂😭😅
lunafreyaknox1 points1y ago
Felt it was a decent place to work and needed maternity leave quickly. I also love coffee so free coffee was a huge bonus to me.
IvoryAngel112071 points1y ago
i just wanted to work at starbucks for some reason and had been trying to for abt 2 years (and went through two other jobs) before actually being hired. currently my favorite job i’ve had to date, mainly because my manager is a wonderful person and acts like a real adult (unlike previous managers i’ve had), i get along rly well with my coworkers (give or take a few), and a few choice regulars who make the long shifts worth it for a few minutes of interaction :)
KindnessYoga1 points1y ago
National chain so I could transfer, heard the benefits were good.
Also so I could finally live out my hipster barista dreams.
hermitcraber1 points1y ago
I read way too much fanfiction and romanticized the idea of working in a coffee shop
emileeavi1 points1y ago
The managers of my store threw me in since two people up and quit

peachsnappIe1 points1y ago
I got to know all the baristas from my local starbucks including the manager, and we all pretty much became friends! So after a couple months of them asking me to apply, I finally did! And thankfully I did get the job lol, but i'm loving it so far! Especially since I get to work with people I know pretty well :)
Royal_Concentrate_001 points1y ago
Funny thing. I've actually been applying to work for the siren for years. I thought it seemed like a chill place to work. I never got a call. That was until covid. Now I understand that fate was trying to spare me, this is hell.
Squirrelylove1 points1y ago
Back when I was hired, we had pretty good insurance at a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, that has changed significantly in the past 13 years.

when i was in middle school, i remember always going out on the weekends and taking the train to machida and getting starbucks with my closest friends. it was the best. i correlated those good memories to starbucks and always wanted to work at once ever since
later it became because my nearest store was super inclusive in terms of lgbtq and racially and that made me feel very comfortable for who i am! i'm a bit burnt out now, but i still really like working here :)

I was a customer for many years, so when my husband and I split up and I needed a job, Starbucks offered the benefits I needed. I've been using the ASU benefit for over a year and I'm about to start using the healthcare benefit. I appreciate that I can get those benefits working part time, so I can focus on school and be there for my kids.
Besides the benefits, though, I love my coworkers and have made some great friends there. Plus I'm still a customer, and the discount is great.
Ashamed_Equal1 points1y ago
My twin brother applied everywhere else in my town, and my parents told me that they would ground me if I applied to the same places that he did. They knew that I would have a better shot at getting a job, and they didn’t want to deal with a situation where I would get accepted and he would get denied for the same company🤷♀️
I’ve stayed for 6 years for the job security while I transfer back and forth from home and college
ibsmith05111 points1y ago
I started at a different coffee chain that’s very little known in my area, worked my way up very quickly but was paid very little, was very bored as we had no costumers, had zero benefits, and worked for someone who didn’t care too much about employees and only his business. If we messed up a drink, we had to pay for half of it. Besides the large pay raise I got to be a shift at starbucks, working there was much more structured, I’m never bored, and I get many benefits. My coworkers are much nicer and we’re all like a little family at my store. My manager is much better than the one I used to work for, and although it’s a lot harder and sometimes doesn’t feel worth the money/effort, I’m on a real career path now with my new manager
organizedmess721 points1y ago
it always seemed like such a welcoming and open atmosphere to work in, and I’m lucky that my store really made it that way! Also the flexibility; I needed to transfer stores because of school and both managers were very accommodating!
claudiaabou1 points1y ago
honestly idk. free coffee ig?
cilantroprince1 points1y ago
i came because i couldn’t get a job and my friend who works at sbux hooked me up, and i’m staying because i don’t have the drive or passion to start a career. and of all places to work, though it’s stressful, it’s not too bad. i love my coworkers to pieces, the free coffee is amazing, and the pay is good.
Roseyy-Girl1 points1y ago
