Had a lady come up to the front counter and she seemed a little off but I couldn’t tell what exactly. I was suggesting to her some drinks and in the midst of our conversation she low key let me know she didn’t have much money due to her leaving an abusive relationship just right before she walked into my store! I ended up taking care of her and gave her a venti caramel macchiato (which she loved) and I could see she was getting even more scatter brained and emotional. She kept apologizing for being a hassle and for being emotional and wanting to cry and I kept reassuring her that no one here especially me would judge her for showing basic human emotion. I told her to just sit and take a breather and that my coworkers and I would be here if she needed anything.

Well outside of Starbucks I am the president of my schools Psychology Club so I have talked to some wonderful professors who have helped me with my psychology major and have made it known that they have lots of services for things like that. Well I gave her the numbers and websites and explained the services and told her where the psychical buildings were. She ended up crying a lot and still continued to apologize and I just kept reassuring her that there is no shame in what she’s feeling and to express it and I even offered to talk with her if she needed to and I could just ask my shift lead to allow me a few minutes. She said it was fine and was grateful for my words and taking the time to listen to her and try to help.

Man I didn’t expect to be in that position but this really gave me a small glimpse of what I will be working with when I become a therapist. I hope I see her again and she’s ok
