fun fact, the summer now brewing says it is a dishwasher

Just cause they say it is doesn't mean it actually is. Refer to above pictures
Squirrelylove 42 points 1y ago
The above picture references something that is stained. Staining and dirty is not the same thing.
sheep_heavenly 63 points 1y ago
This sub is why I have zero trust in other stores.

You can't pinch off a stain, generally. I guarantee if you ran your finger across that whisk you'd pick up a lot of the ""stain"".
vulgar_witch 12 points 1y ago
Don't worry I agree with you. Unless you have a dishwasher at work that is like the one at home, wash with soap first. Always been taught that in every single store I've worked that has had a "dishwasher".
MonoCandy 10 points 1y ago
Fitting name
juju483 6 points 1y ago
Just because there's still debris on the dishes doesn't mean it isn't. You've never seen a dishwasher run and there's still some food/debris on dishes?
kooo2001 65 points 1y ago
I rinse everything then throw it in hobart bc the new standard is hobart does all the work but things like this happen so i always rinse
Squirrelylove 36 points 1y ago
As you should. Debris always needs to be rinsed off prior to putting dishes in a dishwasher.
Pylon-Cam 11 points 1y ago
And with things like pitchers, inclusion tubs, and mocha containers, we also need to scrub with soap if we see visible residue.

A quick spray and a trip to the Hobart won’t get it all off.
Aliciarox11189 2 points 1y ago
Exactly or it will be filled with grounds and other grossness
Squirrelylove 1 points 1y ago
Agreed
Vegetable_Turnover51 27 points 1y ago
I still taught my trainees to rinse off the dishes before putting them in the Hobart even after finding out that the standard changed lol🤷🤷🤷
kqs13 12 points 1y ago
It's still standard to rinse things before putting them in the hobart, you just don't have to use soap anymore
vulgar_witch 43 points 1y ago
Starbucks seems to think so. Starbucks standard is to just rinse off debris and throw it in. I ignore that though and do the full process of soap and rinse then throw it into the Hobart.
neatscienceed 20 points 1y ago
I feel silly for even asking, but what I’ve never understood is if you’ve already washed/rinsed/sanitized, why is the Hobart necessary?
Squirrelylove 36 points 1y ago
It's not. It's an either or thing. You don't need to wash and sanitize the dishes twice. I've worked with a-holes who like to waste time by washing the dishes twice. It's super infuriating for me - but I'm dramatic. Some items can ONLY be hand washed though.
vulgar_witch 13 points 1y ago
You're supposed to use soap either way and rinse. The Hobart does the sanitize step of dish washing, nothing more. It doesn't CLEAN the dishes.
Squirrelylove 16 points 1y ago
If it is a combo machine it sure as sh*t does clean the dishes. I've had to change out the soap jugs enough to know what I'm talking about. I'm also familiar with the model in my stores.

Someone doesn't read the updates.
sheep_heavenly 7 points 1y ago
Its not. I prefer just the three sink, but if I don't want to fuss with sani water (shout-out to one barista that keeps yeeting used whips into the sani pit) I'll wash, rinse, Hobart.
the1noir 2 points 1y ago
For me, the Hobart like, dries it for me too lol gives it a more clean/finished feeling
goldqueen287 5 points 1y ago
Ok but I get yelled at for this. I spent 40 minutes on a full days worth of dishes during close cause cs was scarce that day. I didn’t just rinse I also scrubbed with the soap before putting it in the dishwasher because it seemed like it was only sanitizing, but apparently fully scrubbing the food off the dishes is a “deep clean” job for specific days???
vulgar_witch 4 points 1y ago
That is nonsense. You did the right thing. Dishes shouldn't NEED a "deep clean" if they are cleaned properly the first time anyway.
goldqueen287 5 points 1y ago
My whole team would subtly bully me for this with comments like “no I’m not putting you on dishes cause it’ll take too long” like what??
vulgar_witch 3 points 1y ago
That makes my blood boil. I'm not the fastest on bar but they will put me on bar because everyone should do bar. Same with dishes, register, and every other task in that store. I'd report it honestly.
cringeqween13 3 points 1y ago
This. My store feels like a train wreck like I understand this job doesn't pay enough but if everyone put in the effort things wouldn't be disgusting all the time. I understand how somethings shouldn't be done daily but when I scrub the ice coffee bin after it's emptied and the water is brown from residue thats disgusting.
goldqueen287 2 points 1y ago
Literally. Our urns for the cold brew always have so much residue that won’t come off with a rinse so I have to go in there with soap and a scrub but apparently that’s considered a DEEP clean??!?! These cleaning standards are scary. Plus I just heard that we’re only supposed to get 15 minutes to close. Is this supposed to be for a perfect number of partners in store? Cause 3 people closing a whole corporate store is NOT enough for a 15 minute close let alone the 30-60 minutes we get at my store.
vulgar_witch 2 points 1y ago
Jesus it's that bad? I legit just bleach it and do a thorough rinse every night to avoid that bullshit. It was stained so bad when I first got hired.
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Same. I also don't like using the Hobart because my glasses fog up and the metal items get too hot
goldqueen287 1 points 1y ago
Same but i have to since the sanitizing spray always gets all over me compared to the Hobart which keeps a bunch of dishes out of my way while I wash the hand wash only stuff. It’s a cycle and the steam gives me a chance to clean my glasses lmao
XMyshelX 2 points 1y ago
That’s what most stores do but standard is to wash, rinse, sanitize and air dry this is an industry standard on top of that. When you get your national certification for food safety this is a significant portion, including ph levels and temperature of sanitizer and such….
vulgar_witch 8 points 1y ago
I litterally got an update on the store from papers that we are supposed to let the Hobart do all the work. I'm shocked Starbucks chose to walk away from the industry standard. I spent so many years doing it the right way (soap rinse and sanitize) that I was shocked to see this change.

SOME locations have a machine that ONLY hot water sanitize.
I've worked at several locations in different states that have a combo machine. If you can find your machine model you'll be able to figure out what you have.
LeatherTurnip1224 32 points 1y ago
We nicknamed ours hobie, no one says Hobart in our store just hobie 😆
Politicalgeek03 7 points 1y ago
same, lmao i’m from texas and I thought that’s what everyone called them
bryceofswadia 20 points 1y ago
It’s so funny how the standard used to be “it’s not a dishwasher”, and then, without changing the machine at all, the standard magically changed to “yes it actually is a dishwasher.”
Squirrelylove 6 points 1y ago
SOME machines are dishwashers. SOME machines are just sanitizers. Figure out which one your store uses and do dishes accordingly.
proletarithot 8 points 1y ago
We’ve had the same Hobart for at least 6 years and I remember being told “this is NOT a dishwasher; you must wash before using” … but now it is magically a dishwasher. It hasn’t changed at all, and it’s always been connected to the yellow Hobart detergent. But it wasn’t until the summer training that we were allowed to even consider it a dishwasher.
Squirrelylove 3 points 1y ago
WHO told you it wasn't a dishwasher though? Was it maybe just an uninformed partner? Because I've always had dishwashers in the stores I worked and some of the partners had no clue what they were talking about when they told fellow partners that it wasn't a dishwasher.

Some people talk out of their behinds. Sbux partners are sometimes some of those people.
proletarithot 3 points 1y ago
Every store manager I’ve ever had, and our 2 most recent DMs before the summer training. I’ve been a shift for 5 years and all my fellow SSV were told the same thing.
samwise122 5 points 1y ago
The standard for dishes hasn’t changed in the nine years I’ve been with the company. It’s in the store cleanliness and equipment maintenance manual. Remove 3D debris, then put in Hobart. The only difference between types of machines are how they sanitize. Some sanitize with chlorine, others with heat. Both of them use the exact same soap and have the same wash cycle. The update didn’t change anything, they’re reminding partners how to use the equipment that’s in every store.
airernie 17 points 1y ago
The one in our store is a dishwasher, but it cycles so quickly that it won't remove any residue of consequence.

As an example, if we don't rinse out the cube that we store coffee beans in, then the cube will still have beans in the bottom of it when the cycle is complete.
Squirrelylove 30 points 1y ago
To be fair, you should always make sure there is no debris on dishes before putting them in ANY dishwasher.
airernie 6 points 1y ago
I agree, but I use to work for EcoLab and any decent dishwasher should be able to knock something as simple as coffee beans off a plastic surface.

That's one of the reasons I pre-soak or thoroughly spray before putting anything into the "dishwasher".
philosopher_cat_lady 5 points 1y ago
Yeah, this makes me think your Hobart may need to be cleaned, like that the holes in its arms are blocked with hard water deposits. I know during clean play we clean the Hobart sometimes
philosopher_cat_lady 16 points 1y ago
The Barista Basics training module says the Hobart washes, rinses, and sanitizes
Pylon-Cam 2 points 1y ago
Just because they say it doesn’t make it true.

When you put dishes through the washer and it doesn’t remove residue that could easily be removed with soap and a sponge, it’s clear it’s not doing a good job.
vulgar_witch 1 points 1y ago
Not all of em do. I always clean with soap anyway.
isolated-grace 11 points 1y ago
Hobart IS a dishwasher. So long as you remove 3D debris from the dishes prior to running.
qunelarch 3 points 1y ago
Yeah. Gotta rinse first and give it a lil scrub sometimes for the stuck on stuff. It’ll wash but it can’t *scrub*
MrsClaireUnderwood 7 points 1y ago
As others mentioned, they do call the hobart a dishwasher but this is irrelevant to the actual debate in this thread.

Even if you're using a \*dishwasher\* you STILL need to scrub off physical food stuff and SCRUB hard to get stains.

No matter what the hobart actually is, you still need to scrub stains off lol.
Shipolove 7 points 1y ago
Oooooooo
I thought ppl were calling it Hoe Bar this entire time...
Thought it was werid, and no one ever corrected me.
Exhausted_Titan 4 points 1y ago
Watched an SM get mad because after she directed me to just “throw them in” I took all of our pumps to the back, took them a part (because apparently I’m the only one who fuckin knows how to do this the right way) and actually washed and scrubbed all the little bits she claimed “just grow over time and use” like that’s fuckin disgusting first of all and second how are people like this getting paid more than me?

And this is that one SM that does “everything by company standard” and has been with the company for 10yrs but is the first to throw that standard out the window at the earliest sign of inconvenience? You know the one.
cringeqween13 2 points 1y ago
I hate how much I actually give a shit about my store. Like I WANT it to look nice and live up to standard (if not better) especially since it was the first store in the district
Exhausted_Titan 2 points 1y ago
I’m right there with you honestly. Lol I get mad when I see it looking a mess and even if I am a messy barista (Other partners just know when I’m on bar because things are a little chaotic looking lol but I try my best ;__;) that being said I clean up after myself, keep things stocked, updated and whenever I have a moment I’m checking on dishes cause fuck that. I like doing whips because I know they’ll be charged right and sweet creams get done best when I do them. Not bragging it’s just I know I put my everything in everything I do and I can see the exhaustion in my partners faces so if I can take away from their struggle I will. But also for the partners who could give a shit less I’m not about to let them do something that requires an extra minute to do the right way.

It’s both for the ones who work too hard because others choose not to and because I take pride in what I do. No matter what it is I’m doing.
cilantroprince 3 points 1y ago
i just want them to pay me to come in for like 2 hours, just to SCRUB all the whisks, pitchers, trays, everything that ends up as discolored as it does in our store

i do what i can when i’m on dish duty butchered never enough time 😩
cringeqween13 2 points 1y ago
God that would be the best noncoverage schedule. Right next to reorganizing the cabinets and boh. Basically doing stuff without customers or other partners in the way 😅
cilantroprince 2 points 1y ago
“clean play” but just sending me loose with a scrubber and getting out of my damn way 😂
He11oboyo 3 points 1y ago
Oh, the amount of disgusting steaming pitchers and whip cans I've seen...
sheep_heavenly 6 points 1y ago
Yeah, everyone who says to "rinse off debris" and that's magically enough should try taking a brush to their whip canisters.

I have never failed to scrub disgusting lumps of yellow gunk from the canisters when a store doesn't have a bottle brush or tries to say Hobart is enough.
He11oboyo 3 points 1y ago
I've found the best way is let hot soapy water sit in them, dump it out after a little, and put it in the Hobart. I always check them after I take them out though JUST to be sure but I've still found mocha crusted to the insides of "clean" containers.
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
If other partners did this the dishes wouldn't get as bad as they do.
sheep_heavenly 1 points 1y ago
Which I mean like, at that point... Could also just give it a lil scrub 😉
He11oboyo 2 points 1y ago
Yeah but I'm lazy by nature so I'm at least going to try to do the easy work first 😆 I made sure everything we clean in the end though because it always disgusted me.
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Literally the reason for the 3 separate pictures. I rinsed out the ice coffee till it was clear water then I scrubbed the inside. The water turned brown again. So glad I'm not the only one that finds this disgusting.
Beefman453 2 points 1y ago
It’s a dish sanitizer is what we call it lol
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
I would rather let things soak in sani than burn my hand and fog my glasses using the hobart
onapapersun 2 points 1y ago
My Hobart does the wash and sanitize but I still make sure I get all the debris out. Drives me insane when I see others not at least rinse out whip cannisters and mocha pump because it results in having all that nasty shit sitting in the bottom. When I see that the water in the bottom is gross and has a particular smell, I drain the water, do a quick clean and I turn it back on. I hate the idea that dishes that are used for making beverages still be dirty.

Also, not everything goes in the Hobart. Off the top of my head is caramel drizzle bottles. You never want to put bottles in there because it causes the plastic to warp and its why you get leaky bottles.
juju483 2 points 1y ago
A tech told me it actually is a dishwasher
sanriobf 1 points 1y ago
Someone didn’t scrub off the 3D debris 😔✊
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Typically when someone says 3D they're referring to something that protrudes off of, not something that lays flush. You couldn't feel the difference between the metal and the stain. But you're damn right no one scrubbed it, not before I did.
sanriobf 2 points 1y ago
Mainly just making a joke abt the wording in the training, you’re totally right!
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Gotxha. (Better to end sarcastic comments with /s so its not taken seriously)
Commercial-Ad2944 1 points 1y ago
Now karen if you put a mocha caked wisk in your dishwasher would that remove it? No.
cringeqween13 1 points 1y ago
Fun fact: I'd already blasted the whisk with hot water. You wanna show me what your stores whisks look like after you wash them? Also not sure if you like baking (I sure do) but if you but brownie or cake batter covered whisks in the dishwasher and put soap in the dishwasher and turn it on your whisks don't come out stained.
Commercial-Ad2944 1 points 1y ago
no I’m saying you can’t expect any dish washer to clean caked on food. The Hobart is a dishwasher. Also right after you make mocha soak it in water, don’t let it harden until you clean it! That’ll really help to prevent any difficulty cleaning:)
awkardNeph 1 points 1y ago
I dont understand. Why there is so much back and from but Hobart does NOT make sanitizers. Starbucks uses a high temp under counter dishwasher. If you scrub dishes off before you put it in. It will be cleaned
kayleeispunk 1 points 1y ago
As far as I’ve been informed, Hobart is meant for sanitizing things. So you wash, rinse, sanitize OR wash, rinse, throw in Hobart.
FunBooger 1 points 1y ago
Looks like 3-d debris.
CalDoesMaths 1 points 1y ago
There are different model Hobart machines! Some stores are essentially just sanitizer baths but some do cleaning too!
