Ok to start this out I am not an anti-vax by any means. In fact I really wish I could get it, but I have gullian-barre syndrome so my doc strongly advised me to avoid it. However, in the latest weekly update it said something about how other corporations are mandating the vax and how this should be “on top of our mind” which makes it sound like they’re also going to be implementing mandates. I’m very concerned I’m going to lose my job over this and I don’t know what to do. Also, I’ve definitely noticed a change in the way people are treating me at work. All my fellow partners have had it and apparently they talk to the manager about how they don’t feel safe working with me. This could be a coincidence, but I’ve also been getting a lot less hours than usual. I only told one person I haven’t had it but somehow everyone is aware now and I feel a lot of tension being directed towards me from people I thought were my friends. I don’t really know the point of this post, basically I’m just venting and seeing if anyone is in the same boat. If I could get it I would but I don’t want to put my health at risk when I already have this neurological disease. I really need this job, but I feel like everyone thinks of me poorly now and I’m so scared that I’ll be let go. I don’t know what to do, and I didn’t think times would get like this but here we are :(

Legitimate medical exemptions are always possible unless it causes an undue burden on the company. If hospitals can accommodate staff that cannot vaccinate, a Starbucks can. Part of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
That being said, I'd make sure your doctor is actually advising you appropriately. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an extremely rare side effect of traditional vaccines, but it's not listed as a potential condition that will cause additional complications. When I looked it up briefly, there's several groups advocating for those with GBS all claiming there's no data saying that it's unsafe to vaccinate.
As far as your coworkers go, that's difficult to say. If you haven't yet, you might find success in explaining that you want it but you have a condition. Don't have to be specific about it. There's a difference between "I'm not vaccinated but I am the literal party that is supposed to be protected by herd immunity" and "I'm not vaccinated because (insert stupid reason here about muh freedumbs or conspiracy theories)"
Its not ideal, but neither is the idea of working with an antivaxxer. Settling those worries might soothe the tension.

I have also had serious reactions to past vaccines like for the flu which is why my docs advised against it. I don’t think you are awful. It is no ones business what you do with your body

Do you qualify for a medical exemption?
sylvie4828 points1y ago
I’m pretty sure they legally can’t fire you. Do your coworkers know why you can’t get it?
BeardiesRule1127 points1y ago
They don’t need to know. That’s personal wtf.
sylvie4824 points1y ago
I didn’t say that op should. I was just wondering if they had.
brokebean222 [OP]3 points1y ago
They do know yes

Their behavior is absolutely unacceptable. I would understand a little bit if they thought you were an anti-vaxxer and thus felt unsafe near you, but this is ridiculous.

I hope they don’t mandate it. I have had all vaccinations other than this one because. Hello? It’s still an experimental drug not yet approved by the FDA. Also, because we don’t know long term side effects I’m worried blindness could be one of them like with one of the other vaccines (I forgot which one) and I’m already blind in one eye I can’t risk something like that. So I’m not getting the vaccine anytime in the near future and probably not for a few years. So they better not make it mandatory. Some of my coworkers think I am stupid for not getting the vaccine but others agree with me. So thankfully I haven’t had the experience you have had.

I’m right there with you, you’re not alone. It’s a tough opinion to have these days unfortunately. :(
brokebean222 [OP]2 points1y ago
I have a strong feeling they will, especially when it gets fda approved :( scary times

If you have a legitimate medical exemption and can provide documentation you’re fine.

Where is the science behind vaccine reactions with your condition? Get a second opinion and get vaccinated. I would be speaking with a neurologist and not a pcp if it’s a neurological condition you’re concerned about.
It’s one thing if you cannot get vaccinated, it’s a whole different thing if you’re just deterred and choose not to pursue.

I have a neurologist as well as a primary care doctor. Both say I should not get it based on how I’ve had pretty serious reactions to past vaccines like the flu shot. The thing is they don’t have a lot of science on this vaccine yet which scares me because if I already don’t do well with the flu shot who knows what this one would do
nightkat890 points1y ago
They have plenty of science on this vaccine currently. A lot of people fail to realize to get emergency authorization there’s MANY steps that have to be taken and trials performed.
What the vaccine currently lacks is long term studies sadly
