Unable to transfer due to 30 day performance review? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dj_deja_reve
So I talked to my manager at the end of June about transferring stores. The location I want is smaller, slower, and in a more convenient area. There are too many regulars at our store that have been rude, cussed at me, and thrown tantrums. I have less than 2 years until my degree is complete, and I really, really just want a fresh start to focus on school.

SM has been avoidant and difficult to communicate with over the past month and a half, and -finally- today I was told that my transfer was denied because I am being put on a 30 day performance review. I have no write ups or corrective action on my record, no customer complaints, and no issues with tasks not completed/money discrepancies. They mentioned things that can't necessarily be objectively measured, such as problem-solving(calling SM/DM too much when there have been no call/no shows and when our AC was broken were cited as examples) and partners not in position every moment, specifially, during surprise DM visits.

The other supervisor who is trying to transfer is being given misinformation(being told she needs to apply to every store as if she were a new partner?) and is also being evaded to the point where she is giving up hope.

I worry that this is another way of putting off my transfer because we are short-staffed, and that with these opinion-based requirements my SM can potentially put it off as long as she wants. I have little confidence that I will be allowed to transfer when the 30 days are up.

Any feedback, suggestions, or even commiserations are welcome. I -have- considered applying as if I were new and "quitting" my store or stepping down as shift temporarily just to transfer.

Is the new store under the same DM? Have you talked to the SM of your intended new store, maybe they have some advice, likewise the new DM. I hope others have some advice. I can just share that there are some wonderful SMs out here. I have one. Your SM sounds awful, I'm sorry

Unfortunately, it's the same DM. I talked to the other SM 2 days ago and found out that she has been in the dark about the whole process...p

I've had good SM's, too. This is the third one in 4 years at this store, and it's just more frustrating than it has ever been.

All I can say here is do NOT quit on the spot because there’s a period where you won’t be rehired for a “bad” quit. Even if it’s a 2 weeks notice there’s probably a wait. I agree with the other comment to talk to the sm of the new store who hopefully will be able to help you through this.

Really sounds like your SM doesn't want you to transfer. Unfortunately you have basically no rights in this situation, and management can deny your transfer for any reason or no reason at all. The 30-day performance review thing is pure BS. If they're doing that they need to inform you about it. I would start by contacting the SM at the store you want to go to and make sure there's a spot for you there, and get their support. Make it clear to your current SM that this is about positives for you, and not a reflection on anything negative about their store. Your current SM has to sign off on the transfer so you need to convince them to go along with it.
