Barista Trainer Interview (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by starryeyes6
Hi! I have an interview on Monday for a Barista Trainer position, and I just wanted to know if anyone had any advice or experience with this? I’m pretty confident, I’ve been with the buck almost a year, but what do they usually ask/quiz you on? Thanks in advance!

emphasize your adherence/commitment to making sure people are following routines/standards/etc. study up on the missions & values. ensure you’re able to explain the “why” to the work, and not just the “how”. brushing up on servsafe/eco lab/local health code would also demonstrate your willingness to work harder to achieve better results.

i was a trainer briefly before being bumped to SSV and the one thing i notice is that most people tend to “fail” skill checks for promotions/additional responsibilities bc they’re too focused on the procedure, and not the reason behind it. starbucks loves a barista who knows their tasks and can do them under the worst conditions possible, but they also spend a lot of time being hung up on *how* partners respond to challenging situations, not just what their solution is.

another big thing to do for any interview (starbucks or otherwise) is to know your own worth. you should be confident and assertive of why you feel you would be a good fit, without coming off as arrogant or controlling. the prime directive at the end of the day is to drive sales in some form. so if you show them you’re capable of turning out capable, knowledgeable baristas in a timely manner, you’ll have a lot more opportunities within this company as time goes on.

i always told my trainees (and now all baristas tbh) that regardless of whether you intend to be with the siren for a few months, a few years, or for life, you should still apply yourself and bring your best to work every day. i used to come into my shifts expecting the worst, and that really influenced my own performance and mood more than i realized. now, as a shift, i try to redirect that into whatever form of silver lining/suffering in solidarity/whatever to try and help my baristas cope with the stresses and frustrations that this job endlessly brings us.

that being said, do ***not*** compromise on your own values and morals just to appease your ASM/SM, and ensure you are fully informed on the gritty details of just what words like “policy”, “standards”, etc *actually* mean in this company, versus what they may mean elsewhere. we’re still a globally successful corporate chain, regardless of the origin story, and should be viewed exactly as such. don’t lose sleep over this job, and never let it take priority over your own ethics and sensibilities. the two types of people who make it in this company are either ruthless ladder climbers, or the ones who persevere long enough to make a positive impact for the partners with their presence and advocacy.

try to be the latter of those two, but don’t ever put this job before your own well-being. take care of yourself and each other however you can, bc we all too clearly know that the only support baristas get is from each other. behind every role and routine is a human being, and far too often that fact tends to be forgotten in the heat of the moment.

good luck, hope my rambling helps somehow!

We didn’t do interviews but they may talk about coffee tastings since that’s something we don’t normally do a lot at work.
